Edinson Volquez turns in complete game effort Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:28 pm ET) Pirates starter Edinson Volquez turned in a complete game Thurday against the Cardinals.

Volquez pitched nine innings, allowing one run on six hits. He gave up two walks and struck out five during the start. Volquez threw 114 pitches. The only time Volquez ran into trouble was the third inning. Kolten Wong singled and stole second to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved Wong to third, Matt Carpenter was able to hit a sacrifice fly.

Volquez nearly found himself in a rough situation the following inning, as he allowed two singles to open the fourth. He was able to work around the jam, and wasn't threatened by the Cardinals the rest of the game.

The win brings Volquez to 8-6 on the year. His next start will come shortly after the All-Star break.

Zach Britton works a scoreless frame for the save Thursday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:23 pm ET) Orioles closer Zach Britton worked his way past a hit in a scoreless ninth inning to secure a 4-3 win and the save Thursday night against the Nationals. Britton is 15 of 17 in save chances, with a 1.33 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP over 47 1/3 innings of relief this season.

Shelby Miller struggles with control Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:23 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller had a rough start Thursday against the Pirates.

Miller allowed four runs on five hits over five innings. He had issues with his command, walking four hitters. He struck out just one during the outing. After Russell Martin notched a run against Miller in the first, he seemed to settle in for a few innings. In the fifth, however, he ran into trouble. Miller walked two hitters early, and wouldn’t get out of the inning unscathed. With two outs, Andrew McCutchen singled in a run and Neil Walker doubled home two runs. Miller issued another walk before finally getting out of the inning. He threw 92 pitches during the start.

The loss dropped Miller to 7-8 on the year. His next start is undetermined at this point due to the upcoming All-Star Game.

Wei-Yin Chen picks up ninth win vs. Nationals
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:21 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen (9-3) fell one out shy of a quality start on Thursday, but still came away with the win against the Nationals. The right-hander permitted three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings of a 4-3 win.

Over his last two starts covering 11 2/3 innings, Chen has allowed five earned runs. He owns a 4.15 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP over 18 starts (104 innings). The date for his next start after the All-Star break remains uncertain.

Bartolo Colon can't come up with a win Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:09 pm ET) Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon lasted eight innings Thursday against the Braves.

Colon gave up three runs on 10 hits over eight innings. He did not issue a walk, and struck out seven during the appearance. The Braves did most of their damage early against Colon. After giving up a single to Andrelton Simmons, Colon allowed Freddie Freeman to belt an RBI double.  Two hitters later, Jason Heyward managed to drive Freeman home.

The third run came in the third inning, after two consecutive singles, Justin Upton grounded into a double-play, which would up scoring a run. Over the next five innings, Colon allowed just three hits.

The loss dropped Colon to 8-8 on the year. He’ll make his next start shortly after the All-Star break.

Aaron Harang picks up a win Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:08 pm ET) Braves pitcher Aaron Harang turned in a solid start Thursday against the Mets.

Harang allowed one run on four hits over seven innings of work. He walked four and struck out two during the outing. Harang only found himself in trouble twice during the game. After a single and a walk, Harang allowed David Wright to hit an RBI single in the third inning.

The following inning, Harang wound up loading the bases after giving up a single and walking two batters, but managed to escape without any damage. He threw 104 pitches during the start.

The win brings Harang to 9-6 on the year. He’ll make his next start shortly after the All-Star Game.

Jayson Werth clubs 10th home run Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:06 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth clubbed his 10th home run Thursday against the Orioles.

Werth only had one hit during the game, but made it count. Werth led off the top of the sixth inning against Wei-Yin Chen. Werth worked a three-pitch at-bat, homering on a 77 mph curveball. Werth finished 1 for 5, with one run scored and one RBI.

X-rays come back negative on Ian Desmond's hand
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:04 pm ET) Hand X-rays came back negative on Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond.

Desmond was removed from Thursday's game after being hit with a pitch. He attempted to remain in the game, but was taken out when a practice throw sailed on him while warming up to take the field. It's unclear how much time Desmond will miss due to the issue.

Grady Sizemore promoted Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:01 pm ET) Phillies outfielder Grady Sizemore has been called up to the majors Thursday.

Sizemore fared well in the minors, hitting .289 over 45 at-bats. He hit just .219/.288/.324 over 185 at-bats with Boston earlier this season.

David Buchanan heading to Triple-A Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9:58 pm ET) Phillies pitcher David Buchanan has been optioned to the minors Thursday.

Buchanan tossed a strong start against the Brewers Thursday, but Cliff Lee is nearing a return. The team won't need a fifth starter until Lee can come back, making Buchanan expendable. He posted a 4.40 ERA over ten starts in the majors.
