Diamondbacks LF David Peralta hits two-run homer in win Monday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:20 pm ET) Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta went 2 for 4 in the 6-4 win over the Nationals on Monday. He singled and connected on his 10th home run of the season.

Peralta's two-run smash gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. He is batting .387 with seven RBI over his past nine games (seven starts).

Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed homers among four hits in win
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:13 pm ET) Shorstop Nick Ahmed got the Diamondbacks on the board early, as he belted a solo home run in the third inning of Monday's 6-4 win over the Nationals. Ahemed, who went 4 for 4 and scored twice, cranked out his seventh home run of the season.

Ahmed had been struggling at the plate, as the four hits on Monday matches the total from his previous seven games. The four-hit game was the first of his young career.

Nationals SP Doug Fister allows three homers in loss Monday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(10:06 pm ET) Nationals starter Doug Fister had a rough outing against the Diamondbacks on Monday. The right-hander was bitten by the longball, as he allowed a trio of home runs in the 6-4 loss. On the night, he allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings. He did strike out six without walking a batter, but overall it was another shaky start for Fister.

Fister (4-7, 4.60 ERA) allowed a solo home run to Nick Ahmed in the third inning before David Peralta (two-run shot) and Welington Castillo went back-to-back in the fourth.

This is the fourth time in his past six starts that Fister has allowed at least four runs. He owns a 5.29 ERA over that stretch.

Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler records two-out save on Monday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(9:57 pm ET) Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler was called upon to get a two-out save in Monday's 6-4 win over the Nationals. The ninth inning began with the D-Backs leading 6-0, but the Nationals tacked on four runs before Ziegler entered the game.

Ziegler retired both men to face him, recording his 19th save of the season. He has a 1.17 ERA on the year.

Diamondbacks SP Zack Godley wins third start, blanks Nationals
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(9:53 pm ET) Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley won his third straight start to begin his career on Monday night. The young right-hander held the Nationals scoreless over six innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Godley left the game after throwing 83 pitches--48 strikes--with his club leading 6-0. They would go on to win the game 6-4.

This is the second of the three starts in which Godley tossed six shutout innings. He allowed three runs in his previous start against the Mariners, as he owns a very fine 1.50 ERA to start off his MLB tenure.

Cubs' Kris Bryant to avoid head-first slides following Sunday's scare
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(9:45 pm ET) After a scary play at second base almost left him with a head injury on Sunday, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant says he will give up head-first sliding. Bryant slid into second base in the fifth inning of Sunday's win over the Brewers, and was immediately taken out of the game with diziness after crashing into shortstop Jean Segura.

He was able to return to the lineup on Monday, but he said he will no long employ the use of a head-first slide.

"I have only one head, only one life," Bryant said per the Chicago Tribune. "There's nothing really to joke about with that. So we're taking this very seriously.

"It's instinct. I think that was the hardest I've run. I run very hard every time and looking back, I think I'll be sliding feet first."

Rangers' Chris Gimenez, Bobby Wilson to split time at catcher
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:42 pm ET) Rangers catchers Chris Gimenez and Bobby Wilson will continue to split time behind the plate, reports MLB.com.

With catcher Robinson Chirinos on the disabled list, manager Jeff Banister said he would like to pair each catcher with certain pitchers. Wilson is hitting .169 with six RBI in 59 at-bats, while Gimenez has one hit in five at-bats this season.

Braves 1B Freddie Freeman (oblique) leaves Monday's game
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:17 pm ET) Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was forced to exit Monday's game against the Giants due to a right oblique injury, the team announced.

Freeman went 0 for 2 before suffering a strained oblique and is considered day to day. He was replaced by Chris Johnson.

Padres RP Brandon Maurer attributes fatigue to recent struggles
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(9:11 pm ET) Padres reliever Brandon Maurer took his fourth loss of the season on Sunday, when he allowed a three-run, walk-off home run to the Marlins' Adeiny Hechavarria.

Maurer, who has already established a new career-high in appearances, has allowed seven earned runs over his past five innings of work, spanning seven outings. The right-hander believes fatigue could be a partial reason for his recent struggles.

"I've been tired the last couple days," said Maurer, per MLB.com. "I've stepped up the workload in the training room, trying to flex some stuff [inflammation] out.

"I got hit in the arm [in New York]. I think that might've had to do with my slider not being quite as sharp, pushing it more than snapping it off."

Overall, Maurer has had himself a good season so far. He is 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA in 50 innings of relief.

Nationals' Stephen Strasburg (oblique) strikes out 11 in rehab start
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8:58 pm ET) Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg was excellent in what could be his final rehab start on Monday. Strasburg pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 11, throwing 85 pitches (55 strikes) in the outing.

Strasburg has been on the disabled list for four weeks dealing with an oblique strain. He has made two rehab starts now, allowing five earned runs over 9 2/3 innings.

He could be back with the Nationals by the weekend, though the team has not made any official announcements regarding Strasburg's return.
