Mariners promote hot-hitting C Jesus Montero

(5:05 pm ET) Up-and-down catcher Jesus Montero is up again. He has been promoted by the Mariners in the wake of their trade with the Yankees in which Dustin Ackley was sent packing, per the Tacoma News Tribune.

Montero has just 27 big-league at-bats over the last two seasons. He went 3-for-10 in a recent stint with Seattle. But he is having perhaps his finest year at the Triple-A level with a .346/388/.551 slash line and 75 RBI in 376 at-bats.


Yankees trade two prospects to Mariners for OF Dustin Ackley

(4:57 pm ET) The Mariners have finally given up on left fielder Dustin Ackley, whom they have traded to the Yankees for outfield prospect Ramon Flores for right-handed reliever Jose Ramirez, per CBSSports Baseball Insider Jon Heyman

Ackley has been a disappointment since his arrival in the big leagues, but his left-handed power bat could produce considering the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. He owns a poor .215/.270/.306 slash line this season and has just two hits in his last 15 at-bats.

Ramirez, who has pitched in 11 games for the Yankees over the past two seaons, boasts a 2.90 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 49 innings this year at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre.

Flores has compiled a .286/.377/.417 slash line for the same team in 2015.


Angels CF Mike Trout back in lineup against Astros

(4:45 pm ET) Angels slugger Mike Trout has returned to action Thursday in Houston after sitting out since June 26 with a wrist issue.

Trout will try to pick up where he left off in that game, when he slugged four hits, including two home runs, and drove in five.


Thumb issue has Mariners 1B Logan Morrison out Thursday

(4:32 pm ET) Mariners first baseman Logan Morrison is still sidelined with a thumb injury that forced his removal from the game Wednesday. He is out of the lineup Thursday in Minnesota.

Morrison was in a terrible slump before going down. He's batting .125 (6-for-48) over his last 12 games.


Mariners 2B Robinson Cano sidelined again Thursday

(4:29 pm ET) An abdominal strain has Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano out of the lineup again Thursday night at Minnesota.

Cano, who sat Wednesday as well, will likely need to serve as a designated hitter upon his return to get back in action.


Mets RP Jack Leathsich undergoes Tommy John surgery

(4:28 pm ET) Mets reliever Jack Leathersich underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday, according to ESPN. The left-hander is not on the major-league roster, so he will not accumulate major-league service time while rehabbing over the next year.

Rangers 2B Rougned Odor gets night off against Yankees

(4:22 pm ET) Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor, who has finally slowed down after a torrid run, is set to sit Thursday against the Yankees.

Odor, who has not missed a game since July 1, is 0-for-13 over his last three games. He had nine hits in his previous 16 at-bats.


Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis misses second straight game

(4:16 pm ET) Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis missed a second straight start Thursday against the Royals due to a shoulder injury. Ryan Goins started in his absence.

Travis is batting .357 with a .402 on-base percentage, .488 slugging percentage and .890 OPS in 26 games since coming off the disabled list in late June. He has one home run, eight doubles, 14 runs, nine RBI, seven walks and 16 strikeouts in that span.


Astros DH Evan Gattis grabbing some pine Thursday

(4:13 pm ET) Astros designated hitter Evan Gattis is catching a rare break Thursday night against the Angels. He is out of the lineup.

Gattis is not sitting for struggling. He has hit safely in six of his last seven games and has 16 home runs and 58 RBI on the year despite a slow start.


Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion out again Thursday

(4:13 pm ET) Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion was sidelined a second straight game Thursday against the Royals due to a jammed finger. Chris Colabello started in Encarnacion's absence for a second straight game.

Encarnacion is batting .259 (15 for 58) with two home runs, three doubles, six RBI, five runs, 10 walks and eight strikeouts in his last 16 games.
