(6:12 pm ET) Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino will begin his minor-league rehab assignment on Saturday at Triple-A Pawtucket, the Boston Globe reports. Victorino is recovering from a right hamstring strain and remains hopeful of coming off the disabled list when eligible.

Lorenzo Cain placed on 15-day DL

(6:10 pm ET) As expected, the Royals placed outfielder Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list because of a groin strain on Thursday, the team announced. Cain was removed from Wednesday's contest with the injury. He is hitting .333 (14 for 42) with five RBI in 12 games.

Max Fried starts throwing from 150 feet

(6:07 pm ET) Padres starting pitcher prospect Max Fried has started throwing from a distance of 150 feet on Thursday, according to U-T San Diego. He'll likely start a bullpen session at some point next week and a minor-league rehab assignment at some point in early-to-mid May.

Michael Almanzar dealing with minor soreness

(6:03 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Michael Almanzar played third base Wednesday during an extended spring game, but experienced minor soreness, according to MASN Sports on Thursday.

Almanzar began his playing in simulated games on Tuesday, but has not suffered any setbacks, as he continues to work his way back from patellar tendinitis. He remains without a timetable for his return.

Edgmer Escalona may start of long tossing soon

Josh Johnson set for examination of 'everything' in arm

(5:59 pm ET) The first season with San Diego for right-hander Josh Johnson could be over before it even began. He will pay a visit to noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews next Tuesday for a "look at everything," Bud Black told the San Diego Union-Tribune. That includes his ligaments, forearm flexor and back of elbow.

The oft-injured Johnson lost half of the 2013 season to injury and has yet to throw a pitch for the Padres.


Nolan Reimold begins light baseball activities

(5:54 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold began light baseball activities by hitting off a tee in the team's spring training facility in Sarasota on Thursday, MASN Sports reports. Reimold is working his way back from season-ending neck surgery and remains without a timetable.

Ian Kinsler racks up season-high four RBI against Indians

(5:50 pm ET) Tigers second baseman and leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead with one swing of the bat Thursday against Indians right-hander Danny Salazar.

The three-run homer in the fifth inning put his team up to stay and allowed Justin Verlander to earn the victory. He added an RBI single in the sixth.

Kinsler has been consistent and productive since the opening bell. He has seven multi-hit games and boasts a slugging percentage of .519.


Manny Machado will play 3-5 extended spring games after Friday

(5:49 pm ET) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is scheduled to start sliding on Friday, the first time since having knee surgery, MASN Sports reports. He will then begin playing approximately 3-5 extended spring training games before starting a minor-league rehab assignment.

Machado already has 17 at-bats in simulated games during his recovery and is expected to need the full 20 days on his minor-league rehab assignment, according to the report.

Jeremy Jeffress elects free agency

(5:45 pm ET) Reliever Jeremy Jeffress did not accept an outright assignment from Toronto, electing to become a free agent, according to Yahoo! Sports on Thursday. Jeffress owned a 10.80 ERA over 3 1/3 innings pitched for Triple-A Buffalo.
