Brewers' Ryan Braun dealing with minor hamstring tightness

(2:47 pm ET) Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Wednesday outfielder Ryan Braun has slight hamstring tightness, but Roenicke added it is nothing major, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. However, he was not in the spring lineup against the Cubs.

Braun is batting .333 (11 for 33) with two home runs, three doubles, seven RBI, seven runs, six walks and nine strikeouts in 14 spring games.


Astros prospect Kyle Smith undergoes Tommy John surgery

(2:47 pm ET) Astros pitching prospect Kyle Smith underwent Tommy John surgery, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Smith, who was a Texas League All-Star in 2014, posted a 9-5 record with a 3.95 ERA and 127 strikeouts with two different minor league clubs last year.


Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson will throw bullpen on Thursday

(2:46 pm ET) Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson had his bullpen session pushed back to Thursday, and remains scheduled to start the team's spring finale on Saturday, according to the Star Tribune. Gibson was scratched Monday due to flu-like symptoms. He owns a 2.75 ERA over 19 2/3 innings of work this spring.

Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle to throw long toss Thursday

(2:39 pm ET) Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle continues to progress through his rehab and it will continue Thursday when the closer is scheduled to throw long toss out to 75 feet, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Doolittle, who tore his rotator cuff late in January, still remains without a timetable for his return to the field and has thrown a few times this spring. He went 2-4 last season with 22 saves in 62 2/3 innings.


Braves claim Andrew McKirahan off waivers from Marlins

(2:31 pm ET) The Braves claimed pitcher Andrew McKirahan off waivers from the Marlins on Wednesday. The Marlins originally selected McKirahan from the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft in December.

Jordan Lyles picked to start second game of season for Rockies

(2:29 pm ET) Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Wednesday starting pitcher Jordan Lyles will start the second game of the season on April 7 at Milwaukee, per MLB.com. 

Lyles has had a solid spring, going 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA in six spring starts. He also has 13 strikeouts and seven walks in 21 innings.


Report: Rangers decide on starting rotation to begin season

(2:22 pm ET) The Rangers reportedly believe they have their starting rotation set for the beginning of the season, reports the Dallas Morning News.

The rotation will go Yovani Gallardo, Colby Lewis, Ross Detwiler, Nick Martinez, and Derek Holland.

Detwiler and Martinez will have beat out Nick Tepesch, Ross Ohlendorf, Anthony Ranaudo, Lisalverto Bonilla and Anthony Bass for two open spots in the starting rotation this spring.

 Martinez posted a 4.20 ERA in four appearances this spring with 11 strikeouts. Detwiler posted a 4.15 ERA with eight strikeouts in three appearances this spring.


Cubs' Maddon: Jon Lester might throw 100-plus pitches in opener

(2:22 pm ET) Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday starting pitcher Jon Lester (arm) might throw 100 or more pitches in the season opener Sunday against the Cardinals, but it depends on the stress level of the outing, per ESPN.

Lester, who has been dealing with arm fatigue since March 20, threw 84 pitches in a minor-league outing Tuesday.


Rockies' Butler feeling better, attempting long-toss Wednesday

(1:55 pm ET) Rockies starting pitcher Eddie Butler is feeling better Wednesday after leaving Monday's spring start with shoulder fatigue, per MLB.com. He will attempt long-toss Wednesday.

Manager Walt Weiss said Wednesday that Butler is still in the running to be part of the Opening Day rotation, if he rebounds quickly from this injury.


Cubs option Lake, Schlitter and Rosscup to Triple-A
