Twins catcher Josmil Pinto catches in minor-league game Monday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:10 pm ET) Twins catcher Josmil Pinto (concussion) caught three innings in a minor-league game Monday. He went 0 for 1 with two walks. He plans to catch in another minor-league game Tuesday, per the Pioneer Press.

Mets' Duda connects for HR, totals five RBI in spring game Monday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:05 pm ET) Mets first baseman Lucas Duda is in negotiations with the team regarding a multiyear contract, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirmed Monday. Well, Duda showed Monday against the Marlins why he is deserving of a new deal.

Duda totaled five RBI in a 7-1 win against the Marlins. He hit a two-run homer off Dan Haren in the fourth inning and a three-run double off Haren in the sixth inning. Duda is batting .262 (11 for 42) with three home runs and 10 RBI in 13 spring games.

Nats trade P Jerry Blevins to Mets for OF Matt den Dekker
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3:58 pm ET) The Nationals acquired outfielder Matt den Dekker from the Mets in exchange for pitcher Jerry Blevins, the organization announced on Monday

Den Dekker adds depth to a Nationals position group that could begin the season without both Denard Span and Jayson Werth. In 80 career major-league games, den Dekker has posted a .238/.325/.310 slash line.

Den Dekker told ESPN that when he was called into the Mets' office he figured he was being sent to the minors. With Washington, he'll have an early shot at playing time.

Blevins spent just one season with the Nationals in 2014 and went 2-3 with a 4.87 ERA in 57.1 innings pitched.

Rays' Cobb, Smyly, Colome progressing towards return
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:57 pm ET) Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday he's pleased with the progress of injured starting pitchers Alex Cobb (forearm), Drew Smyly (shoulder) and Alex Colome (illness), MLB.com reports.

"Especially [with] Colome," Cash said. "His wasn't an arm issue. Just putting weight back on. He just had a two-week delay there. But from all reports, when you ask them how's it going, there hasn't been anything given why we wouldn't be optimistic."

Smyly threw a bullpen session Sunday and is scheduled to face hitters in a batting-practice session Wednesday. After following that with another batting-practice session, he could progress to minor-league games and would need to get stretched out and ready for the regular season.

"Depending on need," Cash said. "If he got up to 75 pitches, does that help us? Or do we want to build him up to 105? We'd have to talk to him about that."

Cash added that there's a chance Smyly could rejoin the rotation by the end of April.

Colome threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Saturday and is set to throw 50 pitches Tuesday. Cobb played catch Monday for the second time and said all went well.

Unknown if Cubs OF Chris Denorfia will be ready for Opening Day
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3:52 pm ET) Cubs outfielder Chris Denorfia took batting practice Monday, though his status for Opening Day is still in question.

Denorfia has a sore left hamstring he's recovering from and is expected to participate in a minor-league game mid-week. However, there's still a chance he's not ready to be with the Cubs when the regular season starts.

"I don’t like to speculate on things like that,” Denorfia said, via MLB.com. “When you’re rehabbing anything can happen. As long as everything progresses the way it should, [I should be ready] sometime around that time. The goal is to be ready by then.”

Rafael Montero making a strong case to be part of Mets rotation
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:52 pm ET) Mets pitcher Rafael Montero showed Monday against the Marlins why some within the organization want him to replace Zack Wheeler in the rotation rather than Dillon Gee. Montero threw six scoreless innings during a 7-1 win against the Marlins.

Montero retired the first nine batters he faced before Dee Gordon led off the fourth inning with a double. Michael Morse also had a two-out single in the inning, but those were the only hits Montero would allow.

He didn't issue a walk and struck out six. Montero is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA through four spring outings. Although, in his two starts, he has allowed just one run on five hits in 10 innings.

Marlins' Dan Haren struggles in final Grapefruit League start
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:47 pm ET) Marlins starting pitcher Dan Haren struggled in his final Grapefruit League start Monday against the Mets. The veteran right-handed pitcher allowed seven runs on six hits and one walk during a 7-1 loss. He struck out four in 5 1/3 innings.

Haren (1-2) matched zeroes with Rafael Montero until Lucas Duda broke a scoreless game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Mets then added five more runs in the sixth inning on a three-run double from Duda and a two-run homer from Michael Cuddyer.

Haren, who came into the game with a 1.93 ERA, saw his ERA rise to 4.66 in five spring starts. He has 14 strikeouts and three walks in 19 1/3 innings.

Orioles hoping SS J.J. Hardy (shoulder) returns by Friday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:47 pm ET) Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Monday that he'd like to see shortstop J.J. Hardy (shoulder) back in the lineup no later than Friday, MLB.com reports.

"Friday at the latest," Showalter said. "Figure a couple days to quiet down from this, Thursday being a work day and then Friday. He could play two games. Let's just get the report first, [but two games is] enough. He'll get a game or two under his belt. He was having as good a spring as you could possibly have."

Hardy is awating the results of Monday's enhanced MRI. He injured his shoulder diving for a ground ball Friday.

White Sox to start pitcher Carlos Rodon at Triple-A Charlotte
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3:37 pm ET) The White Sox will start pitcher Carlos Rodon at Triple-A Charlotte this season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times

Rodon had a solid spring, striking out 19 batters, walking three and recording a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. The third overall pick in the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft, Rodon posted a 2.96 ERA in 24.1 innings with three teams in the minors a year ago.

“Whatever it is they need me to do and whatever it is they want to see so I can be in a position to pitch for them, so be it,” Rodon told the Sun-Times. “If I have to wear my underwear inside out, I’ll do it. I just want to help this team win.

“I’m going to be up there eventually. Just being comfortable with the opponents and my teammates [was valuable]. It was just an overall fun experience.”

Yankees' Cashman on Betances: 'Arm strength is not the issue'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3:37 pm ET) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman addressed a report that the fastball of pitcher Dellin Betances lacks velocity Monday, calling the reports inaccurate, The Journal News reports.

"The Betances 'Where has his velocity gone?' story is not accurate," Cashman said. "He’s actually averaging a mile (per hour) higher at this time this spring than last spring. If it’s apples to apples, then he’s right where he was last year. Obviously his performance in the spring is different than the arm strength, but the arm strength is not the issue. Just want to make sure everybody knows that."

Cashman has struggled this spring, giving up five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, and he hasn't held the opposition scoreless in any of his last five appearances. However, he remains in the mix for a late-inning role.

"You just want to make sure it doesn’t affect the confidence," Cashman said. "I’ve been able to at least confirm for myself that he’s very confident, which is good. Spring training is spring training and sample sizes are small. I thought he was much better (in a minor league game on Saturday)."
