Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal blows first save of the year

(7:06 pm ET) Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal picked up his first blown save of 2015 on Sunday in St. Louis' 3-2 win over the Pirates in 14 innings. 

Rosenthal came on in the ninth with a 2-1 lead that quickly vanished when Jung Ho Kang ripped the first pitch he saw over the center field wall to tie it up. Rosenthal went on to finish the inning with two strikeouts and kept his ERA at 1.42 in 12 2/3 innings of work.


Red Sox plan to use C Blake Swihart on regular basis

(7:05 pm ET) Red Sox rookie catcher Blake Swihart is being thrown right into the fire after his recent call-up, as he was in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees with plans to keep the youngster behind the plate for the foreseeable future, per the Providence Journal

Manager John Farrell said that Swihart will get the bulk of the starts, with Sandy Leon taking over the backup role. 

"We want to get to Blake in the flow of things as quickly as we can and yet recognizing and being a little bit sensitive when there may be a need for a breather," Farrell said. 


Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver falls to 0-4 on Sunday

(6:58 pm ET) Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver (0-4) yielded consecutive home runs in the first inning on Sunday and never recovered, giving up five runs, overall, on 10 hits in five innings for a loss in San Francisco. 

Nori Aoki and Joe Panik delivered the back-to-back blows for the Giants.

Weaver's fastball stayed around 83-84 mph all game and remains winless after six starts this season. 

Weaver will seek his first win of 2015 on Friday against the Astros.


Pirates' Jung Ho Kang blasts off for first MLB home run

(6:55 pm ET) Pirates shortstop Jung Ho Kang went 2 for 5 at the plate in Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in 14 innings on Sunday. 

Kang did his damage in the ninth inning, taking the first pitch he saw from Trevor Rosenthal over the center field wall for a solo home run, his first in the majors, to tie the game. Kang is now hitting .281 with seven RBI in 32 at-bats this season.


Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo struggles in defeat

(6:55 pm ET) Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo wasn't sharp Sunday against the Athletics and wound up on the wrong side of a 7-1 defeat, his fourth loss of the season. 

Gallardo (2-4) went 6 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, three of them earned. He struggled to find the plate, walking four, which inflated his pitch count to 118 before he was pulled. 

Gallardo has lost three straight decisions and seen his ERA rise to 4.05. 


Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez blasts fifth home run of 2015

(6:53 pm ET) Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez went 1 for 2 at the plate with four walks in Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in 14 innings on Sunday.

Alvarez did his damage in the 12th inning when he took a Samuel Tuivailala pitch over the right field wall for a solo shot, his fifth of the season. Alvarez is now hitting .227 with 12 RBI in 75 at-bats this year.


Athletics P Sonny Gray strikes out 10 to improve to 4-0

(6:51 pm ET) Athletics starter Sonny Gray continued his strong start to the 2015 season, striking out 10 batters to lead Oakland to a 7-1 triumph over the Rangers on Sunday. 

Gray moved to 4-0 on the year with relative ease, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing just two hits. He did battle with wildness, however, walking seven batters, which raised his pitch total to 119. 

Gray lowered his ERA on the season to 1.67, which is good for sixth in the AL, and his four wins are tied for the top spot in the league. 


Cardinals' Kolten Wong smacks walk-off home run Sunday

(6:50 pm ET) Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong went 3 for 4 at the plate in St. Louis' 3-2 win over the Pirates in 14 innings on Sunday.

Wong stepped in the box in the 14th after going 2 for 3 to start the game. Wong then lifted a 1-1 pitch from Radhames Liz over the right field wall for a solo home run to win the game, his second of the season.

Wong boosted his average to .294 with eight RBI in 85 at-bats this season.


Giants SP Tim Lincecum throws eight shutout innings for win on Sunday

(6:49 pm ET) Giants starter Tim Lincecum (2-2) went eight strong innings on Sunday, scattering three hits while not allowing a run in the Giants' victory over the Angels.

All three hits off Lincecum were singles.

With the performance, Lincecum lowered his ERA from 3.27 to 2.40.

Lincecum also collected two singles at the plate.

Lincecum's next start is scheduled for Friday against the Marlins.

Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter cracks fourth home run

(6:47 pm ET) Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter went 1 for 3 at the plate in St. Louis' 3-2 win over the Pirates in 14 innings on Sunday.

Carpenter did his damage in the fourth inning when he took a Vance Worley pitch out of the park for a solo shot, his fourth of the season. Carpenter, who also struck out twice, boosted his average to .365 with 16 RBI in 96 at-bats this season.
