Jose Abreu back on field Wednesday for White Sox
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:02 pm ET) White Sox slugger Jose Abreu has recovered enough from a back ailment to return to the lineup Wednesday against Kansas City. He missed the game Tuesday night.

Abreu returns on a tear. He has hit safely in 30 of his last 31 games and has raised his average from .260 to .292 during that stretch. He leads the majors with 29 home runs.

Jeff Francoeur's promotion among Padres transactions
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:01 pm ET) The Padres are making some changes to their rosters throughout the organization, according to MLB.com. One of the bigger transactions will be promoting veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur from Triple-A El Paso to the major-league roster.

Outfield prospect Rymer Liriano is being promoted from Double-A San Antonio to El Paso, and outfielder Alex Dickerson will be promoted from Class A Eugene to San Antonio.

Jordan Zimmermann's poor outing due to long layoff
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:52 am ET) Nationals starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann blamed his struggles during a five-inning no-decision Tuesday at Colorado on the long layoff between starts and not the biceps injury he had been recovering from. Due to the All-Star break, Zimmermann went 11 days between starts.

"My command was way off," Zimmermann said, per The Washington Post. "I’m hoping it’s because of the days off. I was just missing over the middle. I’d get two strikes, and I’d miss over the middle, and it seemed to be a double or a triple every time. It was a battle tonight. I seemed to have my hands full every inning. I had to work extremely hard. I’m glad we got the win.

"It wasn’t the bicep. The bicep felt great. I was a little rusty, but I made it through it just fine. I feel I’ll be a lot better next time."

Anthony Rizzo remains on roll with two-homer game
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:49 am ET) A tremendous power display continued Tuesday night for Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who snagged the National League lead in home runs by adding two to his total.

Rizzo, who has 25 on the season, slugged solo blasts in the third and seventh innings. He has five home runs and six RBI in the last four games. He has also raised his batting average from .272 to .283 with 15 hits in his last 40 at-bats.

Neil Walker homers for third time in six games
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:46 am ET) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker homered for the third time in six games during a 12-7 win Tuesday against the Dodgers. Walker, who finished 2 for 4 with one double, one walk, two runs and three RBI, clubbed a solo home run off Josh Beckett in the second inning -- his 15th home run this season.

Walker is batting .344 with a .419 on-base percentage, .641 slugging percentage and 1.060 OPS in 18 July games. He also has one triple, four home runs, five doubles, 11 RBI, 16 runs, nine walks, 11 strikeouts and one stolen base in that span.

Jonathan Lucroy blasts off twice in defeat of Reds
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:42 am ET) Jonathan Lucroy continued to make his case as the premier-hitting catcher in the sport Tuesday with another impressive performance, this time against Cincinnati.

Lucroy blasted solo home runs in the sixth and ninth innings for the Brewers. The latter - his 11th of the season - was a walk-off. He now boasts a stat line of .310/.381/.500. The two-homer game was his second in the last five weeks.

Arismendy Alcantara clubs second career HR
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:38 am ET) Cubs rookie infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara hit his second career home run during a 6-0 win Tuesday against the Padres. Alcantara, who went 1 for 4 with a walk, hit a solo home run off Blaine Boyer in the seventh inning.

He is batting .282 with a .326 on-base percentage, .590 slugging percentage and .915 OPS in his first nine games with the Cubs. He also has one triple, two home runs, four doubles, seven RBI, 11 runs and three stolen bases.

Chris Carter having a pretty productive July
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:35 am ET) Astros DH Chris Carter doubled twice for the second straight game during a 3-2 win Tuesday at Oakland. He finished 3 for 5 with two RBI.

Carter has totaled six multi-hit games in July. He is batting .333 (18 for 54) with a .373 on-base percentage, .759 slugging percentage and 1.132 OPS in 14 games this month. He also has five doubles, six home runs, 13 RBI, 11 runs, three walks and 18 strikeouts.

Billy Butler out, Danny Valencia in Wednesday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:32 am ET) The Royals have benched designated hitter Billy Butler on Wednesday against the White Sox in favor of Danny Valencia. Butler continues to struggle, particularly in regard to his power numbers. He has just one home run since June 14 and three doubles since June 19. His .267/.320/.347 stat line pales in comparison to those he has compiled in previous seasons.

Eric Hosmer finds his way back into Wednesday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:27 am ET) Despite earlier reports to the contrary and an ailing hand, Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer has been placed in the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox.

Hosmer, who had been sidelined since getting hit in the hand by a Jon Lester pitch Sunday, has expressed concern about his ability to maximize his power potential at the plate.
