by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(8:10 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Severino Gonzalez has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the team announced Sunday.

Gonzalez made his second start of the year Sunday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work. He is 1-1 with five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings this season.

3B Nolan Arenado connects for two homers in Rockies' loss on Sunday
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(7:42 pm ET) Nolan Arenado connected for two home runs off Padres starter James Shields on Sunday in the Rockies' loss on Sunday.

Arenado launched a solo homer in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the fifth.

He has now homered three times in his last three games, pushing his season total to six.

Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick smacked around for six runs in loss
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(7:39 pm ET) Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick (1-4) gave up six runs on six hits in five innings of work to take the loss in San Diego on Sunday.

Justin Upton knocked a two-run homer off Kendrick in the first inning and Derek Norris added another two-run shot of the right hander in the fourth.

Kendrick's start on Sunday was moved up a day in order to let rotation mate Tyler Matzek rest his hamstring.

Kendrick's next scheduled start is Saturday against the Dodgers.

Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran back in the lineup Sunday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(7:35 pm ET) Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran will return to the starting lineup Sunday against the Red Sox, batting sixth and playing right.

Beltran got the day off Saturday after struggling at the plate early on this season, according to NJ.com.

"I don't know if [when] you're that old, you press," manager Joe Girardi said. "Is there a difference between frustration and pressing? I don't know. I think there's frustration and maybe he's trying a little bit too hard, but I thought he was pretty relaxed the other day."

Beltran came through for New York Friday with a double and two RBI.

"A lot of it has to do with pitch selection," Girardi said. "Sometimes it can be a little bit mechanical. I think it was sometimes part of that early on...but I think that's probably corrected."

Padres starter James Shields gets win despite allowing five earned
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(7:34 pm ET) Padres starter James Shields (3-0) surrendered three home runs, giving up five runs overall, in 5 1/3 innings Sunday but was able to earn the win against the Rockies.

Shields was touched by Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado twice for homers.

Shields gave up nine hits and struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

The five runs was the most the right hander has allowed all season.

Shields will look to get back on track Friday in Arizona.

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura OK after another bean ball
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(7:18 pm ET) Brewers shortstop Jean Segura appears to be alright after taking a 95-mph fastball to the head in Sunday's game against the Cubs, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Segura left the game after the at-bat to be further evaluated. It was the second time this season Segura has been hit in the head.

"He's doing pretty good, but we're going to get him over to a doctor here to make sure that they see the same things our guys are seeing," manager Ron Roenicke said. "So we'll have him checked out here and then have a car for him to get back to Milwaukee tonight."

Roenicke hopes Segura is able to remain the same hitter at the plate after the second scare.

"Yeah, that's two in the helmet. That's not a good thing,” said Roenicke. "You hope a guy doesn't get a little tentative in what he's doing. He does such a nice job doing the things we ask that you hope it doesn't start to bother him."

Nori Aoki, Joe Panik deliver back-to-back first-inning homers for Giants
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(7:14 pm ET) Nori Aoki and Joe Panik delivered back-to-back home runs in the first inning Sunday in the Giants' victory over Jered Weaver and the Angels.

Neither Aoki and Panik had homered this season before hitting their back-to-back blasts.

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(7:11 pm ET) The Athletics have released outfielder Cody Ross after designating him for assignment on Saturday, according to MLB transactions.

Ross struggled in nine games for Oakland this season, posting a .091 average with three RBI in 22 at-bats.

Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal blows first save of the year
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(7:06 pm ET) Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal picked up his first blown save of 2015 on Sunday in St. Louis' 3-2 win over the Pirates in 14 innings.

Rosenthal came on in the ninth with a 2-1 lead that quickly vanished when Jung Ho Kang ripped the first pitch he saw over the center field wall to tie it up. Rosenthal went on to finish the inning with two strikeouts and kept his ERA at 1.42 in 12 2/3 innings of work.

Red Sox plan to use C Blake Swihart on regular basis
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(7:05 pm ET) Red Sox rookie catcher Blake Swihart is being thrown right into the fire after his recent call-up, as he was in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees with plans to keep the youngster behind the plate for the foreseeable future, per the Providence Journal

Manager John Farrell said that Swihart will get the bulk of the starts, with Sandy Leon taking over the backup role.

"We want to get to Blake in the flow of things as quickly as we can and yet recognizing and being a little bit sensitive when there may be a need for a breather," Farrell said.
