Butler received just 11 at-bats in the majors. He went hitless over those at-bats. He'll likely return when rosters expand in September.

Butler fanned four times in his first major league stint.


Will Middlebrooks sits Wednesday

Middlebrooks was pulled from Tuesday's game after beating out a single. He's officially day-to-day with a hamstring issue. Middlebrooks is hitting .188 over 117 at-bats. 


Justin Verlander says he's set to start Saturday

(4:25 pm ET) Tigers embattled right-hander Justin Verlander expects to start Saturday in Minnesota, though that is not set in stone, per MLive.com.

Verlander has been sidelined since Aug. 9 with shoulder soreness. He would return with a 10-11 mark, uncharacteristically high 4.76 ERA and just 118 strikeouts in 158 2/3 innings.

(4:25 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander said he's planning to start Saturday, according to mlive.com.

The move is not guaranteed yet, but Verlander is "penciled in" to make the start. Verlander has been sidelined since August 11 due to shoulder soreness. He'll take on the Twins if he can make the start.


Nick Swisher to miss the rest of the season due to knee surgery

(4:23 pm ET) Indians outfielder Nick Swisher will miss the rest of the season due to knee surgery, according to WTAM.

Swisher will have surgery on both his knees. He hit the disabled list August 10, and received a second opinion on his knee recently. Swisher hit .208/.278/.331 over 360 at-bats.


Alex Hassan moves up, Steven Wright goes down

(4:20 pm ET) The Red Sox have called up outfielder Alex Hassan and optioned Steven Wright to the minors, according to the Providence Journal.

With Mike Napoli and Will Middlebrooks unavailable, the team needed to add another hitter. Hassan has only received seven at-bats in the majors this season.

(4:16 pm ET) Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is dealing with back spasms, according to the Providence Journal

Napoli is not available for Wednesday's game due to the injury. The club called up Alex Hassan as a possible replacement. Napoli has not been placed on the disabled list, so there's a chance he's just day-to-day for now. 


Kurt Suzuki absent from Wednesday lineup

(4:05 pm ET) Scuffling Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki has been given the night off Wednesday with Cleveland in town. Eric Fryer is set to start instead.

Suzuki is hitless in nine at-bats over the last three games, but he still boasts a strong stat line of .302/.363/.395.


Elbow problem sidelines Carlos Beltran

(4:01 pm ET) The Yankees have scratched veteran outfielder Carlos Beltran from the Wednesday lineup against Houston with elbow pain. Joe Girardi has indicated that Beltran felt discomfort while swinging a bat Tuesday and could be out for a couple games.

Beltran, who is scheduled for an examination Wednesday, has been hitting like there's something wrong. He has just one hit in his last 28 at-bats to drop his average 18 points to .233.
