Ian Desmond out of the lineup Friday

(3:41 pm ET) Though X-rays came back negative, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond is still out of the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Phillies.

Desmond suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch Thursday and had to leave the game. He remains day to day moving forward. 


Rays activate Yunel Escobar from DL Friday

(3:34 pm ET) The Rays activated infielder Yunel Escobar from the 15-day disabled list as expected Friday, after his recovery from a shoulder injury.  

Escobar has been out since suffering the injury June 24, when he was hitting .244/.322/.328 in 262 at-bats. 


Christian Colon sent to Triple-A

(3:23 pm ET) The Royals optioned infielder Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha Friday, in order to clear a roster space for the return of Norichika Aoki from the disabled list.

Colon appeared in six games with the Royals, going 4 for 12 with three runs scored.  


Norichika Aoki returns from DL

(3:21 pm ET) The Royals activated outfielder Norichika Aoki from the disabled list Friday, after his recovery from a groin injury.

Aoki appeared in three rehab games at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, picking up one hit in 10 at-bats. He was hitting .263/.326/.324 in 262 at-bats prior to the injury.  


Tyler Lyons sent down to Triple-A

(3:13 pm ET) The Cardinals optioned pitcher Tyler Lyons to Triple-A Memphis as expected Friday.

The move was made in order to open up a roster spot for the return of Joe Kelly from the disabled list. Lyons posted a 5.79 ERA in 28 innings for the Cardinals. 


Jaime Garcia transferred to 60-day disabled list

(3:11 pm ET) The Cardinals officially moved pitcher Jaime Garcia to the 60-day disabled list, in order to free up a 40-man roster spot.

Garcia is slated to undergo season-ending surgery on his pitching shoulder Friday, to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. 


Joe Kelly activated from DL for Friday start

(3:10 pm ET) The Cardinals officially activated pitcher Joe Kelly from the disabled list Friday, after his recovery from a hamstring injury was completed.

Kelly has not pitched in the majors since suffering the injury in mid-April, but is set to start Friday against the Brewers. He finished his minor-league rehab assignment having allowed three runs in 10 1/3 innings for Triple-A Memphis.


Report: Geovany Soto arrested for misdemeanor

(3:05 pm ET) Rangers catcher Geovany Soto was arrested Wednesday night, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Soto was pulled over for speeding Wednesday evening, and was subsequently charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to the report. At this point, no other details are known.

Soto is working his way back from knee surgery, and is expected to return from the disabled list after the All-Star break. 


Evan Gattis cleared to begin swinging

(2:57 pm ET) Braves catcher Evan Gattis has been cleared to increase his activity at Class A Rome, though he is not yet ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Gattis, who is working his way back from a back injury, has been cleared only to begin swinging a bat. He will try to progress to batting practice in the next few days, and could begin a rehab assignment early next week if he avoids a setback.

It is not yet clear if Gattis is expected to return shortly after the All-Star break, but his rehab assignment could begin during it. 


Curtis Partch, Carlos Contreras called up from Triple-A

(2:39 pm ET) The Reds recalled pitchers Curtis Partch and Carlos Contreras from Triple-A Louisville Friday.

Contreras was sent down to Louisville Thursday, while Partch has not pitched with the Reds since he was sent down in May.
