Royals' Jeremy Guthrie stays in rotation; Chris Young odd man out

(5:29 pm ET) The Royals will make a tweak to their starting rotation as they aim to make another deep postseason run this year.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (7-7) will keep his spot in the rotation, while Chris Young (8-6) will head to the bullpen as the odd man out, according to The Kansas City Star.

Neither have been especially sharp as of late -- Young has a 5.11 ERA with 11 walks and seven home runs allowed in his last five starts; Guthrie sports a 5.58 ERA with nine walks and five home runs allowed in his previous five outings.


Mariners 1B Logan Morrison (thumb) remains sidelined on Friday

(5:25 pm ET) Mariners first baseman Logan Morrison remains out of the starting lineup due to a thumb injury on Friday. He will miss his second straight game after suffering the injury in Wednesday's contest. 

Youngster Jesus Montero, who was recalled from Triple-A on Friday, will take over at first base for the injured Morrison. It is not currently known when Morrison is expected to return to the lineup.


Mariners 2B Robinson Cano still out with abdominal strain

(5:22 pm ET) As expected, Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano remains out of the starting lineup on Friday. Cano is dealing with a strained abdominal muscle, and will miss his third straight game.

Rookie Ketel Marte will make his big-league debut on Friday, as he will fill in at second base for Cano.

Cano is expected to be sidelined until early next week.


Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg set for rehab start Monday

(5:19 pm ET) Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg is set to make his second rehab start Monday for Triple-A Syracuse.

Strasburg, who pitched a mediocre four innings for the Chiefs on Wednesday, has been sidelined for four weeks with an oblique injury. He has made just three starts for Washington since May 29.


Mariners recall pitchers Jose Ramirez, Rob Rasmussen

(5:16 pm ET) The Mariners have recalled pitchers Rob Rasmussen and Jose Ramirez from Triple-A on Friday. T

Rasmussen, who was acquired from the Blue Jays for Mark Lowe, made one appearance for the Jays this season, after seeing 10 games in relief last year. He did go 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA with the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate this season.

Ramirez came to the Mariners from the Yankees in the Dustin Ackley deal on Thursday. He made three relief appearances for the Yankees this year, allowing five runs in three innings. 


Giants place Tim Hudson on DL

(5:13 pm ET) The Giants placed pitcher Tim Hudson on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, per the San Francisco Chronicle.

Hudson was likely to lose his spot in the rotation after the team acquired Mike Leake prior to the trade deadline. 

Hudson said that the shoulder had been bothering him. "We'll go with that." 


Cardinals demote P Miguel Socolovich, DFA P Marcus Hatley

(5:12 pm ET) The Cardinals have demoted reliever Miguel Socolovich to Triple-A Memphis and designated for assignment fellow pitcher Marcus Hatley to create a roster spot for just-acquired Jonathan Broxton, per the Belleville News-Democrat.

Socolovich has performed quite well this season to the tune of a 1.54 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings. He has allowed one earned run in his last 11 2/3 innings pitched.

Hatley hurled 1 1/3 shutout innings in two appearances during his brief stint with St. Louis in early July.


Yankees' Cashman: Luis Severino to make next start in majors

(5:11 pm ET) Yankees starting pitcher prospect Luis Severino will make his next start in the major leagues, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Friday.

The 21-year-old Severino and top-100 prospect has been outstanding since his promotion to Triple-A. He is 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 11 starts at Triple-A. For the season, he is 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 19 starts (eight starts at Double-A).

The right-hander is 23-11 with a 2.30 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in four minor-league seasons. He is striking out 9.1 batters and walking 2.3 batters per nine innings.


Indians promote OF Jerry Sands, send pair to Triple-A

(5:01 pm ET) The Indians have promoted outfielder Jerry Sands from Triple-A Columbus as part of several moves made Friday.

They have also sent newly acquired outfielder Abraham Almonte to the same team and activated starting pitcher Josh Tomlin off the disabled list. He too has landed in Columbus.

Sands batted .375 in 24 at-bats with Cleveland early in the year. He continued to produce with the Clippers with a .287/.409/.538 slash line and a current seven-game hitting streak.


Rangers recall C Chris Gimenez from Triple-A on Friday

(4:56 pm ET) The Rangers have recalled catcher Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. Gimenez is taking the roster spot of Tomas Telis, who was traded to the Marlins.

Gimenez has spent the duration of the season at Triple-A, batting .243 with six home runs in 69 games. He will be in the starting lineup on Friday against the Giants, batting ninth in the order for manager Jeff Bannister.
