Edward Mujica to start season as Red Sox closer
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(1:43 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Edward Mujica will start the season in the closer role, manager John Farrell confirmed on Sunday.

With Koji Uehara unlikely to be ready to start the year, Farrell said Mujica would get first shot at closing.

"There’s been times where he’s thrown a ball down and away to right-handers with good stuff," Farrell said, per WEEI. "Right now, he would be the guy that we turn to in closing situations. I will also say that we would look to matchup in the ninth inning as well. We’ll look to exploit the best matchup, and that could be any one of three or four guys down there to finish a game."

Mariners option Roenis Elias, reassign eight to minor-league camp
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:38 pm ET) The Mariners have optioned pitcher Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma, the team announced Sunday.

An earlier report Sunday said that the team was considering going with a six-man rotation, and it's possible that could still come to pass, with Elias making frequent trips to and from the active roster. For now, it appears Taijuan Walker will serve as the team's fifth starter.

The Mariners also reassigned the following eight players to minor-league camp Sunday: catcher John Baker, outfielder Endy Chavez, infielders Shawn O'Malley and Carlos Rivero and pitchers Mark Lowe, Jordan Pries, Kevin Correia and Joe Saunders .

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(1:36 pm ET) 40-year-old pitcher Jamey Wright has been informed by the Rangers that he won't make the club.

Wright had an out in his contract, requiring the team to give him advance notice.

“If they change their minds, I’m still here,” Wright said, per the Dallas Morning News. “But, if not, I’m showcasing for all the other teams.”

He had a 9.64 ERA in eight appearances this spring.

Ryan Rua, Delino DeShields big winners in Rangers OF battle
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(1:33 pm ET) The Rangers' roster is taking shape, and the big winners appear to be Ryan Rua and Delino DeShields Jr.

Rua will most likely be the starting left fielder for the Rangers, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Rua wrapped up the job by hitting .306 with eight RBI this spring.

Jake Smolinski will be the fourth outfielder. He hit .333 with five RBI. DeShields will win the last roster spot. DeShields hit .235. As a Rule V draft pick, he needs to stay on the Major League roster, or the team risks losing him.

The odd man out will be Carlos Peguero , despite hitting .333.
