    Phillies sign trio to minor league contracts

    (5:14 pm ET) The Phillies have signed first baseman Chris McGuiness and pitchers Sean O'Sullivan and Kevin Slowey to minor league contracts.

    The Phillies released O'Sullivan after the season. McGuinness earned 34 at-bats with Texas in 2013, but did not play at the major league level last year. Slowey was released by Miami in June after a poor performance.


    Sabean: Giants 2B Scutaro undergoes back surgery

    (4:28 pm ET) Giants general manager Brian Sabean has announced that second baseman Marco Scutaro, who lost almost all of last season to back issues, had fusion surgery Sunday that won't reveal if he can return to action for at least 4-6 months.

    Scutaro came back in mid-July, but was sidelined again after just 11 at-bats and done for the year.


    Mariners RHP sent to Tacoma

    (4:05 pm ET) The Mariners have dispatched right-handed reliever Logan Bawcom to Triple-A Tacoma after designated him for assignment last week.

    The 26 year old pitched in 40 games at Tacoma last season.


    Marlins RHP Haren seeking trade to Angels or Padres

    (3:54 pm ET) Veteran right-hander Dan Haren, who is considering retirement, is hoping the Marlins trade him to the Angels or Padres because he would like to return to the west coast, per CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

    The 34-year-old Haren pitched for the Dodgers in 2014 and enjoyed his best season since 2011. He compiled a 13-11 record and 4.02 ERA.


    Report: Padres sign Josh Johnson to incentive-laden deal

    (2:46 pm ET) The contract signed by pitcher Josh Johnson with the Padres is for one year and $1 million with incentives that could raise it to $6.25 million, per Yahoo Sports.

    Johnson must prove himself healthy first. He has not pitched a full season since 2012 and has been plagued by injuries for the last five years.

    Giants dispatch 1B Villanola to minors

    (2:28 pm ET) The Giants have outrighted first baseman Angel Villanola to the minors. He is no longer on the 40-man roster.

    Villanola has yet to earn an at-bat in the major leagues.


    Twins sign 1B Brock Peterson to minor league deal

    (2:17 pm ET) The Twins have signed journeyman first baseman Brock Peterson to a minor league contract. He played in 117 games at the Triple-A levels of the Nationals and Dodgers organizations last year. He had a strong season with a .301 average, 15 home runs and 67 RBI in 117 games.

    Pair of Cubs clear waivers and sent to Triple-A

    (2:10 pm ET) Cubs right-hander Donn Roach and infielder Logan Watkins have cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple-A Iowa.

    Roach pitched in 16 games for San Diego last season before being claimed by the Cubs in mid-November. Watkins joined the Cubs late in the year and managed 16 hits in 65 at-bats.

    Royals secure waivers and assign pair to Triple-A

    (1:20 pm ET) The Royals have secured outright waivers on outfielder Moises Sierra and right-hander Casey Coleman, both of whom have been assigned to Triple-A Omaha. Coleman can reject the assignment and become a free agent.

    Yankees 1B Jones trying not to 'drool' over short porch

    (1:09 pm ET) Yankees recently acquired first baseman/designated hitter Garrett Jones anticipates getting plenty of action for his new team.

    Jones added in an interview with MLB Network Radio that "you start drooling as a power guy" over the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium, but that he does not want to alter his approach at the plate.

    His power numbers have decreased over the last two seasons. Jones slugged 30 home runs in 899 at-bats in 2013 and 2014 combined after mashing 27 in 475 at-bats in 2012.
