Chat Transcript

The NBA's trade deadline has been such a whirlwind that our Sergio Gonzalez will answer your Fantasy Hoops questions for the second time this week.

Sergio will stop by on Friday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. ET.

Feel free to submit a question now or stop by on Friday.

02/19 Chat with Sergio Gonzalez
(02/19 12:02 PM) Hey everybody.
(02/19 12:02 PM) Thanks for joining us for this trade deadline edition of our Fantasy hoops chat. I'm sure there are a lot of questions, so let's get to it.
(02/19 12:03 PM) Lucas C, NY - With Tyrus now a Bobcat, does this mean a big appeal for Taj now?
(02/19 12:04 PM) Yes. I think so. In the short term especially, the injury to Noah along with an opening in playing time now with Ty Thomas out is going to give Gibson a big chance to contribute. We saw the other night he can be a double-double threat. We've actually seen that several times this season when he's gotten a chance. He's one of my sleeper winners of the deadline for Fantasy. I think he could average around 10-13 points and 6-7 rebounds the rest of the way.
(02/19 12:04 PM) QQ, Irvine, CA - With the Knicks/Rockets/Kings trade, what is the value for Donte Greene, Luis Scola, and Jared Jeffrey? I own all 3 players and have been trying to find a better replacements for them. Now I'm not sure about whether this trade would increase their upsides.
(02/19 12:07 PM) Let's take them one at a time. Donte Greene will be one of several players who gets a chance to step up in Sacto, filling the Kevin Martin void. That's about 15-20 shots in the offense that will be distributed among players like Greene, but also Omri Casspi, Francisco Garcia and even Beno Udrih. So, yes, he gets a boost, but I think the young swingman may still be very inconsistent. As for Luis Scola, I think the departure of Carl Landry will mean the Rockets may need to lean on him even more than they have already this season, which is good news as long as it doesn't overwhelm him. I think he can handle it, though. Jeffries won't be great, but he'll get a chance with the Rockets not heavy up front, to play minutes and contribute something along the lines of what he was contributing in NY, which made him a viable stopgap center option in larger leagues.
(02/19 12:07 PM) JJ, San Diego - Hey Sergio - I got lucky with T. Thomas to Char. But I also have Diaw. Who do you think has more value going forward? Finally, can Landry actually beat his current #'s....and maybe push 32 mins? TKS!
(02/19 12:09 PM) Hey JJ. Jamey Eisenberg actually discussed this at length in our podcast this morning, so you may want to check that out. I am concerned for Diaw's value, I think just when he was getting comfortable in the rotation with his role alongside G-Wall and Stephen Jackson, this will be a setback for him in terms of his consistency and we could see his first-half unsteadiness return. Jamey is not quite as concerned. We both agree that Ty Thomas will get his minutes, but that he'll continue to be just as irritating and up-and-down as always. The potential here is that a change-of-scenery lets him live up to his lottery pick potential.
(02/19 12:10 PM) Peter, Green Bay, WI - Hi there again Sergio! What is your take on Blatche for the rest of the year? As much as I like Marc Gasol's game in Memphis, he does not get enough offense (~ 8 shots per game) as of late as long as Randolph and Gay keep chucking 20 shots a night. Would you drop Gasol for Blatche's potential? Thanks!
(02/19 12:12 PM) Hey Peter. Hope you are staying warm up there. I do agree with you that Gasol's offensive numbers leave something to be desired, but that's because he is on a Memphis team that is actually pretty stacked with scorers. Even with his limited offensive touches, he's consistently around 13-15 points per game with 8 rebounds and has established himself as a steady Fantasy option. I think its too risky to get rid of that for the hope that Andray Blatche can continue to have 33 points and 13 rebounds. That's not going to happen. Personally, I'd stick with the known over the unknown. With that said, I LOVE Blatche as a waiver wire pick, but be careful who you cut.
(02/19 12:12 PM) Waiver Wire Mess, Value City - Please Rank who will have more value going forward please.. Robin Lopez, Frye, Blatche, McGee, Garcia, Rodriguez, Gibson, B. Miller, Delfino, Corey Brewer, Hibbert I just cut Iverson for Blatche Frye for Rodriguez Corey Brewer for McGee And I am on the fence in cutting Robin Lopez
(02/19 12:13 PM) Wow, that's a good list. I think Fantasy owners across the board are looking at similar guys, so here goes:
(02/19 12:14 PM) Hibbert, Blatche, Frye, Garcia, Delfino, Rodriguez, Brewer, Miller.
(02/19 12:15 PM) I think after Hibbert and Blatche, these guys may be interchangeable, but that's about it. That's Brad Miller, not Mike Miller.
(02/19 12:15 PM) JT, sactown - will me and my boys carl and spencer be able to co-exist?
(02/19 12:17 PM) That is another issue that Jamey and I discussed on our podcast (again, check that out). Jason Thompson is re-establishing himself in Sacto and I think the departure of Kevin Martin may cause the Kings to lean on him more offensively. With that said, Landry will fill a much-needed void that the team feels it has in the front court, mainly due to the inefficacy of Spencer Hawes. I think Thompson and Landry will do fine together and this is a deathblow to Hawes' fleeting Fantasy appeal in Sacramento.
(02/19 12:17 PM) paul milsaps mother, lousiiana - why has it taken jerry so long to give my boy the rock?
(02/19 12:18 PM) That's funny. I actually think Millsap was probably the biggest loser at the trade deadline. There was a late push to move Carlos Boozer to Miami late, but it fell through and that would have been the golden chance Millsap and his Fantasy owners have been waiting for the last two years. As it stands now, it will be Boozer and Okur with Millsap tagging along the rest of the way. Millsap will get his chance next year when Boozer finally moves out.
(02/19 12:19 PM) thinking ahead, next week - already looking at my lineups for next week, i'm deliberating over my last 2 slots. any suggestions? do i start aaron brooks over tony parker? landry or thomposon with 3 games or mcgee with 4? 10 team h2h 8 cat league
(02/19 12:21 PM) I think I'd go Parker over Brooks. Don't get me wrong I still think Brooks will be a solid high-end Fantasy guard, but I am a little concerned about what the presence of Kevin Martin will do to his shot attempts. Use the weekend to see if my fears are justified. I also don't particularly like Houston's matchups this week. In the long run, I think Brooks will be more valuable than Parker, but I am concerned in the short term. As far as Landry/Thompson/McGee, I think you'll have a clearer picture by the end of the weekend. My gut feeling says Thompson, though.
(02/19 12:21 PM) andrew bynum, LA - am i back for good? hows my hip feelin?
(02/19 12:22 PM) You should know better than me Andrew. Looked fine last night in a tough loss against the Celtics. Back-to-back solid games since coming off the hip injury. Phil Jackson has backed off talks of starting Lamar Odom over you. It's all good!
(02/19 12:22 PM) charlie bell, milwaukee - did i just lose my starting gig for good? or am i in a timeshare?
(02/19 12:23 PM) Yeah, Charlie. I'm sorry. It looks like you will be the odd man out in Milwaukee with Salmons there. Salmons is likely to start at the two guard slot with Delfino at the three and you are back on the bench. It was fun while it lasted, no?
(02/19 12:23 PM) deandre jordan, los angeles - why are you higher on my boy craig smith than me? i am all upside, whereas craig's ceiling is pretty apparent. anyways, he doesn't do much other than score and kinda board. i get boards, shoot a ridiculous %, and block shots at an amazing rate. i just suck at free throws. like BAD.
(02/19 12:25 PM) Jamey and I have gone back and forth about this. I think Smith is the better offensive player and was putting up double-digit numbers leading up to the trade deadline even before Camby was dealt. I think the two players could be hurt if Drew Gooden doesn't get bought out, which seems like a possibility.
(02/19 12:25 PM) alvin, london - is big fundamentals a solid play for the rest of the season? or should we continue to expect the dnp's from pop. i mean, the spurs aren't exactly cruising into the playoffs...they should be fighting for a seed. right?
(02/19 12:26 PM) I think both points are true. I think Tim Duncan will be a solid play the rest of the season and I think Pop will still choose to sit him here and there. What we are seeing is that the Spurs don't have the breathing room they've had in recent years in terms of their run for a playoff spot, so they won't have the luxury to take it as easy with Duncan as they would like.
(02/19 12:26 PM) pops, villa - what the outlook on mcgee for the rest of the season? is he a solid starter? 11/11/2 too much to ask?
(02/19 12:27 PM) Again, I think both points are true. I think McGee could be a solid starter the rest of the way (Blatche and McGee have little competition for playing time), but 11/11/2 is too much to ask. I think he'll be more like 10-7-1. That's not too bad.
(02/19 12:28 PM) newbie, confused - do you have any specific advise in preparation for the playoffs for a 10 team H2H 8 cat league? are there any specific strategic manouevres you could suggest?
(02/19 12:29 PM) Yes. Start looking at the matchups your fringe players will be facing in the weeks of your playoff matchups. It's never too early to start counting games. In fact, I think I'll have to release a games counter for the last few weeks to see if I can clear things up for you and other owners.
(02/19 12:30 PM) kings fan, cali - so who has more value going forward filling the wing slot for the kings - donte greene or francisco garcia? or does udrih come in and reke slides to the 2?
(02/19 12:31 PM) I think Sisco has the track record, he's contributed numbers of a strong No. 3 G/F option in the past when getting the chance to play, which he will, but I think Greene may have more upside. I do think Udrih will eventually slide into a more prominent role as well.
(02/19 12:32 PM) waiver wiped, cali - man, i am pooped from following those trades. finally ended up picking up javale mcgee over deandre jordan. i figure they are actually quite similar in terms of upside and ability...but javale has no one else to fight for time with while jordan has kaman starting over him. also, in javale has 3 more games in my leagues playoffs then jordan. right move right?
(02/19 12:32 PM) yeah, that is sound reasoning. Also, don't forget about Drew Gooden looming around.
(02/19 12:33 PM) RJ, Aztec NM - Hey Sergio, first thing is you are a great help.My question is do you think it is safe to start Mo Williams for next week and do you think A Blatche is gonna be a stud?
(02/19 12:34 PM) Hey RJ, thanks for the kind words. Yes. I liked what I saw from Mo last night and I think he'll get back into the mix more this weekend. I think he'll be a good start, but Cleveland does play just three games next week so keep that in mind if you are in a weekly format.
(02/19 12:34 PM) jigga, nyc - i traded b.rush for j.thomspon just prior to the trade...after the trade, i am not sure if it was the right move. what do you think?
(02/19 12:35 PM) Oh man. I would rather have JT ten times over. Thompson did averaged 15 and 10 in the second half of last season and the first few months of this season before hitting a wall. The shake up in Sacto will open things up for him even with Landry in town.
(02/19 12:36 PM) Please Help, Who is better than who?? - Can you please rank who you would like to have moving forward, please? I have to keep 6-7 of these players.. Brewer, Yi, Brewer, Dunleavy, Frye, B.Mller, Hibbert, R. Lopez, Gibson, Garcia, Thompson, Rodriguez, Blatche, McGee, Delfino, Moute, Rush
(02/19 12:37 PM) Here goes:
(02/19 12:40 PM) Hibbert, Blatche, Jason Thompson, Blatche, Garcia, Delfino, Rodriguez, Dunleavy, Brewer, Miller, Rush, Moute, Yi, Gibson
(02/19 12:40 PM) Jonesyfins, upstate,ny - Do I start T-Mac over JR Smith next week? Thank you H2h standard
(02/19 12:41 PM) Yes. I actually have T-Mac as a start and Smith as a sit, ironically, in our Planner video with Jason Horowitz. I think T-Mac is chomping at the bit and ready to go. He's been training and staying in shape and the Knicks have two very favorable matchups in a four-game week. Smith has less favorable matchups in a three game week.
(02/19 12:41 PM) John, new jersey - Nene and Bayless for Iggy in a keeper league..Bayless was a 10th round pick and can be kept as that..Who wins?
(02/19 12:42 PM) Outside of Nene's center eligibility, I'd still rather have Iggy.
(02/19 12:42 PM) TP, Paris, France - Should I drop Darren Collison for a hot free agent like Sergio Rodriguez ? The problem is that Collison will not finish the season as a starter and I'm in a deep league where there is few reliable point guards...
(02/19 12:43 PM) NOOOOO way. There has to be somebody else you can drop. I understand the reasoning, because CP3 will be back eventaully, but if its one week or if its one more month, Collison will be a high-end guard. I think Rodriguez has nice sleeper value, but he'd be a low-end guard on a week-to-week basis to be used based upon matchup.
(02/19 12:43 PM) Tony, L.A. - Hello Sergio ! Would you drop Lou Williams ? I was expecting a trade a Philly but nothing happened
(02/19 12:44 PM) Yeah. I was holding out hope that Lou's value would get a boost at the deadline as well, but like you said, nothing happened. Outside of a long-term injury for Iverson, he won't return to his early season numbers this year.
(02/19 12:44 PM) Kinkade, The District - I held onto Augustin until the deadline passing on McGee and Jordan, but was able to drop him for S. Rodriguez. Was that an ok move?
(02/19 12:45 PM) That was an excellent move. I think if Felton would have been traded or something like that, Augustin would have had a chance, but he's a keeper league option in my opinion right now. Rodriguez can contribute THIS year down the stretch.
(02/19 12:45 PM) john, new jersey - Nene and Bayless for Iggy in a keeper league..Bayless was a 10th round pick in a 20 team league and can be kept as that..Who wins?
(02/19 12:45 PM) Oops. That was a duplicate.
(02/19 12:45 PM) I'll re-post the answer.
(02/19 12:45 PM) Outside of Nene's center eligibility, I'd still rather have Iggy.
(02/19 12:45 PM) Kinkade, The District - What do you expect from S. Rodriguez now that he's a Knick?
(02/19 12:47 PM) Jamey and I talk about this extensively in our podcast. Go check that out, but in short, I think Rodriguez will overtake Duhon as the primary point guard and while he'll still split the role with him to some extent, he can be a poor man's Jose Calderon (you know, when he was good). Something like 10-12 points and 6 assists per game.
(02/19 12:47 PM) J.J., TX - I've picked Francisco Garcia but I've talked to one of your colleagues at the Sacramento Bee who tells me Udrih should be the new starting SG... What will be the line-up for the Kings ?
(02/19 12:48 PM) That's what I am hearing as well, but that doesn't mean that Sisco won't contribute.. I think we'll see a variety of players fill the Kevin Martin void offensively and still think Garcia will play a part. He could see double-digit shot attempts and remember that Garcia can chip in boards and dimes as well.
(02/19 12:48 PM) QQ, Irvine, CA - Delfino's been a bit erratic recently but his upside is really attractive. Now with Salmons to the Bucks, how does that affect Delfino?
(02/19 12:50 PM) I think it's going to be more bad than good. This is something else Jamey and I discuss on today's podcast (you guys really should check that out :). Delfino was asked to play a bigger offensive role than what he's really capable of following Redd's injury and it got everybody's expectations up. But I think what we've seen from him lately is more his ball park: low-end double digit scoring, decent contributions in rebounds, assists and threes.
(02/19 12:50 PM) alvin, london - wow, that was alot of trades. i own quite a few players affected. salmons which is great. but i also own both landry, as well as J.thompson. also own diaw. are these guys all destined for timeshares?
(02/19 12:51 PM) You are telling me! Salmons is the big winner, as you alluded to. Landry will play a similar role in Sacto compared to what he played in Houston. I think it will be a lot of Landry and Thompson playing over Hawes, which is good news for you. Diaw I think gets hurt by the presence of Ty Thomas. He'll be erratic once again.
(02/19 12:51 PM) Rus, new york - Which one of these three players would you drop. Hedo, CJ watson or Taj Gibson. thanks
(02/19 12:52 PM) Wow, that's tricky. It's either Hedo or Watson, believe it or not. Watson is helping you now, even if it is only in the short term while Maggette and Ellis have been out. Hedo has potential to be great, but he won't be what he was in Orlando the last few seasons. Hmm. It's a tough one, but I think I'd take Watson's short-term value right now.
(02/19 12:52 PM) Braylon Bros, Nebraska - I got sick of Biedrins riding my bench so I dropped him for Tyrus Thomas after news broke of his trade to CHA. Did I make the right move?
(02/19 12:53 PM) Not a horrible move. I still think Biedrins has the potential to get back to being a solid No. 2 center, but he's coming along slower than I would have thought. The presence of Tolliver doesn't help either. You have to make moves like that to win. I like it .
(02/19 12:53 PM) Antho, Paris - Are you still high on Craig Smith now that Drew Gooden is in town ?
(02/19 12:54 PM) Not as high as I was prior to Gooden's trade to the Clippers. I still think Smith is in the same ball park as a suitable No. 3 center to be used as a No. 2 based on matchups and who has the hot hand. I think Smith, Gooden and Jordan are all in that boat.
(02/19 12:54 PM) Francisco Garcia, Sac Town - Would you drop McGee or Robin Lopez for me?
(02/19 12:55 PM) It depends. If it is for just a flex option, yes. If you need Lopez's center eligibility, no. Centers are hard to fine, as Fantasy owners are well aware of .
(02/19 12:55 PM) No Worries, Runnemede, NJ - Serg....I have been holding on to mcgrady all year...what kind of rewards will get from him if any?? is he worth starting next week in my roto leag?
(02/19 12:55 PM) I am going to project him to be around 15-4-4 the rest of the way. He's going to be playing for a contract. He's healthy and he's in a good system. He won't be the T-Mac of old, but he's not just an old T-Mac either.
(02/19 12:56 PM) Yes, start him next week. I think he'll be ready to out of the box. He's one of my starts.
(02/19 12:56 PM) dont forget bout me, NJ - are steve blake or duhon worth dropping delfino for???
(02/19 12:56 PM) I can't forget about New Jersey, my home state.
(02/19 12:57 PM) Follow up on Baron Davis' injury. If he's out a while, I'd rather have him than Duhon with Sergio Rodriguez in town. Delfino is a great add for Week 18 even with the Salmons addition hitting his value. FIVE GAMES next week!
(02/19 12:57 PM) Banjoe, St George UT - So in our CBS AVG H3H format.. Whoe do you think will have the better value after all the trades between Ty Thomas,Salmons , T Gibson, and R Lopez ( I'm in 2 leagues so if you could rank in YOUR preference will be greatly appreciated.) Thanks ..Also GREAT Tweets and Updates .. I follow u SMS so it's a great way to find the up to date news!!@
(02/19 12:58 PM) Thanks for following on Twitter! (twitter.com/CBSGonzalez) I like those players in this order: Salmons, Taj Gibson, Ty Thomas and Roben Lopez. Ty Thomas and Gibson are interchangeable, but I think Ty will continue to be inconsistent.
(02/19 12:59 PM) Kinkade, The District - I picked Rodriguez over McGee, good move?
(02/19 12:59 PM) Depends where you need the help. Assists or Rebounds, point guard or center. Both excellent additions.
(02/19 12:59 PM) Y.O., Washington, DC - Do you think Budinger can continue to average around 10 pts (a couple 3s) with the trades Houston made?
(02/19 13:00 PM) I think he'll be around 9-10 points per game, but not as consistent now with Kevin Martin around to do a lot of the perimeter scoring.
(02/19 13:00 PM) mik, il - hi is this working
(02/19 13:00 PM) Yes.
(02/19 13:00 PM) Jersey Dude, Duh, NJ - Rashard Lewis has been a bust_not quite in the Hedo class, but not far- ( AVG is 20 or LESS) Topped 30 just once all year .. Do u think he will pick it up more or can I actually Thik the absurd and drop him if one of the new " Tradess" takes off ?
(02/19 13:01 PM) I wouldn't recommend dropping Rashard. I understand the frustration and he isn't what you drafted him to be, but he is still valuable and a viable starter.
(02/19 13:01 PM) Alright everyone, that's all we have time for today.
(02/19 13:02 PM) Thanks for joining us. I hope I answered a lot of your questions.
(02/19 13:02 PM) We have more trade analysis up on the site and Jamey and I talk about it in depth on our podcast. Check that out as well on the site.
(02/19 13:03 PM) You can also follow me on Twitter (twitter.com/cbsgonzalez) for more instant Fantasy hoops news.
