Will Middlebrooks listed as day to day

(11:22 pm ET) Red Sox manager John Farrell told WEEI that third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who left Thursday's game with lower back spasms, is listed as day to day.

The skipper said Middlebrooks may have injured back running out of the box in last plate appearance against the White Sox on Wedneday. He has been held without a hit in his last 12 at-bats.

Octavio Dotel throws bullpen session

(11:21 pm ET) Tigers relief pitcher Octavio Dotel threw a bullpen session Thursday at the team's spring training complex, MLB.com reports. He has been dealing with elbow inflammation.

It was Dotel's first session on the mound since being shut down after experiencing a setback last week. He hasn't pitched for the Tigers since April 19.


Christian Garcia feels '100 percent'

(11:17 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Christian Garcia told MLB.com his forearm is "100 percent" after pitching an inning in an extended spring game Thursday.

Garcia is expected to join Double-A Harrisburg next week to start on his rehab assignment. He will be used as a reliever in the minors, though there was talk in spring training of him becoming a starter.

Ryan Dempster gets rocked again

(11:11 pm ET) Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster continued to struggle as he endured his shortest outing of the season and took the loss Thursday night against the Indians.

Dempster (2-5) surrendered a run-scoring double to Drew Stubbs in the second. He then gave up a two-run single to Mark Reynolds and allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice in the fourth. The right-hander was charged with four runs and five hits over three innings. He struck out four and walked four on 85 pitches.

Dempster is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in his last four starts after starting the season 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA. He is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday at home against the Phillies. He has allowed 14 runs -- 12 earned -- in his last 15 innings at Fenway Park.

Darren Oliver could land on DL

(11:10 pm ET) Blue Jays reliever Darren Oliver has been dealing with a sore shoulder for the past 7-10 days, which could require a stint on the disabled list, Sportsnet.ca reports.

"I'm sure we'll talk about it at some point," Oliver said.

Oliver has not pitched since May 18 and has allowed three runs -- two earned -- in his last two innings. He has a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances.


Drew Stubbs has three extra-base hits

(11:06 pm ET) Indians right fielder Drew Stubbs was 3 for 5 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and a run  in a 12-3 win over the Red Sox Thursday. Heading into the game, Stubbs hadn't had a hit since May 17, going 0 for 10 in his previous five games.

Stubbs's third three-hit game of the season bumped his batting average to .255. His triple was his first of the year.


Phillies bring up Michael Martinez

(11:02 pm ET) The Phillies purchased the contract of infielder Michael Martinez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Thursday. Martinez hit .226 with 12 RBI and three stolen bases in 31 games at Triple-A.

Zach McAllister rides to fourth win

(10:59 pm ET) Indians starting pitcher Zach McAllister rode a wave of run support to his fourth win Thursday night, holding the Red Sox to three earned runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out five in the 12-3 win. All three runs scored on a David Ortiz home run in the third inning.

McAllister hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start this season and has a 2.89 ERA in 56 innings over nine starts. He'll take on the Reds in Cincinnati Tuesday.


Manny Machado has three doubles

(10:57 pm ET) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado enjoyed his 10th multi-hit game of May during Thursday's 12-6 loss to the Blue Jays.

Machado had three doubles, including a two-run hit in the third. He finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and became the only player since 1916 to have multiple three-double games before his 21st birthday.

Machado has a .345/.368/.560 line with three home runs and 12 RBI in 20 May games. He is hitting .330 in 203 at-bats.

Nick Markakis extends hitting streak with home run

(10:51 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis hit his fifth home run Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Markakis' solo homer came in the eighth off Brandon Morrow. He finished 1 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI in a 12-6 loss.

Markakis has an eight-game hitting streak. He is hitting .343 (12 for 35) with two homers and six RBI over that span.
