David Phelps held out Saturday despite being ruled available
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:09 pm ET) Yankees reliever David Phelps had a bruise in his stomach after being hit by a line drive on Friday, MLB.com reports. He was ruled available to pitch out of the bullpen, but with the game well out of hand, he was not used in a 16-1 defeat.

The Yankees will close a four-game set with the Rays on Sunday.

Jordan Schafer gets X-rays on finger Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:02 pm ET) Braves outfielder Jordan Schafer had the middle finger on his right hand X-rayed after Saturday's win over the Mets, MLB.com reports. The X-rays came back negative, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Schafer, who is day to day with the injury, didn't indicate how he injured the finger. He did go 0 for 1 and score a run as a pinch hitter Saturday, but the injury apparently wasn't sustained on his slide into second base. He is 1 for 9 with two stolen bases this season.

Ryan Hanigan goes deep twice, plates five runs
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:01 pm ET) Rays catcher Ryan Hanigan uncorked a pair of home runs Saturday night against the Yankees.

Hanigan homered off Ivan Nova twice, including a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the fourth. He added a single and went 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored and five RBI in a 16-1 victory. He is hitting .243 three home runs and 10 RBI in 37 at-bats.

Jose Valverde struggles Saturday, could be out as closer
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:50 pm ET) Mets pitcher Jose Valverde surrendered a three-run home run in a nonsave situation in his team's 7-5 loss to the Braves Saturday, and it appears manager Terry Collins is ready to make a change in the closer role, ESPNNewYork.com reports.

All three of the runs charged to Valverde were unearned due to an error the pitcher made on a bunt, and with three straight ugly outings to his credit, the closer sounds like he'll be removed from a ninth-inning role. Kyle Farnsworth and Gonzalez Germen seem like the most likely candidates to inherit closing duties.

Wil Myers lifts off twice in win over Yankees
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:49 pm ET) Rays outfielder Wil Myers continued his recent success at the plate Saturday night, launching a pair of home runs in his team's 16-1 win over the Yankees.

Myers took starter Ivan Nova deep for a solo home run in the opening frame and reliever Matt Daley for a three-run shot in the fifth. He added a double and finished 3 for 4 with a walk, three runs scored and four RBI. He is hitting .262/.338/.410 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 61 at-bats.

Justin Morneau smacks home run in win Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:46 pm ET) Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run in his team's 3-1 win over the Phillies Saturday.

Morneau's fourth-inning home run extended the Rockies' lead to 3-0 and ultimately made the difference in the victory. It was the third home run of the season for Morneau, who's hit .333/.369/.567 in 60 at-bats.

Kyle Kendrick takes loss in quality start Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:44 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was saddled with a loss Saturday despite giving up just three earned runs on six hits in seven innings and striking out three in his team's 3-1 loss to the Rockies.

Kendrick (0-2) has posted quality starts in back-to-back outings, but he's still looking for his first win of the season. He owns a 3.60 ERA and 17:6 K:BB ratio in 25 innings. Kendrick is slated to take on the Dodgers in Los Angeles Thursday.

Evan Longoria goes yard, plates four runs in blowout win
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:43 pm ET) Rays third baseman Evan Longoria made his presence felt at the plate on Saturday, launching his second home run of the season in his team's 16-1 win over the Yankees.

Longoria took New York starter Ivan Nova deep for a two-run home run in the third inning. He drove in a run on sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and slapped an RBI single in the sixth. He finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBI. In 18 games, he is hitting .348 with two homers and 10 RBI in 66 at-bats.

Michael Cuddyer unlikely to start Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:41 pm ET) Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer is unlikely to start in Sunday's series finale against the Phillies, MLB.com reports.

"He's still pretty sore," manager Walt Weiss said. "We'll have to watch him closely the next few days here and see how he responds to treatment and go from there."

Cuddyer is dealing with a hamstring injury and hoping to avoid a trip to the disabled list.

Jordan Lyles pitches well in win vs. Phillies
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:39 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles gave up just one unearned run on five hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out two in his team's 3-1 win over the Phillies Saturday.

Lyles (3-0) has done a good job limiting scoring over his last three starts despite not posting a strong strikeout rate. The Phillies' only run came in the eighth inning, when the only batter Lyles pitched to in the inning came around to score. He owns a 3.42 ERA and 14:6 K:BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings. Lyles is slated to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles Friday.
