Ricky Nolasco set to throw bullpen session Sunday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1:00 pm ET) Twins general manager Terry Ryan said starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco (elbow) is slated to throw a bullpen session Sunday, per MLB.com.

Marlins remain interested in trading for Jim Johnson
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:58 pm ET) The Marlins remain interested in trading for Athletics reliever Jim Johnson, sources told The Miami Herald. Starting pitcher prospect Adam Conley is a name the A's have discussed with the Marlins about a player they could get in return.

FOX Sports reported the Marlins and A's nearly had a deal in place in early June, which would have included Miami's Competitive Balance pick in the draft (No. 39 overall) for Johnson. However, Miami dealt that pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Bryan Morris.

Cubs considering moving Kris Bryant to right field
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:50 pm ET) The Cubs have had internal discussions about transitioning prospect Kris Bryant from third base to right field, according to CSN Chicago. However, the talks have not progressed to making that move just yet.

"He can do it," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "He played center in college, and he’s played right. He feels good out there. The biggest focus for him right now is he’s working on his defense. He is almost 6-6, and with that the fundamentals of playing third base are more challenging.

"In the future, I would never say never that we wouldn’t put him out there. But right now, our focus is third."

Torii Hunter grabbing some pine against Diamondbacks
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:47 pm ET) Red-hot Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter will cool his heels Wednesday in Arizona. Don Kelly is set to start in his place.

The 39-year-old Hunter, who receives occasional days off, owns a five-game hitting streak during which he has two home runs, seven RBI with five runs scored.

Bruce Chen set to start Sunday in place of Jason Vargas
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:43 pm ET) Veteran left-hander Bruce Chen is set to start Sunday for the Royals against visiting Cleveland, again in place of Jason Vargas, who is still recovering from an appendectomy.

Chen filled in quite admirably Tuesday night by yielding one run in five innings against the White Sox and earning the victory.

Cubs pleased with how Javier Baez has bounced back
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:42 pm ET) Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer tried to downplay Tuesday the significance of prospect Javier Baez moving from shortstop to second base at Triple-A Iowa.

"The Baez second-base thing is really more big-picture than anything else," Hoyer said, per CSN Chicago. "We want to increase his versatility. We thought it was the right thing to do to start putting him there. ... These moves are not connected.

"We went into the year thinking we would move him around a bit earlier, and he struggled offensively. We thought it was going to be the wrong time to have this guy worry about a defensive change. (So) we held off on it, and really waited until he got going offensively. We’re pretty proud of what he’s done this year. In some ways, it’s been ideal for him."

Baez had a chance to be up in the majors by now, but a slow start offensively cost him that opportunity. Still, he looks like a potential September callup and has gotten on track offensively at Iowa. He hit .275 with four home runs and 21 RBI in 28 June games and is batting .275 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 18 July games.

"He really built on every single month, until the last three or four weeks, when he’s been outstanding. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see that trajectory. In the minor leagues, you want to see guys finishing strong. You want to see them conquer that level, and his ability to fight through what was a difficult start has been really impressive."

Kyle Gibson lined up for Saturday start
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:35 pm ET) Ron Gardenhire is hopeful that Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson, who was scratched from his Wednesday start, can pitch Saturday instead. If not, another pitcher must be promoted, per Fox Sports.

Gibson is dealing with a stiff back.

Ryan Zimmerman unable to start Wednesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:34 pm ET) Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday at Colorado after leaving Tuesday's game due to a strained right hamstring. Anthony Rendon moved over from second base to start in Zimmerman's absence at third base.

Wil Myers slowly working his way back
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:29 pm ET) Rays outfielder Wil Myers has begun some light throwing and hitting as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that has prevented him from playing since May 30, per the Tampa Bay Times.

Myers is not expected back on the field until at least mid-August.

Chad Qualls: I want to remain with Astros
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:21 pm ET) Astros closer Chad Qualls might not remain a closer if he's traded before the deadline. That could be one reason he has expressed a desire to stay in Houston.

"I can't have any control over that," he told the Houston Chronicle. "I've been traded numerous times in my career. But you know, I signed here obviously to try to help this team win. And like I said from the beginning, if we could start to turn this organization around and start bringing winning ways to Houston, I thought that'd be pretty cool, and I always want to be a part of it."

Qualls went on to say that's why he signed a two-year deal with the Astros with a team option for another year and that he would like to retire with Houston. He has certainly done his part in helping the team improve this year by taking over the closer duties and nailing down 11 saves in 13 chances with a 1.78 ERA.
