David Phelps to make return as reliever
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:13 pm ET) Yankees pitcher David Phelps will make his return to the club as a member of the bullpen, MLB.com reports Thursday.

Phelps, who is working his way back from a right elbow injury, is still in the process of beginning to throw. At this point, there is no timetable for his return to the team, but there is not enough time left in the season for him to rehab and return as a starter.

"I think at this stage, we're going day by day," Phelps said. "We'll hopefully amp it up when we get through this week. I took two weeks off, it's not like I'll be on the mound this weekend."

Yan Gomes exits with illness
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:09 pm ET) Indians catcher Yan Gomes was forced out of Thursday's game against the Twins, due to an illness. He was replaced behind the plate by Roberto Perez.

Gomes is considered day to day at this point, with the Indians beginning a series against the Astros Friday.

Matt Moore to begin throwing soon, aiming for May return
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:00 pm ET) Rays pitcher Matt Moore is recovering as expected from Tommy John surgery, and he told MLB.com Thursday he could begin a throwing program soon.

"I have sock throws starting this coming Monday," Moore said. "I'll do those six times, two weeks worth, Monday, Wednesday, Friday times two. After that, I'll be at 20 weeks. That will be five months [since his surgery] and I'll start my throwing program."

Moore is aiming for a May 2015 return to the majors, after missing all but two starts this season while recovering. Though he did add he might hit the brakes in his recovery a bit, if he feels rushed at the beginning of next season.

"If it was June, honestly, I think it would be best for all parties," he added. "Our squad in general and myself, just to make sure that we're not trying to get to May [and rushing things]."

Swollen thumb limited Carlos Corporan
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:56 pm ET) Astros catcher Carlos Corporan has been limited a bruised right thumb over the last two months, MLB.com reports Thursday.

"It's been hurting," he said before Thursday's game. "Just the fact I don't play every day, it's something you have to keep treating and then take care of. I'm just trying to forget about it and perform the best I can."

Coporan injured the thumb in mid-June and has been trying to deal with the injury by adding extra padding while catching. The fact that he does not play everyday has helped him avoid the DL, but this might be an injury he has to deal with for the rest of the season.

"I'm trying to do my best and take some medicine and try to get the best treatment I have for my thumb," he said. "The [training staff] has been doing a pretty good job. They've kept me in the lineup, avoiding the DL."

George Kontos recalled as 26th man
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:49 pm ET) The Giants reliever George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno Thursday as the 26th man for Thursday's doubleheader, and he will be available for the second game the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Kontos had a 3.00 ERA in 21 innings for the Giants earlier in the season, and will return to Fresno following Thursday's game. He has a 2.08 ERA in 47 2/3 innings at Triple-A.

Recently claimed Neal Cotts will not be traded
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:21 pm ET) Though he was claimed on revocable waivers and considered a trade candidate this week, ESPN.com reports Thursday Rangers reliever Neal Cotts will not be traded.

Cotts was claimed by an American League team, but that was done to block him from going elsewhere. He will remain in Texas for the rest of the season, where he has a 3.48 ERA in 54 1/3 innings of work.

Cubs swap in two minor-league players Thursday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:16 pm ET) The Cubs recalled infielder Logan Watkins and reliever Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa Thursday, to take up two vacant roster spots.

Both players might be with the team briefly, as Watkins is simply taking Starlin Castro's spot whil he is on bereavement leave. Rosscup is up with the team to replace Edwin Jackson (lat), but might go back down when the team needs another starter.

Felix Doubront set for rehab finale at Double-A
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:07 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Felix Doubront is set to make his final rehab appearance for Double-A Tennessee Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Doubront, who is working his way back from a calf injury, has yet to pitch in a game for the Cubs since being acquired. He has allowed six runs in 10 innings so far on his rehab assignment.

Starlin Castro placed on bereavement list
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:00 pm ET) The Cubs placed shortstop Starlin Castro on the bereavement list Thursday, putting him away from the team for a minimum of three days. It is not known how long he is expected to be out, though he cannot be on the list for longer than seven days.

Edwin Jackson hits DL with strained lat
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:58 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Edwin Jackson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, due to a strained right lat.

Jackson was chased in the third inning of his start Wednesday after allowing eight hits and seven runs, and it appears the injury is at least part of the reason. The team had discussed moving him to a bullpen role after Wednesday's outing, but that decision will have to wait until after this injury heals. At this point, there is no timetable for his return.

Jackson has struggled mightily this season even before the injury, with his ERA ballooning to 6.09 in 26 starts.
