Daisuke Matsuzaka flies back to New York for MRI on elbow

(5:17 pm ET) Though the Mets are currently on the tail end of their road trip, the team has sent pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka back to New York to have an MRI on his elbow.

Matsuzaka gave up a pair of home runs in two innings of relief on Thursday. He owns a 3.87 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, along with one save over 74 1/3 innings of work this season. It remains to be seen how long he'll be sidelined for moving forward.

Jonny Venters nearing a bullpen session

(5:15 pm ET) Braves pitcher Jonny Venters is nearing a bullpen session, according to MLB.com.

Venters was able to throw from 100 feet Friday. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Venters could start throwing bullpen sessions on the team's next road trip. Venters has missed the entire season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.


Jemile Weeks placed on Triple-A DL with groin issue

(5:14 pm ET) Former brief Oakland standout second baseman Jemile Weeks has been placed on the 7-day Triple-A disabled list by the Orioles with a groin strain.

Weeks has been decent this season for Norfolk with a .279/.394/.397 stat line and 10 doubles in 55 games. He managed three hits in 11 at-bats during a short stint with Baltimore.


Pedro Alvarez still can't return Friday

(5:10 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez missed his second game in a row Friday against the Rockies, due to discomfort in his left knee. He remains day to day moving forward as a result of this injury, which has kept him out since he left Wednesday's game.

Hamstring still a problem for Marwin Gonzalez

(5:07 pm ET) Though he was able to start in Thursday's game against the Athletics, Astros infielder Marwin Gonzalez was ultimately forced out due to lingering soreness.

Gonzalez is also out of the lineup Friday against the Marlins, as he continues to deal with the injury. He told the Houston Chronicle he expected to avoid a trip to the disabled list, but will likely be limited through the weekend series against the Marlins. 


Wil Myers hit off a tee Friday

(5:02 pm ET) Rays outfielder Wil Myers was able to hit off a tee Friday, according to the Tampa Bay Times

It was the first time since his wrist issue that Myers was able to hit off a tee. Myers is still aiming for a mid-August return. He hit .227/.313/.354 prior to the injury.


Jake Smolinski latest Texas player to land on DL

(5:02 pm ET) Jake Smolinski is the newest member of the huge Texas Rangers Disabled List Club. The rookie left fielder was placed on the DL Friday, retroactive to July 22, with a bone bruise.

Smolinski, who sustained the injury when he fouled a pitch off his left foot, was off to a strong start to his major league career with a stat line of .389/.450/.472.


Coco Crisp absent from Friday lineup

(4:57 pm ET) Athletics leadoff hitter Coco Crisp is nowhere to be found in the Friday lineup against Texas. He is getting the night off as John Jaso will top the order.

Crisp has cooled off since Independence Day with seven hits, including six singles, in 38 at-bats. But he still boasts a healthy .278/.377/.422 stat line and has scored 51 runs despite just 277 at-bats on the year.


Yoenis Cespedes back in action against Rangers

(4:53 pm ET) Athletics slugger Yoenis Cespedes is set to start Friday against Texas after missing the Thursday game with a thumb injury.

Cespedes has been on a tear of late with eight hits in his last five games, including a two-tater performance Wednesday against Houston in which he drove in five runs.


Asdrubal Cabrera remains sidelined Friday

(4:52 pm ET) Though he was hoping to return in time for the start of this weekend's series against the Royals, Indians infielder Asdrubal Cabrera is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game. Cabrera has not played since Monday as a result of the injury.
