Chat Transcript

Plenty of injury issues and hot free agent acquisitions to discuss entering Week 9.

Senior Fantasy Writer Dave Richard will stop by this afternoon at 3 p.m. ET to answer your pressing Fantasy questions.

Feel free to submit a question in advance or stop by at 3 p.m.!

11/06 Chat with Dave Richard
(11/06 15:00 PM) Good afternoon, everybody! It's Week 9, we're about five weeks from the start of the Fantasy postseason and things couldn't be bigger in the Fantasy Football world! Lots of news to talk about today, lots of your questions than need to be answered, plus one of my own! I have a roster decision and want your help -- more on that here: http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/mcc/groups/post/9012343/18132044 But for now, let's help you win in Week 9!
(11/06 15:00 PM) Darryl, Bronx N.Y - what u think about j.jones this week against det
(11/06 15:02 PM) Darryl, we like Jones a lot this week, and if you're an owner who's been living with him on your bench for most of the year, roll him out there against the Lions in Week 9. Detroit has given up an average of over 100 rush yards per game in their last three with two touchdowns and should have their hands full with the Seahawks even though the Seahawks' run offense isn't all that great. I'd start him as at least a No. 2 RB this week.
(11/06 15:02 PM) Aaron G, New York - Hi Dave- HUGE podcast fan. I have a TE question- In my ppr league, I have both Shockey and Witten. I'd like to trade one of them- who has the better value for the rest of the season?
(11/06 15:03 PM) Aaron, thanks for coming out! We try hard to deliver some of our best inside info and thoughts on the podcast (which you can subscribe to on the front of our site). I think Shockey is clearly better for the rest of the way. As I said in the podcast this week, look for Witten to have a monster outing against the Eagles, THEN trade him. Shockey should be your guy for the season, though.
(11/06 15:03 PM) Jeff, Milwaukee, Wi - Would you dump Garrard for Alex Smith? I'm looking for backup depth behind Cutler.
(11/06 15:04 PM) Good to hear from you again, Jeff. I'm still not a believer in Alex Smith. He's played fairly well in his last six quarters but I wouldn't turn to him in place of Garrard, who has a solid matchup this week. I'd stick with Garrard.
(11/06 15:04 PM) Missing Daniels Already, Houston - Hi Dave, LOVE the podcast. Fred Davis vs ATL or Heath Miller vs Denver?
(11/06 15:05 PM) Great name! I'd go with Fred Davis this week against the Falcons. Atlanta has not played well vs. tight ends and Davis is a good-hands man that I've followed since his days a USC. Heath Miller has a bad matchup against the Broncos, who have done a pretty good job against tight ends thanks to Brian Dawkins.
(11/06 15:05 PM) Joe, wilmington NC - Whats happening with megatron this weekend and should i start, also my Qb's are hasselback and alex smith who do i start?
(11/06 15:06 PM) Joe, here's the latest news on Calvin Johnson: He practiced again on Friday and is expected to play. Sounds great, right? I'm still a little skeptical of how he'll do but you can't deny starting him as a No. 2 Fantasy WR this week. I'd also start Hasselbeck this week -- I like his matchup against the Seahawks a lot.
(11/06 15:06 PM) Marc Anthony, Miami, FL - Ola, Dave!!! J-Lo & I are so happy w/ the purchase of our team. We're on our way to Foxboro to watch the Wildcat from our luxury suite & wanted to know if you would start R. Williams or Maroney as a RB2 in PPR!!! Gracias!!!
(11/06 15:08 PM) LOL! Hello Mr. Anthony. Your wife is gorgeous. But enough about pretty things, let's get to ugly running backs. Tough call between these two but I'd stick with Maroney over Williams. I guess I'm not buying Williams this week as the Pats snuffed out the Wildcat in their second meeting with the Dolphins last season and Williams probably won't see as many touches.
(11/06 15:08 PM) Marc, Upstate New York - With c. johnsons and k. smith both in is seattle def. still a good play?
(11/06 15:10 PM) Yes, Marc. Kevin Smith is also expected to play for the Lions along with Megatron, but the Seahawks DST is still a solid Fantasy option this week. Did you know they were ranked 10th vs. the run? I was surprised to see that, and I'm not going to be surprised to see them partially corral Johnson. Remember, the Seahawks go up against the Cardinals' receivers every year and ... well they get burned. But Johnson is banged up and his QB hasn't done a great job of hitting him routinely. I'd stick with their DST this week and am in several of my leagues.
(11/06 15:10 PM) OVBALL, Ocean View,Virginia - I have been offered A.Peterson(his) for A.Bradshaw+M.Bell+Colts DST(mine)? I have Gore-K.Smith and R.Rice and 49er's and NYG Dst...is this a good trade for me or him?
(11/06 15:11 PM) Yeah I don't see how you can't make this trade. You're giving a running back with a bad foot, a running back beginning to fall out of favor in New Orleans and an awful DST that lost THREE players to injuries today (ask me about it and I'll tell you) for one of the best backs in football. One question: Can I join your league? TAKE THE DEAL.
(11/06 15:11 PM) Mike, Wichita,Ks - If C.J. plays should I put him in over Driver or Marshall? Or should we take a wait and see approach with him?
(11/06 15:12 PM) I'd consider him over Marshall, Mike. I did not like what the Broncos did last week, and when the Ravens exposed the Broncos offense, the Steelers were surely paying attention. The only thing is that Johnson is not 100 percent while Marshall probably is closer to 100 percent.
(11/06 15:12 PM) John, Jersey City, NJ - With AP on a bye for me this week.. which two rbs should I start among Kevin Smith, Maroney, and Jamaal Charles? Thanks!
(11/06 15:13 PM) Jersey John, I'd start Maroney and Smith, but I don't want to write off Charles just yet. I'm expecting him to split reps, but he'll play more than other KC backs because I see the Chiefs throwing the ball a lot on Sunday against the Jaguars. I like him as a No. 3 Fantasy RB, especially in PPR leagues.
(11/06 15:14 PM) Jeff, Buffalo NY - I know youve been getting Steve Slaton questions all week but I need to know if I should start him over M. Barber this week???
(11/06 15:15 PM) I'd definitely start Barber ahead of Slaton, but that's not to say Slaton won't see much playing time. My HUNCH is that Slaton will still see more work than Ryan Moats as Slaton is the better pass blocker and receiver, and Houston will do a lot of throwing. Now, that also means that Slaton won't see a ton of carries -- he might see like five. I like Slaton as a No. 3 option at best this week since he might not top 12 total touches.
(11/06 15:15 PM) Jim Wegs, Chicago, iL - Dave, I see you, Jamey, and the Guru all downgraded Cutler from the initial rankings. Do you know something I don't?
(11/06 15:16 PM) Jim, we're seeing a better Cardinals secondary and a Bears offense that bumbled in the red zone and won't have Devin Hester at 100 percent speed. I get the feeling that the Cardinals will beat the Bears behind a strong effort by Kurt Warner, who should be able to exploit the Bears' blitz since they don't have a one-man wrecking crew like Julius Peppers. Cutler might be all yards and interceptions.
(11/06 15:16 PM) Mike, Philly! - Houshamanzadeh! is it time to trade him. If I should trade him for whom???
(11/06 15:17 PM) Love the Philly fans, sorry about the World Series. I would consider trades for Houshmandzadeh after he lights up the Lions this week. Problem is that you would need to find a WR-needy team that would take him on and offer a RB, QB or TE in return. Might not get a whole lot. It's always worth a shot.
(11/06 15:18 PM) In order to answer as many questions as possible, please keep your questions short and sweet, and I'll do the same with my answers. I'll attempt to address every significant Fantasy player throughout the chat. If you have a Fantasy 'start or sit' question, just check out my rankings at: http://bit.ly/vZNx5 and you will find your answer fast!
(11/06 15:18 PM) mike, pa - ryan or hasselback
(11/06 15:19 PM) Mike, Matt Ryan is our Sit of the Week as he's been struggling and will go up against a strong Redskins secondary with his best receiver, Roddy White, hobbling with a mysterious knee injury. Hasselbeck plays the Lions at home and his O-line is getting healthy. Nuff said.
(11/06 15:19 PM) Chris, Bowmanville, ON - To answer your Start Em question, I'd go with Morris and Britt personally. My question is which side of this trade do you want? Clark and Bradshaw for Davis and Moreno?
(11/06 15:20 PM) Interesting choice for my lineup, thanks Chris. I'd rather have Davis and Moreno because the dropoff from Clark to Davis isn't much and I think Bradshaw's foot will eventually sideline him.
(11/06 15:20 PM) Chris, Atlanta, GA - You have Maroney and Mike Wallace ranked #16 at their respecive position. Does Wallace get the nod in a PPR league?
(11/06 15:21 PM) Wallace tends to not see a lot of receptions, so not necessarily. I really like Mike Wallace this week to put up a nice game on the Broncos because Denver will have a hard time covering all of the Steelers weapons. I see him streaking for a long catch or two. Maroney is obviously safer because he'll touch the ball more -- if Wallace gets two catches for 50 yards and Maroney gets 80 yards with no catches, then Maroney wins. I'd go with the running back here.
(11/06 15:21 PM) Yankee Fan, Main Street, U.S.A. - Will A. Johnson explode like he did last year or have we already seen his best ....especially with Daniels down
(11/06 15:23 PM) I did some research on how Matt Schaub does when Owen Daniels doesn't put up many stats, and the results were big: Andre Johnson stepped up in every single game! Now that Daniels is out and his replacement won't likely be productive, I expect Johnson to keep the stats coming. You can read that story right here: http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/story/12472537/history-lessons-the-schaub-must-go-on
(11/06 15:23 PM) SVTRIDER, San Diego - I have Tom Brady as my starting QB, and Flacco as my backup. I was offered Steve Smith (Car) for Flacco. Should I take it?
(11/06 15:23 PM) Only if you're WR-needy. I'd expect more in trade for Flacco than Smitty, and even though the WR is going up against a defense he's regularly whipped, I still don't love him this week. Make the deal only if you need a WR for your starting lineup.
(11/06 15:23 PM) KC, Troy - Should I pick up LJ on waivers ?
(11/06 15:25 PM) Hey KC, I think he's worth a flier. I've picked him up in a couple of leagues. Some people believe he won't play for the Chiefs again, but Kansas City will probably try and put this incident behind them, use LJ the rest of the year and then kick him out. A lot will depend on how their running backs do this week -- if they struggle they'll turn back to LJ. I'd pick him up and then decide what to do next week.
(11/06 15:25 PM) Garrett, Chicago - will we ever see NFC/AFC only leagues like baseball AL/NL only leagues?
(11/06 15:25 PM) Highly unlikely because the conferences are exactly alike rules-wise compared to baseball.
(11/06 15:25 PM) Katie, San Jose - Schuab or Flacco? I am stuck!
(11/06 15:26 PM) Katie, the Colts lost their starting cornerback for a month, nickelback for the season and strong safety for the season -- ALL TODAY. Their replacements are good but not great. I'd trust Schaub this week against the Colts even without Owen Daniels. Andre Johnson has no excuses not to get 100 yards.
(11/06 15:26 PM) Crocodile Dundee, Australia - PLEASE HELP! Do I trade LT, Bowe and Winslow to get Megatron, D Brown and Davis? Non PPR league and I also have CJ, Benson and Lynch at RB and Marshall, Collie, MSW at WR and Olsen at TE. We start 2WR, 1RB, 1TE and a flex. THANKYOU!
(11/06 15:27 PM) Big trade, Croc, but I like the trade for you as you'll spread out your WR and TE talent, which you can afford to do with CJ and Benson as your best RBs. Plus you've got someone to overpay for LT, which is excellent since he's going to struggle this and every week against tough run defenses until his line gets healthy.
(11/06 15:27 PM) Steve, Rhode Island - hi Dave, I'm in a 14 team keeper league, thoughts on trading Tim Hightower for Miles Austin?
(11/06 15:28 PM) Love this trade for you Steve, especially if you have good running backs already on your roster. That's the one benefit to carrying so many running backs -- when one hits, you can trade them for whatever you need, like a Top 10 WR!
(11/06 15:28 PM) Tomy, NYC - Mike Sims Walker or Devin Hester this week?
(11/06 15:29 PM) Tomy, Hester will play on a sprained ankle while Sims-Walker is healthy against a bad Chiefs secondary. I'd trust MSW in spite of last week's awful play.
(11/06 15:29 PM) Cal Jewell, Folsom, Louisiana - J. Charles or S. Slaton
(11/06 15:30 PM) I'd trust Slaton, but it's by a nose. If there was word about how much work Charles would get then I might change my mind, but I think both RBs will split.
(11/06 15:30 PM) In order to answer as many questions as possible, please keep your questions short and sweet, and I'll do the same with my answers. I'll attempt to address every significant Fantasy player throughout the chat. If you have a Fantasy 'start or sit' question, just check out my rankings at: http://bit.ly/vZNx5 and you will find your answer fast!
(11/06 15:30 PM) Christopher, Dallas, TV - Hi Dave! Going forward question: I traded Ronnie Brown to get back Reggie Wayne this week. My other RBs are R. Rice, C. Benson and R. Mendenhall. Wayne sure helps my WR situation, but am I going to regret parting with Brown? We play 2 RB and one RB/WR flex each week. Thanks!
(11/06 15:31 PM) Chris, you took part of your depth and traded it for need. This is a perfect example of a good trade for an owner. You won't regret it one bit.
(11/06 15:31 PM) Shannon Tyler, Phoenix, AZ - Roethlisberger or Rivers this weekend?
(11/06 15:32 PM) Roethlisberger is another QB Jamey Eisenberg and I disagree on. I think he'll have a good game against the Broncos because the Steelers will order him to throw it more than run it. Did you know the Broncos' run defense is ranked higher than their pass defense?! Again, another statistical surprise. But too many weapons for the Steelers will add up for Roethlisberger. All that said, I still like RIVERS better because the Chargers will throw a ton too.
(11/06 15:32 PM) mhuynh12, orange county - hey dave. follow you on twitter. great advice bfore...ineed help picking 3 WR. welker, crabtree, burleson, santana moss, collie, maclin. thanks.
(11/06 15:34 PM) I love the Twitter folk -- you can follow me on Twitter @daverichard, by the way. MH, I would go with Welker, Burleson and Collie if I were you. But we do like Crabtree this week against the Titans since Tennessee will probably dedicate two defenders to Vernon Davis on passing downs.
(11/06 15:34 PM) CJ, Texas - Dave, when do you think it is fair to veto a trade in a league? What justifies blocking a deal? If a strong team gets dangerously stronger (AP and MJD on the same team, for instance) is that reason enough? Thanks.
(11/06 15:35 PM) CJ, I refuse to play in leagues that mandate voting on trades or a Commish who can veto a trade. The only time I think a trade should be vetoed is if there's collusion (I trade Larry Fitzgerald to my brother for Neil Rackers). Otherwise, let the owners who negotiate trades for big players have them.
(11/06 15:35 PM) Dave, Miami - Do you and Jamey keep tabs on who is doing better this year with your picks? If so, who is in the lead?
(11/06 15:36 PM) We do keep track with our Faceoffs. I have a "one week" lead on him through the season, but he's been dead-on over a lot of players, including Miles Austin. We both have our strengths and weaknesses, and it only benefits you guys because you can read us both.
(11/06 15:37 PM) I'm loving the off-topic questions today, guys. Keep it up. Also, in order to answer as many questions as possible, please keep your questions short and sweet, and I'll do the same with my answers. I'll attempt to address every significant Fantasy player throughout the chat. If you have a Fantasy 'start or sit' question, just check out my rankings at: http://bit.ly/vZNx5 and you will find your answer fast!
(11/06 15:38 PM) Also, I just got in the official injury report from Atlanta -- Roddy White (knee) is Questionable for Sunday after being limited in practice today, but coach Mike Smith said today that he expects him to play. I'd have a backup plan in place if you have White.
(11/06 15:38 PM) Dawgy, New York city - Trade bouldin for driver? PPR league
(11/06 15:38 PM) I would, because who knows if/when Boldin will get healthy. Driver has been cleared for Sunday at Tampa Bay, by the way.
(11/06 15:38 PM) B2Shaw, Austin TX - Benson, Tomlinson, Gore. Which 2?
(11/06 15:39 PM) I'd actually sit LT here and go with Benson vs. BAL (he lit them up earlier this year and should do fairly well this week) and Gore vs. TEN. LT will play at the Giants with a bad offensive line, and the Giants' run defense is getting healthy with LB Michael Boley and DT Chris Canty back in action. I could see Tomlinson struggling.
(11/06 15:40 PM) dave, ny, ny - hey dave, i lost daniels last week, but am loaded at WR and fighting for a playoff spot. the team that has dallas clark is at 1-7. is trading with a team that is certainly out of it for a stud frowned upon?
(11/06 15:40 PM) Nope, not at all. Hey, the 1-7 guy is still in the league, right? Still setting lineups and trying? As Herm Edwards famously said, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! He should try to win games and improve his lineup. Just don't offer him trash for a great player.
(11/06 15:41 PM) Simon, Austin, Texas - I have C Johnson, Benson, Slaton and Smith at running back. Never started smith this season. Have tried to trade him and no one is interested. Based on the remaining games, I see Hightower is available on the WW - should I dump smith for Hightower as a better back up option? Gracias!!!
(11/06 15:41 PM) Sounds like you're in a small league if Hightower is out there. Sure, I'd make that move.
(11/06 15:41 PM) Gio, Detroit, MI - I traded away Heath Miller and Braylon Edwards and in return got S. Smith (CAR). I had Owen Daniels and we see how that went but picked up Fred Davis who I think is going to do well. I still feel that Steve Smith will get his yards and touchdowns because he is that talented. Am I having wishful thinking here?
(11/06 15:43 PM) Not at all, though I do think you gave up too much for Smith. Look, the guy is still talented and has good speed, but his quarterback is playing poorly and the Panthers are clearly a running team. These factors hurt his Fantasy value. I'd consider him a No. 2 WR at best.
(11/06 15:43 PM) OK gang ... time for the 'lightning round' where I'll answer only SHORT questions with my SHORT answers so that we can get to as many questions as possible. Ask anything! Let's go!
(11/06 15:43 PM) Dirtybird 24, Mass - Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson??
(11/06 15:43 PM) Moss -- he's healthier and has an amazing matchup.
(11/06 15:43 PM) C Cosentino, Tucson, Az - Start Witten or Davis @ TE
(11/06 15:44 PM) Davis has been too hot to sit but I like both guys this week.
(11/06 15:44 PM) jp, nc - Warner or palmer
(11/06 15:44 PM) I'd go with Warner.
(11/06 15:44 PM) Mardis, Chicago - Should I start Philly Def or San DiegoDef?
(11/06 15:44 PM) Philly's DST is a bit safer.
(11/06 15:44 PM) Big Tex, Dallas, Texas - Marshall or Crabtree?
(11/06 15:44 PM) Feeling lucky? I actually like Crabtree better. But I'd study the matchups first.
(11/06 15:44 PM) ben, lumberton nc - portisor j.charles
(11/06 15:45 PM) I'd start Portis but I don't love him this week.
(11/06 15:45 PM) MB, TX - P. Thomas or Forte?
(11/06 15:45 PM) I'm not expecting a big game from either one but Thomas is who I'd start.
(11/06 15:45 PM) Dave Gus, Olympia, WA - Wallace or Burleson?
(11/06 15:45 PM) I really like Burleson this week and I have a good track record of predicting success with him.
(11/06 15:45 PM) Carlton, Atlanta - Could you rank these guys for this week...S Moss, Burleson, Mason, Charles.
(11/06 15:46 PM) Burleson, Mason, Moss, Charles
(11/06 15:46 PM) Rick, Gastonia, NC - Slaton or Stewart?
(11/06 15:46 PM) I'd go with Stewart against the slightly weakened Saints D
(11/06 15:46 PM) Sammync22, Chicago, IL - K MORENO or FELIX JONES
(11/06 15:46 PM) I'm cringing. What an awful decision, Sammy. Moreno will see more touches, so I'd pick him.
(11/06 15:47 PM) gary, Los Angeles - PPR league 2 WE and 2 RB one Flex. Steve Smith (NYG) or Julis Jones
(11/06 15:47 PM) Jones over Smith, who is fading fast.
(11/06 15:47 PM) Dan, Baton Rouge - Colts, Cowboys or Cardinals?
(11/06 15:47 PM) For DSTs? Cowboys.
(11/06 15:47 PM) Frank, middle island NY - Eisenberg or Richard?
(11/06 15:47 PM) 100 percent sure: Eisenberg.
(11/06 15:47 PM) Chris, Trenton, NJ - Maclin or Donnie Brown for the flex (PPR)?
(11/06 15:47 PM) Maclin
(11/06 15:48 PM) Louis, Austin, Tx - Schaub or Palmer?
(11/06 15:48 PM) Schaub
(11/06 15:48 PM) Fruit of the Loom gang, land down under - boxers, briefs or commando?
(11/06 15:48 PM) No one cares.
(11/06 15:48 PM) Todd, Appleton WI - Carney or Mare?
(11/06 15:48 PM) I'd go with Carney because he's with the Saints, but if anyone reading this is desperate for a kicker, Mare is a GREAT choice off waivers.
(11/06 15:49 PM) DAVE, st.paul, minnesota - S. Holmes good FLEX option this week?
(11/06 15:49 PM) Depends on who else you have, but he might get a face full of Champ Bailey. That's never good.
(11/06 15:49 PM) drewmo, France - Addai or Portis?
(11/06 15:49 PM) Addai
(11/06 15:49 PM) nate, kearney ne - is jerome harrison goin 2 start goin forward
(11/06 15:49 PM) At some point he will but he's useless this week on a bye.
(11/06 15:49 PM) Turner, Austin, Tx - Calvin Johnson or Slaton (flex) ppr
(11/06 15:49 PM) Calvin
(11/06 15:49 PM) Jerome, San Jose - Austin Collie or Steve Smith (Carolina)
(11/06 15:50 PM) I'm a big fan of Collie but I'd say Smitty is safer.
(11/06 15:50 PM) mark, ontario, canada - roethlisberger or romo?
(11/06 15:50 PM) I really like Romo to keep it going this week.
(11/06 15:50 PM) Franke, NYC - Juston Forsett or Tashard CHoice as waiver wirepick up for rest of yr
(11/06 15:50 PM) Forsett because he's second on the depth chart. Choice is third.
(11/06 15:50 PM) Brock, Hell, MI - Julius Jones or LT?
(11/06 15:51 PM) From Detroit, eh? I'd roll the dice on Jones.
(11/06 15:51 PM) KD, Los Angeles - What do you think of Gore this weekend?
(11/06 15:51 PM) Don't love him, but he'll touch the ball enough to put up good yardage and a chance to score.
(11/06 15:51 PM) Frank, NYC - Batman or Superman?
(11/06 15:51 PM) Batman. My son likes him more than Superman.
(11/06 15:51 PM) Matt, Lewes, Delaware - Matty Ice, Big Ben, or Alex Smith?
(11/06 15:51 PM) Definitely Roethlisberger.
(11/06 15:51 PM) Frankilin, Cincy, OH - Approve or Veto - McNabb for Stafford?
(11/06 15:52 PM) See above ... I don't do vetoes. But that trade stinks in a standard seasonal league.
(11/06 15:52 PM) marc, chittenango, N.Y. - Flip the coin for me,reggie bush or buckhalter?
(11/06 15:52 PM) Yuck. Bush -- because he's not running into the Steel Curtain
(11/06 15:52 PM) JP, NC - Calvin or 85
(11/06 15:52 PM) Child, please.
(11/06 15:52 PM) Jim, Boston, MA - G Jennings or MSW - PPR?
(11/06 15:52 PM) MSW
(11/06 15:52 PM) Twitter Tony, Jax, FL - Any off the waiver wire I should grab now for weeks 15 & 16?
(11/06 15:53 PM) No idea who will be starting by then, so no. Ask in Week 14. ;)
(11/06 15:53 PM) DUANE, TEXAS - Keep Moats, Hicks or Wells, or trade?
(11/06 15:53 PM) Moats' value is very high right now so I'd try to move him to a nervous Slaton owner. If I had to keep one for 2010, it would be Wells.
