Astros 3B Luis Valbuena grabbing some pine against Indians
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:06 pm ET) Astros third baseman Luis Valbuena is catching a rare break Monday in Cleveland. He is out of the lineup after starting 21 of the previous 23 games.

Marwin Gonzalez is set to man the position instead.

Valbuena is not getting benched for recent struggles at the plate. He has hit safely in four of his last five games and boasts a career-high .438 slugging percentage.

He did go 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in his only start against Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who is on the mound Monday.

Braves 2B Jace Peterson gets first day off in a month
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:05 pm ET) Braves second baseman Jace Peterson was held out of the starting lineup Monday against the Brewers. It was the first time he was held out of the starting lineup since June 6.

Peterson could probably use a bit of a breather, as he is mired in a 7-for-54 slump in his last 14 games. He has one home run, two doubles, five RBI, four runs, six walks and 18 strikeouts in that span.

Royals CF Lorenzo Cain out of Monday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:57 pm ET) Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain is not in the lineup Monday night against Tampa Bay. The reason has yet to be revealed, but he has been dealing with an ongoing hamstring problem.

Cain has been fine at the plate. An 0-for-3 performance Sunday ended a five-game hitting streak in which he ripped 11 hits in 19 at-bats.

Padres catcher Derek Norris gets first start in leadoff spot Monday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:54 pm ET) Padres catcher Derek Norris moved into the leadoff spot Monday against the Pirates for the first time this season, becoming the ninth San Diego player to hit leadoff in 2015. This is Norris' first career start atop the lineup, but he made four plate appearances over two games in the leadoff spot in 2014.

Norris has been mired in an offensive slump over the last month. Since June 6, he is batting .163 in his last 27 games. However, he does have five home runs in that span.

Rays RF Steven Souza sidelined Monday with pinkie injury
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:48 pm ET) A hand issue has Rays right fielder Steven Souza out of the lineup Monday night in Kansas City. He sustained a cut to his right pinkie finger on a hit-by-pitch and required stitches.

That is just one of his problems. Another is a 2-for-31 slump that has weakened his average to .210.

Jung Ho Kang likely to see bulk of PT at 3B in Harrison's absence
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:45 pm ET) Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang drew the start at third base Monday against the Padres after it was announced starting third baseman Josh Harrison was placed on the disabled list due to a thumb injury. Harrison is expected to miss six weeks.

Kang will likely see the bulk of playing time at third base with Harrison sidelined. They are the only two players to start at third base this season for Pittsburgh. Harrison has a team-high 51 starts and Kang started at third base for the 31st time Monday.

Pirates 3B Josh Harrison out six weeks due to thumb injury
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:34 pm ET) When the Pirates posted their lineup card Monday against the Padres, starting third baseman Josh Harrison was noticeably absent. It was later revealed Harrison was placed on the 15-day disabled list and be sidelined six weeks due to torn thumb ligaments.

Harrison injured his left thumb Sunday on a slide into second base in the seventh inning. The Pirates announced he will undergo a second opinion later in the week.

Jung Ho Kang, who replaced Harrison in the starting lineup Monday, will likely see the bulk of playing time at third base in Harrison's absence. They are the only two players to start at third base this season for Pittsburgh.

Harrison heads to the DL having hit safely in five straight games. Since June 7, he is batting .333 in his last 25 games. Unfortunately, he hasn't homered in his last 43 games.

Tigers claim 1B Marc Krauss in wake of Miguel Cabrera injury
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:26 pm ET) Hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, the Tigers have claimed first baseman Marc Krauss, who was designated for assignment by the Rays on Saturday.

Krauss could be used as a short-term replacement for injured slugger Miguel Cabrera. He must hit far better than he did for the Angels and Rays this season to be of much help. Krauss has just six hits in 45 at-bats this season and owns a .192 lifetime average.

Pirates LF Starling Marte sidelined a day after suffering injury
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:24 pm ET) Pirates left fielder Starling Marte was not in the starting lineup Monday against the Padres a day after leaving Sunday's game due to discomfort on his left side. Sean Rodriguez drew the start in Marte's absence.

Marte is hitless in his last three games (eight at-bats). However, he is still batting .327 in his last 28 games.

Nationals P David Carpenter on leave as P Sammy Solis called up
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:17 pm ET) The Nationals have recalled left-hander Sammy Solis from Double-A Harrisburg and placed righty David Carpenter on the paternity list.

Solis made his major league debut by pitching in five games for Washington in late April and early May. He managed three shutout appearances before getting clobbered for five runs in three innings over his last two.

Carpenter, who came over in a mid-June trade from the Yankees, has since given up just one run in six innings.
