Ruben Tejada silences critics for at least one day
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:40 am ET) Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada returned to the starting lineup during Wednesday's 11-2 win against the Phillies, and for one day at least quieted the speculation he might get supplanted at shortstop by Wilmer Flores.

Tejada went 3 for 4 with one run, one RBI and one walk in the win. He entered the game mired in a 4-for-38 slump in his previous 14 games.

Ankle problem leads to knee issue for Carlos Gonzalez
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:32 am ET) An ankle injury sustained in a home accident on Saturday is taking a toll on the knee of struggling Rockies star Carlos Gonzalez, the Denver Post has reported.

"I'm hanging in there," Gonzalez said. "My ankle is getting a little better each day. But now that my right ankle hurts, I'm favoring it and I'm putting pressure on my left knee. I'm trying to avoid that pain on my ankle."

Gonzalez, who sat out Wednesday, is dealing with tendinitis in the knee. He's also dealing with a slump at the plate that has lowered his batting average to .243 and on-base percentage to .294. He has 64 strikeouts and just 17 walks on the season in 243 at-bats. Gonzalez has six hits in his last 38 at-bats without a multi-hit game since before the All-Star break.

Mark Appel tosses five scoreless innings in Double-A debut
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:31 am ET) Astros starting pitcher prospect Mark Appel shined in his debut for Double-A Corpus Christi Wednesday. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft tossed five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks, while recording four strikeouts.

"I thought it was a good outing," Astros senior pitching advisor Doug Brocail, who's serving as interim pitching coach at Corpus Christi, told MLB.com. "He went out and stuck with the game plan. He has some work to do, but he threw up five zeroes. I'll take zeros any way we can get them."

Ian Kennedy ready to roll for Saturday start
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:17 am ET) Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy threw on the side Wednesday after missing a start due to an oblique strain, per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Kennedy is all but set to start Saturday against Atlanta. He will try to bounce back from two mediocre outings in which he yielded seven earned runs in 11 innings pitched.

Athletics acquire Jon Lester for Yoenis Cespedes
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9:57 am ET) The Athletics have acquired the premiere starting pitcher on the trade market ahead of Thursday's deadline, as CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman has confirmed a trade involving Jon Lester moving to Oakland in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes.

WEEI.com reported the details of the deal first, which will likely also involves the Red Sox sending outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Athletics as well. The Red Sox will also receive a competitive balance draft pick, while the A's will receive cash from the Red Sox, according to Yahoo.com.

Heyman: Athletics appear to have deal for Lester
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9:48 am ET) According to numerous media reports, the Red Sox have agreed to a trade of pitcher Jon Lester Thursday morning, and CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports it appears the Athletics are considered the most likely outcome.

Further details are not yet known, but will surely come in shortly.

David Hale takes loss Wednesday vs. Dodgers
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:47 am ET) Braves pitcher David Hale was stuck with a loss Wednesday, giving up one earned run on three hits in one-plus innings in his team's 3-2 defeat against the Dodgers.

Hale (3-3) gave up a two-out single in the ninth inning but was able to escape the frame unscatched. He then surrendered a leadoff single in the 10th and watched the runner move into scoring position on a wild pitch. The next batter delivered a walkoff single to end the game. Hale owns a 2.76 ERA and 31:26 K:BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings.

J.P. Howell picks up win Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:45 am ET) Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell walked two batters and struck out one while tossing a scoreless inning and earning a win in his team's 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Braves.

Howell (3-3) had issued just one walk in July coming into Wednesday, though it came one day earlier. He was able to work around his free passes to deliver a scoreless 10th inning before his team picked up a walkoff win in the bottom half of the inning. Howell owns a 1.22 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB ratio in 37 1/3 innings.

Alex Wood strikes out eight vs. Dodgers Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:41 am ET) Braves pitcher Alex Wood didn't factor into Wednesday's decision after giving up one earned run on six hits and two walks in seven innings and striking out eight in his team's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Wood surrendered a solo home run in the second to tie the game 1-1, and it turned into a pitchers' duel after that. It was an excellent rebound effort after giving up 12 hits and five runs in his last outing. Wood owns a 3.30 ERA and 102:26 K:BB ratio in 103 2.3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mariners Tuesday.

Zack Greinke strikes out 13 in no-decision vs. Braves
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1:41 am ET) Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, giving up one earned run on five hits and one walk and striking out a season-high 13 batters in his team's 3-2 win over the Braves.

Greinke tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out 10 in his last start, and he kept on rolling Wednesday, with his only damage coming on an infield single in the second inning. He owns a 2.65 ERA and 153:29 K:BB ratio in 139 1/3 innings. Greinke is slated to face the Angels Monday.
