Jon Lester Ks nine in dominant win over White Sox
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:45 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester put together a dominant outing on Thursday, outdueling Chris Sale and the White Sox for his second win of the season.

Lester (2-2) tossed five scoreless innings before allowing a run to score on an infield single to Adam Eaton in the sixth inning. He surrendered one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out nine over eight innings of work. He tossed 112 pitches, 75 of which were called strikes.

Lester has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his first four starts. He will look for his third win of the season Tuesday at home against the Red Sox.

Denard Span gets through rehab game without issue
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:42 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Denard Span played in his first rehab game Friday at Class A Hagerstown, as part of his recovery from a concussion.

Span played in the field and batted four times, and seemed to have no trouble, scoring three times. He went 1 for 2 with two walks, while adding an RBI.

Span is likely to play in one more rehab game before making a possible return this weekend.

LaTroy Hawkins needs just five pitches for fourth save
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:36 pm ET) Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins made quick work of the Padres Thursday, en route to his fourth save of the season.

Despite allowing a leadoff single to Chris Denorfia, Hawkins needed just five pitches to finish off the save. He retired the next batter on a flyball to right, and then induced a double play to end the game, closing out the 3-1 win.

Hawkins has four saves in four opportunities, and holds a 1.59 ERA in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Brian Roberts collects three hits in win over Rays
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:34 pm ET) Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts returned to action Thursday and broke out of a mini-slump with a three-hit night against the Rays in Tampa.

Roberts entered Thursday with just one hit over his previous 24 at-bats. He tripled in a run in the second, doubled in the sixth and singled in a run in the seventh. He finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI in a 10-2 win. He is hitting .194 with just three RBI in 36 at-bats this season.

Edinson Volquez gets late help in first win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:30 pm ET) Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez continued his strong start to the season Thursday, and finally picked up his first win as he took down the Brewers, 11-2.

Volquez seemed destined for another no-decision, exiting the game after seven strong innings with the score tied 2-2. Fortunately, the Pirates offense came alive in the next earning, granting him the win.

Volquez was charged with two runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings of work. He struck out just three, but was efficient throughout the game, needing just 77 pitches to finish his seven innings of work.

Volquez has opened the season well, posting a 1.71 ERA in four appearances, three starts. He will look for his second win in his next start, scheduled for Tuesday against the Reds.

Sergio Santos coughs up late lead in wild outing
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:29 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher Sergio Santos had some command issues, as he became the first player in Major League Baseball history to throw three wild pitches in an inning and not get an out. He was charged with his first loss and blown save of the season Thursday night against Minnesota.

Santos entered the game with a two-run lead in the eighth inning. He allowed three runs on no hits and three walks, failing to record an out. He tossed 16 pitches, only four which were called for strikes.

Santos entered Thursday with a 3.38 ERA and left Thursday's nightmare outing with a 8.44 ERA over 5 1/3 innings. He is 4 for 5 in save chances with a 2.06 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB ratio over that span.

Yovani Gallardo gets little support in another quality start
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:24 pm ET) Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo pitched well again Thursday against the Pirates, but received little support as he settled for a no-decision in an 11-2 loss.

Gallardo tossed his fourth quality start in a row to open the season, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. He struck out six and ultimately finished with scoreless frames in five of six innings, but left the game with a 2-2 before the bullpen imploded.

Gallardo is off to a great start through four appearances, though he is just 2-0 thanks to some poor run support over the last two starts. He has a 1.46 ERA in 24 2/3 innings heading into his next start, schedule for Tuesday against the Padres.

Dustin McGowan lasts only four innings in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:22 pm ET) Blue Jays pitcher Dustin McGowan was not at his best as he lasted only four innings on Thursday, but managed to escape with a no-decision in a 9-5 defeat to the Twins in Minnesota.

McGowan allowed a solo home run to Brian Dozier in the opening frame and a two-run double to Chris Colabello in the fifth before the end of his night. He was charged with three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three over four innings of work. He ran his pitch count to 85, with 49 of his pitches called for strikes.

McGowan has allowed seven runs over his first 13 innings pitched to start the season. He'll take the hill Wednesday at home against Baltimore.

Big seventh inning sinks Ian Kennedy
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:18 pm ET) Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy was on top of his game for much of his start Thursday, but fell apart late in a 3-1 loss

Kennedy made it through seven innings in the start, and six of them were nearly flawless. He allowed just one hit through his first six innings and appeared well on his way to his second win even with little support. Unfortunately, three hits and a walk in the seventh inning led to three runs and left Kennedy on the wrong side of a 3-1 loss.

Kennedy struck out seven while allowing four hits and two walks in his seven innings, while lowering his ERA to 4.13. He is 1-3 through four starts, with just nine runs of support total heading into his next start, set for Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Franklin Morales picks up first win thanks to late rally
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:14 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Franklin Morales tossed his first quality start of the season Thursday, in a 3-1 win voer the Padres.

Morales allowed just one run on a fourth-inning solo home run that put him down 1-0, which was actually where the score stood when Morales exited the game. Fortunately, the offense rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning, in time for Morales to get the win.

Morales was charged with one run on four hits and a walk in six innings of work, while striking out five. He pushed his record to 1-1, with a 4.82 ERA. His next start is set for Tuesday against the Giants.
