Marlon Byrd strings together four singles in loss

(9:47 am ET) Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd put together a strange performance Monday, in a 7-1 loss to the Mets.

Byrd, who ranked fourth in the National League with 20 home runs this season, had a fairly quiet four-hit game in the loss. Byrd went 4 for 5 with all of his hits going for singles, and he neither scored nor drove in a run.

Byrd is now hitting .273/.321/.482 in 105 games. 


Carlos Ruiz hitting well since return

(9:41 am ET) Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz continues to hit the ball well since his return from the disabled list, as he put together another multi-hit game Monday against the Mets.

Though the Phillies lost 7-1, Ruiz had one of his best performance of the season in the loss. He went 4 for 4 in the game with one double, and he drove in the team's lone run in the loss.

Ruiz has put together three multi-hit games over the last four since his return from a concussion. He was hitting .257 prior to the DL trip, but is now at .272/.375/.382 for the season. 


Vance Worley spins first career CGSHO Monday vs. Giants

(12:56 am ET) Pirates pitcher Vance Worley turned in a masterful effort Monday, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out three and recording his first career complete-game shutout in his team's 5-0 win over the Giants.

Worley (4-1) opened the game by tossing four perfect innings, and he managed to face the minimum through seven innings thanks to two double plays and one caught-stealing. Hunter Pence threatened the CGSHO with a two-out triple in the ninth, but Worley was able to slam the door immediately and finish the gem with 100 pitches on the nose. He owns a 2.54 ERA and 30:8 K:BB ratio in 49 2/3 innings after the excellent effort. Worley is slated to take on the Diamondbacks Saturday.


Josh Harrison slugs seventh home run Monday

(12:52 am ET) Pirates outfielder Josh Harrison went 2 for 3 with a walk and a solo home run in his team's 5-0 win over the Giants Monday.

Harrison followed up a four-run first inning by tacking on a fifth run in the second with his homer to left field. Coming off another big performance, he is now 6 for 9 with two home runs and two stolen bases in his last two games. Harrison has hit .298/.336/.460 with seven home runs, 34 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 285 at-bats.


Madison Bumgarner struggles in loss vs. Pirates

(12:52 am ET) Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner took a loss Monday, giving up five earned runs on six hits and two walks in four innings and striking out two in his team's 5-0 defeat against the Pirates.

Bumgarner (12-8) matched his season debut for the shortest outing of the season in Monday's loss, which ends his three-game winning streak. He ran into trouble immediately, surrendering four runs in the top of the first inning before giving up a solo home run in the fifth. Bumgarner owns a 3.41 ERA and 143:36 K:BB ratio in 145 innings. He's scheduled to take on the Mets Sunday.


Boone Logan tosses perfect inning in rehab game

(12:52 am ET) Rockies pitcher Boone Logan tossed a perfect inning during a rehab game Monday.

Logan entered in the sixth inning. He tossed a perfect frame, picking up one strikeout during the process. He threw 17 pitches, 10 of which were strikes. 


C.J. Wilson fans seven in final rehab start

(12:49 am ET) Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson began a minor-league rehab assignment Monday with Double-A Arkansas. Wilson picked up the win and allowed two runs on four hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks over 5 1/3 innings. Of his 81 pitches, 49 were strikes.

Wilson's rehab should come at an end after this start, as he is expected to join the rotation Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Justin Morneau picks up two hits in rehab start Monday

(12:49 am ET) Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau picked up two hits during a rehab start Monday. 

Morneau singled twice during his first rehab game. He's been sidelined since July 13 due to a neck injury. Morneau finished 2 for 4.


Chris Carter launches three-run blast in win over A's

(12:41 am ET) Astros designated hitter Chris Carter made his presence felt with just one swing of the bat Monday night at home against the A's.

Carter smacked a three-run home run in the third inning to give his team an early lead. He finished 1 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI in a 7-3 victory. He owns a .214/.292/.479 slash line with 21 homers and 49 RBI in 309 at-bats.

Brett Oberholtzer gets back in win column

(12:38 am ET) Astros pitcher Brett Oberholtzer turned in a quality start Monday night against the A's, improving to 3-7 on the year. The southpaw permitted three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two over 6 2/3 innings of a 7-3 victory.

Oberholtzer picked up his first win since May 30. Over his last three starts covering 20 innings, Oberholtzer has allowed seven earned runs. He owns a 4.30 ERA and 53:20 K:BB ratio in 83 2/3 innings. He will make his next start Saturday at home against Toronto.
