Cardinals promote Zach Petrick to Triple-A

(3:22 pm ET) Cardinals starting pitcher prospect Zach Petrick was promoted to Triple-A Memphis Sunday following the announcment Tyler Lyons will join the St. Louis rotation.

Petrick, who was the team's minor-league pitcher of the year in 2013, was 2-0 with a 0.48 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in three starts for Double-A Springfield.


Joe Kelly 'responding better than anticipated' to treatment

(3:18 pm ET) Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Sunday starting pitcher Joe Kelly is "responding better than anticipated" as he gets treatment for a left hamstring strain, per MLB.com. Kelly has begun to play catch.

Scott Hairston 'right on schedule' in recovery

(3:12 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Scott Hairston (oblique) has been taking swings in the batting cage and hopes to begin a minor-league rehab assignment soon, per MLB.com. Hairston, who is swinging at 75 percent intensity, said he's "right on schedule" in his recovery.

"I'm just setting really small goals right now," Hairston said. "We'll complete steps one and two before we see the finish line."


Darin Mastroianni designated for assignment Sunday

(3:06 pm ET) The Twins have designated outfielder Darin Mastroianni for assignment Sunday.

Mastroianni was shipped out in favor of Sam Fuld, who the team claimed on waivers. Mastroianni was hitless in 11 at-bats this season. 


Clayton Kershaw believes he's ready for rehab assignment

(3:05 pm ET) Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (back) threw a "full effort" three-inning simulated game Sunday, per MLB.com. Kershaw expects the next time he takes the hill it will be on a rehab assignment.

"This was full effort for me," he said. "You can't simulate the adrenaline of a big league game. But as far as [a] 10 a.m. sim game, that's all I got."

Kershaw added the soreness and stiffness from the teres major muscle strain in his back that landed him on the disabled list "is gone, and now it's just building back up" arm strength.


Pirates-Brewers get into brawl, two players ejected

(2:58 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez and Pirates outfielder Travis Snider were ejected from Sunday's game after both teams got into a benches-clearing brawl

The melee ensued after Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole approached Gomez following Gomez's triple in the top of the third inning. Gomez had to be restrained as Cole walked back to the mound, but punches were exchanged once both teams came onto the field. Gomez appeared to have thrown the first punch.


Shaun Marcum throwing three innings in rehab

(2:39 pm ET) Indians pitcher Shaun Marcum has started throwing three innings during rehab, according to the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Marcum is recovering from shoulder surgery. He was able to throw a bullpen session Saturday. Manager Terry Francona said there's still no timetable for Marcum to return to the majors. 


Blake Beavan could start throwing this week

(2:35 pm ET) Mariners pitcher Blake Beavan could begin throwing again this week, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Beavan is dealing with a shoulder injury, and will be examined at some point during the week. If it goes well, there's a chance he'll begin some light throwing. 


Taijuan Walker could resume throwing this week

(2:31 pm ET) Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker could start throwing again this week, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Walker is scheduled to be examined by a team doctor Wednesday. If that exam goes well, there's a chance Walker will begin throwing again at the end of the week. Walker has been dealing with arm issues all spring. He experienced a setback prior to a rehab start earlier in the week and was shut down for a few days.


James Paxton could throw this week

(2:27 pm ET) Mariners pitcher James Paxton could begin throwing this week, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Paxton is dealing with a back injury, but has been making progress. "Paxton has started to do a lot of exercises in the swimming pool," trainer Rick Griffin said. "He’s doing exercises specifically for his strain." Paxton will be able to begin light throwing based on whether his examination goes well this week.
