Athletics' Sam Fuld to use face protection device
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4:06 pm ET) Athletics' outfielder Sam Fuld will begin using a device to protect his face at the plate. Fuld took batting practice wearing an attachment for his batting helmet that protects the left side of his face, per SFGate.

Fuld suffered an injured jaw after being hit by a throw while running the bases.

Fuld returned to the lineup on Tuesday but initially declined to use the device. He tried it on Sunday after veering away from a throw while running to first in Saturday's game.

Phillies' Chase Utley homers twice Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4:05 pm ET) Phillies second baseman Chase Utley went 2 for 2 with a walk and two home runs in Sunday's 4-4 tie with the Tigers.

Utley has been dealing with an ankle sprain this spring but has looked excellent at the plate, going 9 for 24 heading into Sunday's game before smacking his first two home runs of Grapefruit League play.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4:03 pm ET) Mariners outfield prospect Alex Jackson was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to minor shoulder soreness, MLB.com reports. Jackson is 2 for 9 with one home run this spring.

Joe Benson has good chance to make Braves' roster
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4:00 pm ET) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said that outfielder Joe Benson has a good shot to make the team's Opening Day roster.

Gonzalez praised Benson's "energy and passion", per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"We are looking for a right-handed outfielder that can play a little bit of center, and he comes over and he keeps doing something good," Gonzalez said. “I got on the phone yesterday with (assistant GM John Coppolella) and said 'I’d like to see Benson more.' It doesn’t cost us anything, and you can bring him back and forth anytime we want. So Benson’s here and we get a chance to play him."

Brady Feigl 'in the mix' to make Braves' roster
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3:56 pm ET) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said that LHP Brady Feigl has a good chance to make the roster.

Feigl has a 1.35 ERA in seven appearances this spring. He was sent to minor league camp but has been brought back up to make three starts.

"We send them down for whatever reason," Gonzalez said, per the Journal-Constitution. "And then the (Braves coaches) are going, ‘Wait a second, I remember Feigl, when he was here, he pitched better than the guy who is here. Let’s bring him (back)."

Feigl has never appeared above Single-A, but Gonzalez said he was "in the mix" to win a job.

Mets' Dillon Gee tosses seven innings in Sunday's spring win
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:56 pm ET) Mets pitcher Dillon Gee surrendered two earned runs on seven hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out three in his team's 3-2 win over the Cardinals Sunday.

Gee is slated to open the season in the rotation after an offseason filled with trade rumors and the projection of a relief role. He's posted a 2.49 ERA in 21 2/3 innings while recording eight strikeouts and eight walks.

Cardinals' Marco Gonzales allows one run vs. Mets Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:53 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Marco Gonzales gave up one earned run on three hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings while striking out two in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Mets.

Gonzales is making a statement in the competition for the fifth-starter role in St. Louis, and it's a battle he might win with Jaime Garcia dealing with arm fatigue. Gonzales has posted a 1.04 ERA in 17 1/3 spring innings but has also walked seven batters while striking out nine.

Red Sox considering Swihart, haven't asked Jays about Navarro
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:45 pm ET) The Red Sox will give catching prospect Blake Swihart an extended look over the final week of spring training to determine whether to give him a spot on the Opening Day roster, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

Christian Vazquez was projected to be the team's starting catcher coming into spring training but is dealing with an elbow injury that may require Tommy John surgery. Despite the need at the catcher position, the Red Sox have not yet called the Blue Jays to inquire about No. 2 catcher Dioner Navarro, who has asked to be traded and is carrying a $5-million salary for 2015.

Rays release Andrew Toles
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3:42 pm ET) The Rays released outfielder Andrew Toles on Sunday, per the Tampa Bay Times. Toles was the team's third-round pick in the 2012 draft and their 2013 minor league player of the year.

Toles missed two months last year due to personal reasons. He's never moved higher than A-ball in the Rays' organization.

Cardinals' Jaime Garcia not expected to make Opening Day roster
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:39 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia is not expected to be on the team's Opening Day roster while dealing with arm fatigue, MLB.com reports. Garcia indicated Sunday he's been feeling fatigue and soreness in his arm the last few days.

"I wasn't able to recover," Garcia said. "Things weren't getting any better [Saturday], the day before my start. I think it's just a matter of still recovering. Maybe it got to the point where it was a little too much for my body this early. Now, we just back off a little bit or take a couple days off, whatever decision they're going to make."

Garcia is expected to remain in Florida for extended spring training and build his arm back up during a rehab assignment while on the disabled list.
