Week 8 Fantasy Football Matchups

By | Senior Fantasy Writer

Everyone's excited about DeMarco Murray after his 25-carry, 253-yard, one-touchdown game against the Rams last week. And everyone's pumped for Murray to have the chance to do it again versus an Eagles run defense that's been horrid for all but one 2011 game (their most recent game).

Murray is worth starting, but there are some concerns about him having the opportunity to not only speed off with a breakaway run but have the chances to get that run. The 25 carries he had last week were the most for a Dallas running back since Marion Barber had 25 against the Bucs in October 2008. No Cowboys back had more than 17 carries (Felix Jones, Week 1) this season, and only one back (Jones) had more than 20 carries in a game last year (at Indianapolis in Week 13). The point is, Jason Garrett typically doesn't run the football a lot, and unless Murray opens the game with another monster touchdown run, he's going to have a tough time getting a lot of work. Additionally, the Eagles will put up plenty of points themselves and force the Cowboys to match if they want to win. They typically don't get that done by handing off.

And here's one other note: Only two running backs -- Fred Jackson and Michael Turner -- have actually been given 20 or more carries against the Eagles this year (Cadillac Williams had 19, no one else has had more than 15). What do those guys have in common? They're proven rushers on teams that typically have a run-first mentality. The Cowboys have a pass-first mentality. Here's hoping it doesn't kill DeMarco Murray's week.

Cardinals Key Matchup
Like it or not, the Cardinals' offense will have to trust Kevin Kolb in this game. The Ravens as a whole will be amped for this game after losing a gimme at Jacksonville last week, and the defense shouldn't have problems getting to Kolb. If the Cardinals are to play from behind as expected, look for LaRod Stephens-Howling to see a lot of playing time as he's their best healthy passing-downs back.

Ravens Key Matchup
Nothing says "Get-Well Game" like the Cardinals coming to town. The Ravens are expected to get back to basics with a healthy dose of Ray Rice and a simple game plan for Joe Flacco to administer. With Anquan Boldin facing off against his old squad for the first time and the Cardinals among the league's worst in allowing big pass plays, he and Torrey Smith could both help the offense succeed.

Colts Key Matchup
This is Indy's first intra-division rival they've played since Week 1, so the familiarity should help them out. Curtis Painter needs a rebound game and this might be it. The Titans have been weak against the pass, allowing 10 passing touchdowns in their last four games. The Texans ripped up the Titans with short-area passing that led to big plays last week, and a similar approach could help the Colts. It gives a glimmer of hope that Dallas Clark can make some plays.

Titans Key Matchup
The Titans absolutely have to get their ground game going in this one. Indianapolis is giving up 150 rush yards per game and is tied with the Panthers for the most rushing touchdowns allowed through seven weeks (nine). A lot has been made of the Titans' offensive line not helping Johnson out; their big interior linemen should be able to move around the Colts' front guys and give Johnson room to move. It should be enough to bring home a Titans win.

Jason Hill has come alive with Jacksonville and should strike Fantasy owners as a sleeper. He's tied for 14th in targets over the last four weeks (28) and has 13 grabs for 243 yards and two touchdowns in that span. He's been the best weapon for Blaine Gabbert to go to, and with the Texans struggling with high-targeted receivers, he's a sneaky choice this week.

Gotta love Matt Schaub -- take away Andre Johnson and the Texans quarterback still throws for 932 yards, five touchdowns and two picks in three games. A lot of that has to do with Arian Foster being a factor out of the backfield, and he should be the catalyst for the Texans vs. Jacksonville. With the Jags playing strong against receivers Schaub will likely use his running backs and tight ends again.

The Dolphins will try to run it here, and they might be successful as a collective unit for a while. But with the Giants expected to build a lead, the game will eventually fall on Matt Moore's shoulders. Moore did a better job spreading the ball around last week, firing off passes to Davone Bess close to the line of scrimmage and looking for Brandon Marshall a little bit deeper. But the Giants secondary should be able to contain Miami's receivers and pick up a couple of errant throws from Moore.

Giants Key Matchup
The Giants should squish the fish with everything they do. Ahmad Bradshaw will share a little bit with Brandon Jacobs and both should be candidates for a nice rushing average with a chance to score. But the real meat will be in the passing game, where Eli Manning should find success throwing to all of his targets as the Dolphins have been horrible against the pass. Manning should be able to pick his matchups while receiving good protection and carve up their defensive backs.

Expect the Vikings to keep doing what they do best: Hand off to Adrian Peterson and keep the passing game simple for Christian Ponder. The Panthers have done a good job with opposing wide receivers -- only one guy they've faced has topped 100 yards and it came on the strength of a 70-yard bomb in Week 1 (Early Doucet). But that's because their run defense has been poor. Ponder's best target might end up being Visanthe Shiancoe, who has come alive since Ponder's gotten on the field.

Cam Newton is going to erupt. The Vikings secondary is thin on talent and the linebackers will have a tough time matching up with Newton's targets in the short- and mid-range. With the Panthers aware that it's going to be difficult to run down the Vikings' throats, look for Newton to play keep-away by spreading the ball around and making plays with his legs. Speed receivers have specifically hurt the Vikings in recent weeks, which is perfect for Steve Smith.

Only once in the last two seasons has Drew Brees not attempted at least 32 passes, so you know the Saints will throw plenty. But you have to figure they'll do what everyone else has done and try to rip the Rams' league-worst run defense. Darren Sproles (nine-plus Fantasy points in five of seven games) is an obvious start, but Pierre Thomas should do well replacing Mark Ingram. Thomas has had a minimum of eight touches in every game with Ingram and should pick up more without him.

Everything points to the Rams leaning on their ground game and short-area passing attack. It's their best shot to control the game clock while moving the chains and keeping Drew Brees on the sideline. After producing good numbers against tougher defenses in his previous two matchups, Steven Jackson should be reliable. But the Rams will surely get behind, and the only guy with a decent shot to help Fantasy owners is Brandon Lloyd, who led St. Louis receivers in targets and snaps in his first game with them last week.

Leave it to a John Fox-coached team to limit running backs to less than 100 rush yards in four of six games this season. That's the trademark of Fox's defense, and sure enough the Lions don't boast the running backs to scare the Broncos. But it's a pretty good week for Matthew Stafford to play hobbled if only because the Broncos' pass rush isn't stout and it might be without Elvis Dumervil. Stafford will throw a good amount, and even with Champ Bailey back the Denver secondary shouldn't be a threat to the Lions.

The Broncos can't afford to pass up running the ball here even though Willis McGahee isn't expected to play. Detroit's run defense has struggled in four of its last five while its pass defense has really been great all year long. The Lions could end up doing what the Dolphins did: Load up the box and make Tim Tebow throw. It worked out for him last week, but the sense here is that the Broncos will try to run the ball first before trusting in Tebow's arm. Might be tougher for him to rack up stats in this matchup.

Two weeks ago the Redskins missed the chance to run the ball a ton against the Eagles and it cost them. Last week they ran the ball very well early on against the Panthers until Tim Hightower got hurt and until they fell behind. This week they face yet another weak run defense -- the Bills have allowed rushers to total 100 yards and/or score in all but one game and Ahmad Bradshaw punished them in their last game. The battle at the line of scrimmage between the Bills and Redskins won't be pretty as both sides are missing starting talent, but Torain should get some good stats.

Cam Newton was the first quarterback to pick apart the Redskins defense last week, and he did it with a big dose of short-area passing and a handful of deep-ball completions. Ryan Fitzpatrick could easily do the same given his personnel, but after a long look at the matchup I can't definitively say he'll exploit the Redskins. There's a direct and obvious correlation between Fitzpatrick's stats and his pass attempts; so long as Fred Jackson does his job (and he should, the Redskins have gone south vs. the run), Fitzpatrick won't have to throw a lot.

Seattle hasn't been consistently great against opposing running backs but the likes of Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard shouldn't scare them off. That's going to be OK for Cincinnati as Andy Dalton should be able to get time and pick apart a Seattle secondary that's lost several starting cornerbacks. A.J. Green and Jermaine Gresham have been tough to stop and the matchup is right for them. Ex-Seahawks cornerback Kelly Jennings probably knows a few secrets about his old team too.

Seattle might look to win matchup battles against the Cincinnati linebackers, which could be down two starters. The Bengals have allowed rushing touchdowns in every game since Week 2. If Marshawn Lynch plays (as Pete Carroll has intimated) he could do the same. If that doesn't work the Seahawks will be in trouble as it's tough to trust Charlie Whitehurst after last week's debacle. He faces another stingy secondary that hasn't allowed more than 221 yards in a game this season.

Expect the Browns to throw a lot in this game. Colt McCoy is second in the NFL in average pass attempts per game, and with the 49ers defense coming off a bye at home, they should put the screws to Montario Hardesty and take their chances with McCoy. With Mohamed Massaquoi out and Benjamin Watson an easy target to take away, this could be the week Greg Little finally finds the end zone. He leads the team in targets, so the odds are in his favor.

49ers Key Matchup
The 49ers land another matchup where they can lean on Frank Gore (and Kendall Hunter to an extent) and let Alex Smith manage the game instead of being a factor in winning it. The Browns secondary made minced meat out of the Seahawks last week and has been typically solid overall, so anything the Niners can do to from having to throw a lot will go a long way. Of the eight receiving touchdowns the Browns have allowed, five have gone to tight ends (one on a trick play).

Patriots Key Matchup
Chances are the Patriots will use their tried-and-true formula of spreading the Steelers out with four-wide formations and let Tom Brady find the matchups he wants before taking the snap. But this year Pittsburgh has not been its usually stout self against the run, and there's an inkling that the Patriots will run a little bit more than normal, especially if they build a lead. Both Patriots tight ends are matchup nightmares for the Steelers – Rob Gronkowski scored three touchdowns at Pittsburgh last year.

Steelers Key Matchup
Ben Roethlisberger's numbers are better now that his offensive line has protected him better and now that he's throwing quick passes. Both of those factors should continue. The Patriots might manufacture a pass rush with the blitz but Roethlisberger can negate it with the short passing attack. Expect New England to test Big Ben's O-line, both in the early parts of the game and certainly later on when Roethlisberger has to throw to keep up. Note: Rashard Mendenhall has scored in four straight home games.

Cowboys Key Matchup
Expect the outcome of this game to fall into Tony Romo's hands, which is probably what the Eagles want. Part of the reason why the Eagles bolstered their secondary this offseason was to compete with pass-happy teams like the Cowboys. That secondary isn't as good as it looked against the Redskins two weeks ago, but it's better than it was back in Weeks 2 and 3. They have certainly done a good job against No. 1 receivers. Romo hasn't had a good game in Philadelphia since 2007, and unless the Cowboys trust in Murray to carry the offense, Romo will have a shot at 300 yards but with some turnovers along the way.

Eagles Key Matchup
The Eagles are typically very good coming off the bye, and this game should be no exception. The Cowboys secondary has played better of late but still have flaws, and Michael Vick obviously has the weapons to exploit them. The hunch here is that Dallas will try to run the same defense as they did against the Patriots in an attempt to contain DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. That would force Vick to check-down a bunch, but he's still capable of posting solid numbers doing that. One reason why: LeSean McCoy, who probably won't rush for a lot of yardage but should make up for it as a receiver.

Chargers Key Matchup
This isn't the best spot to expect Philip Rivers to return to form. This is a big game for Kansas City as they can get back into the AFC West race with a win in front of the home crowd. But the Chiefs' secondary isn't as good as it looked last week against Oakland, nor is it as good as it looked against Rivers back in Week 2. The Chargers could get conservative here and run a bunch while working the middle of the field (Antonio Gates should be busy), and it should end up in an efficient stat line for Rivers.

Chiefs Key Matchup
Look for the Chiefs to attack the Chargers on the left side of the field, both on the ground and through the air. The Chargers might change out struggling cornerback Antoine Cason for rookie Marcus Gilchrist, but either way Dwayne Bowe should get targeted a lot. Bowe has scored in three of his last five against San Diego, including one in Week 2. And though we can't pinpoint a go-to running back for Kansas City, chances are the best bet is Jackie Battle, and he'll test the Chargers front seven.
