Derek Holland could start Tuesday

(12:26 am ET) Rangers pitcher Derek Holland could make his first start of the season Thursday against the Mariners, according to the Dallas Morning News

Holland was able to go 87 pitches during his most recent rehab start. Following the game, he declared himself ready to pitch in the majors. The club will need a fifth starter Tuesday with Yu Darvish sidelined. Holland is being considered for that start. 

Holland has been sidelined the entire season after having offseason surgery on his knee. 


Justin Upton drives in three

(12:03 am ET) Braves outfielder Justin Upton drove in three runs Thursday against the Reds.

Upton singled in two runs in the third inning, and drove in another on a sac fly. He finished 2 for 3, with one run scored and three RBI. Upton also walked during the contest. 


Will Middlebrooks forced to return Thursday

(8/21/2014) Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks returned to action Thursday against the Angels.

Middlebrooks replaced outfielder Yoenis Cespedes in the fourth inning. Cespedes left the game due to personal reasons. Middlebrooks wound up providing the only hit for Boston. He finished 1 for 2, with a double. Middlebrooks said his hamstring is not 100 percent, but he was able to play through the injury. 


Yoenis Cespedes leaves due to 'family medical emergency'

(8/21/2014) Red Sox outfielder Yoenis Cespedes left Thursday's game due to a "family medical emergency."

Manager John Farrell did not want to get into specifics regarding the issue out of respect to Cespedes. The club is hopeful that Cespedes will be able to play Friday. He was replaced by Will Middlebrooks in the fourth inning. 


Steven Souza picks up a hit, RBI in first rehab game

(8/21/2014) Nationals outfielder Steven Souza knocked in a run during his first rehab game Thursday.

Souza went 1 for 2, with an RBI during the game. He struck out in his other plate appearance. He also managed to steal a base. Souza has been sidelined since August 9 due to a shoulder injury. 


Stolmy Pimentel tosses scoreless inning on rehab

(8/21/2014) Pirates reliever Stolmy Pimentel tosssed a scoreless inning during a rehab start Thursday.

Pimental got the start for the Double-A club in Altoona. He threw a perfect inning, picking up one strikeout. Pimental threw nine pitches, seven of which were strikes. 


Padres release Brooks Conrad

Conrad was recently designated for assignment by the club. They chose to cut him loose instead of trying to send him to the minors. Conrad hit .100 over 30 at-bats in the majors. 


Andrelton Simmons goes deep Thursday

(8/21/2014) Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons went yard Thursday against the Reds. 

Simmons struck in his first at-bat. He worked a seven-pitch at-bat against David Holmberg, hitting a 75 mph curveball for a solo shot. He drove in another run on a groundout during the game. Simmons finished 1 for 5, with one run scored and two RBI. 


Aroldis Chapman makes an appearance during blowout

(8/21/2014) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman made an appearance during a blowout Thursday.

With his team trailing 8-0, Chapman entered the game in the eighth inning. He was his usual self, striking out two hitters and getting Chris Johnson to flyout. Chapman had not pitching in a few days due to shoulder soreness. He was replaced by Skip Schumaker in the ninth inning. 


Jason Grilli picks up first save with new club

(8/21/2014) Angels pitcher Jason Grilli picked up his first save since joining the club Thursday.

Grilli entered with a two-run lead, and slammed the door shut. He struck out the first batter he faced, and induced a flyout and a groundout to end the game. Huston Street was unavailable after pitching the past two days. It was Grilli's 12th save of the season, and first since becoming a member of the Angels.
