Ryan Zimmerman making progress
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:40 pm ET) Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is making progress from his hamstring injury, according to MASN.

Zimmerman received an MRI earlier in the week which revealed the injury was healing. He was cleared to begin jogging. Despite the progress, Zimmerman still hasn't started swinging a bat just yet.

Steve Pearce exits with abdominal strain
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8:05 pm ET) Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce was forced out of Friday's game against the Twins with a right abdominal strain, the team announced. He left the game in the third inning and was replaced by Jimmy Paredes. Pearce is hitting .289 with 16 homers and 37 RBI over 284 at-bats.

Yusmeiro Petit will remain in rotation for now
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:44 pm ET) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit will remain in the team's rotation for at least another turn, according to CSN.

Petit will make his next start in Colorado. He started in place of Tim Lincecum Thursday, and turned in a solid start. Petit has a 3.44 ERA over 86 1/3 innings.

Roberto Hernandez may start Monday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:41 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Roberto Hernandez might start Monday, according to MLB.com.

Hernandez threw a bullpen session Friday, and is on pace to throw Monday. Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to pitch Sunday.

Hyun-Jin Ryu should start Sunday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:38 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is in line to start Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Ryu has been working his back from a glute injury. He's been able to get through simulated games without any issues. Ryu has a 3.28 ERA over 137 1/3 innings.

Dilson Herrera interesting, but raw
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7:12 pm ET) Apparently, the Mets aren't just looking to trudge their way through the season's final month. Instead of turning to some journeyman type to fill in for Daniel Murphy, who went on the DL Friday with a calf injury, they reached all the way down to Double-A and pulled up 20-year-old Dilson Herrera, who hadn't played a single game above low Class A prior to this year.

True, the Mets also acquired hard-throwing reliever and potential closer candidate Vic Black in the deal that sent Marlon Byrd to the Pirates last August, but Herrera may have been the real prize. A toolsy type who has also played some shortstop, he's taken a big step forward in the minors this season, batting .323 with 13 home runs, 23 steals and an .858 OPS. And though he's split his at-bats almost evenly between two stops, his numbers only improved following his promotion to Double-A Binghamton, where he's hit .340 with a .967 OPS.

Does that mean he's ready to play in the big leagues? That's probably a stretch. Rougned Odor took a similar step forward last year -- and with a better pedigree to begin with -- and he's struggled to transition to the big leagues at at 20.

Still, in NL-only and long-term keeper leagues, Herrera's upside makes him worth a flier.

Desmond Jennings dealing with left knee soreness
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7:08 pm ET) Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings was a late scratch Friday night against the Red Sox due to left knee soreness, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Jennings is hitting .244 with 10 homers and 36 RBI over 479 at-bats.

Jesus Montero won't play for the rest of the season
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6:58 pm ET) Mariners designated hitter Jesus Montero won't play for the rest of the season, according to the Seattle Times

Montero was involved in an incident in the minors Thursday night. He was supposed to begin a rehab assignment, but has been pulled from that assignment due to an altercation with a team employee. General manager Jack Zduriencik said Montero's season was over. The club's main focus is to get Montero to work out his personal issues.

Yusmeiro Petit could have more in store
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6:57 pm ET) When the Giants bumped Tim Lincecum to the bullpen earlier this week, they weren't clear about whether or not it would be just a one-turn thing, making Petit's role going forward just as unclear.

But he showed Monday why you should be rooting for him to stick.

Granted, he won't always be as good as he was against the Rockies, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in six innings, but in seven starts to finish out last season, he was certainly serviceable, compiling a 3.59 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

I've always wondered why he hasn't gotten more of a look as a starter. A former prospect with strong numbers out of the bullpen who clearly has the endurance and pitch variety to fill in from time to time deserves better than a lifetime banishment to long relief. Fortunately, at age 29, his career hasn't passed him by yet.

I wouldn't expect more than serviceable numbers from Petit as a starter, which means in Rotisserie leagues, you're probably staying away. But his relief pitcher eligibility makes him an intriguing sleeper in Head-to-Head points leagues, provided he sticks in the starting rotation.

Jed Lowrie ready for rehab stint
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(6:45 pm ET) Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie (finger) will start a minor-league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Sacramento, the Bay Area News Group reports. Lowrie could return from the disabled list as early as Tuesday, per the paper.
