Duda was the only bright spot against Matt Garza Thursday. In the seventh inning, he worked a five-pitch at-bat against Garza, homering on a 93 mph fastball. Duda finished 1 for 3, with one run scored and one RBI.

Corey Kluber toys with perfection
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:06 am ET) Indians pitcher Corey Kluber flirted with perfection on Thursday against the Royals, but failed to factor into the decision despite another dominant outing.

Kluber allowed a single to Omar Infante in the seventh inning to end his perfect game bid. It was his longest career no-hit bid. His previous high was 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander yielded one unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out 10 in an extra-inning affair. Of his 107 pitches, 73 were strikes.

Over his last six starts covering 45 2/3 innings, Kluber has allowed eight earned runs. He owns a 2.77 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 22 starts (149 1/3 innings). His next start will come Wednesday at home against Seattle.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Davis stepped to the plate in the sixth inning, and homered on the first pitch he saw from Daisuke Matsuzaka. Davis walked and doubled earlier in the contest. He finished 2 for 3, with two runs scored and two RBI.

Ryan Braun hits 14th home run
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2014) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hit his 14th home run Thursday against the Mets.

Braun waited until the seventh inning to strike. He worked a two-pitch at-bat against Daisuke Matsuzaka, driving a 76 mph slider out to left for a two-run shot. Braun finished 1 for 4, with one run scored and two RBI.

Tyson Ross dominant in Chicago Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2014) Padres pitcher Tyson Ross struck out 11 hitters Thursday against the Cubs.

Ross allowed one run on five hits over six innings of work. He struck out 11 and walked just one. Ross threw 104 pitches during the outing. Ross walked a batter in the second inning, and allowed his first hit of the ballgame in the third. The only time Ross ran into trouble was the fourth inning. Ross allowed three singles during the inning, including a run-scoring single to Luis Valbuena.

With the win, Ross improved to 9-10 on the year. His next start will come against the Cardinals.

Jonathan Lucroy hits 12th home run Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2014) Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy belted his 12th home run Thursday against the Mets.

Lucroy wasted no time getting to work. In his first at-bat, Lucroy blasted an 89 mph cutter out to left field for a solo shot. He would also single in a run later in the game. Lucroy finished 2 for 4, with one run scored and two RBI.

X-rays come back negative for Phil Hughes
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2014) Twins pitcher Phil Hughes underwent X-rays on his injured shin, which came back negative, according to MLB.com.

Hughes left Thursday's start against the White Sox after taking an Adam Dunn liner off the leg in the fourth inning. Manager Ron Gardenhire remains hopeful that Hughes will make his next start on Wednesday at Kansas City.

Jake Petricka Ks two, closes out Twins
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Yankees showing interest in Ian Kennedy
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/24/2014) The Yankees have shown interest in Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Despite the interest, no deal is imminent. The Yankees are said to be interested in acquiring a starting pitcher, so the club naturally has interest in Kennedy. The one-time Yankees prospect has flourished in San Diego this season, posting a 3.66 ERA over 135 1/3 innings.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
