Ryan Sweeney deposits one into stands, plates four runs vs. Cards

(8:10 pm ET) Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney launched his second home run of the season and plated four runs in a win over the Cardinals at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon.

Sweeney took Joe Kelly deep in the second inning for a game-tying three-run home run. He also slapped a run-scoring single in the following frame. He finished 2 for 4 with one run scored and four RBI in a 7-6 victory. He owns a .221/.264/.302 slash line with 15 RBI in 149 at-bats.

Justin Grimm picks up relief win vs. Cards

(8:07 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Justin Grimm (3-2) picked up a relief win Friday afternoon at home against the Cardinals.

Grimm allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning of work in the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, Luis Valbuena launched a two-run go-ahead home run, which proved to be the difference. Grimm owns a 4.87 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP over 44 1/3 innings of relief this season.


Travis Wood helps his own cause with HR, settles for no-decision

(8:04 pm ET) Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood helped his own cause with his third home run of the season, but was unable to factor into the decision Friday afternoon at home against the Cardinals. The southpaw permitted five runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings of a 7-6 victory.

Over his last three starts covering 16 1/3 innings, Wood has allowed 14 earned runs. He owns a 5.06 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP over 21 starts (121 innings). His next start will come Wednesday at home against Colorado.

Kevin Siegrist serves up go-ahead home run vs. Cubs

(8:00 pm ET) Cardinals relief pitcher Kevin Siegrist (1-2) took the loss Friday afternoon against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Making his first appearance since his return from the disabled list, Siegrist allowed a two-run home run to Luis Valbuena in the seventh inning, which proved to be the difference. The left-hander was charged with two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out two over 1 1/3 innings of a 7-6 defeat. He owns a 4.22 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP over 21 1/3 innings this season.


Joe Kelly serves up two home runs in no-decision

(7:57 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly was unable to make it out of the fifth inning in a no-decision against the Cubs Friday afternoon.

Kelly allowed a three-run home run to Ryan Sweeney in the second and a solo home run to opposing pitcher Travis Wood in the fourth inning. The right-hander was charged with five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings of work. Of his 95 pitches, 56 were strikes.

Kelly has allowed five-plus runs in two of his last three starts. He owns a 3.90 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB ratio over his first six starts (30 innings). He will make his next start Wednesday at San Diego.

Hector Rondon picks up save No. 12

(7:52 pm ET) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon worked his way around a hit and needed only __ pitches to close out a 7-6 win over the Cardinals Friday afternoon. Rondon has converted 12 saves in 15 tries. He owns a 3.72 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over 36 1/3 innings of relief. 

Scooter Gennett targeting Sunday return

(7:47 pm ET) Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett remains hopeful of returning to the lineup in time for Sunday's series finale at home against the Mets, manager Ron Roenicke told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Friday. Gennett has missed three consecutive games because of a quad injury.

"I think that's probably what the plan is," Roenicke said. "He's going to go through everything today, make sure all phases are good, and if he comes out of that they'll let me know for the game today."

Gerrit Cole to start rehab assignment Monday

(7:44 pm ET) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told reporters that starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will start a minor-league rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Indianapolis. Cole will be limited to approximately 80-85 pitches, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Joe Mauer able to take soft toss Friday

(7:43 pm ET) Twins first baseman Joe Mauer was able to take some soft toss swings Friday, according to MLB.com.

Mauer has been working his back from an oblique injury. He's been able to do some hitting drills lately, which is a good sign. Mauer has been sidelined since July 1 with the injury. There's no timetable for his return yet. 


Robbie Erlin nearing rehab assignment

(7:14 pm ET) Padres pitcher Robbie Erlin threw a simulated game and is getting closer to starting a minor-league rehab assignment, MLB.com reports Friday. Erlin has been sidelined since May 22 due to elbow soreness. He posted a 4.53 ERA over 47 2/3 innings prior to the injury.
