Ian Desmond exits game with hand injury
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9:48 pm ET) Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond was forced out of Thursday's game against the Orioles with a hand injury.

Desmond was hit by a pitch in the hand in the eighth inning, tried to stay in the game, but left after taking warmups at short. He was replaced by Danny Espinosa.

Desmond finished 1 for 3 with an RBI double in the sixth inning. He owns a .241/.293/.429 slash line with 16 homers and 55 RBI in 345 at-bats. His status remains uncertain for Friday's series opener at Philadelphia.

Derek Holland hasn't been informed when he'll begin a rehab assignment
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9:15 pm ET) Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland (knee) has not been informed when he'll begin a minor-league rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

"I haven't heard anything, but the only thing I don't want happen is I'm out there for just two innings and 35 pitches," Holland said. "That better not happen. I have been throwing 80-pitch bullpens."

Masahiro Tanaka to miss at least six weeks with partially torn UCL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9:12 pm ET) After visiting three different doctors, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters that pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has been diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm, the New York Daily News reports.

Tanaka is expected to receive a PRP injection Monday and has been recommended throwing program. Although Tommy John surgery has not been ruled out, Cashman expects Tanaka to be back in six weeks, if the rehab program is effective.

"That's our hope. Obviously timeframes are subject to change," Cashman said.

Cliff Lee to be transferred to the 60-day disabled list
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:41 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee will be transferred to the 60-day disabled list, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lee is eligible to come off the DL July 18, and is expected to pitch July 19, so the move is just temporary so that the team can put another player on the 40-man roster. Lee is currently rehabbing after an elbow injury. He posted a 3.18 ERA over 68 innings prior to the injury.

Jimmy Nelson gets the call Thursday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:35 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson has been called up Thursday.

Nelson will take the roster spot of Wei-Chung Wang, who hit the disabled list. It's unclear whether Nelson will pitch out of the rotation or the bullpen. Nelson has been rumored to be a candidate to replace Marco Estrada in the team's rotation, but they haven't announced the move yet. Nelson has a 1.46 ERA over 111 innings in Triple-A.

Wei-Chung Wang hits disabled list with shoulder issue
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:21 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Wei-Chung Wang has been placed on the disabled list due to shoulder tightness.

Wang has struggled this season, posting an 11.12 ERA over 17 innings. He gave up two earned runs over one inning of work Thursday, which likely led to his placement on the disabled list.

Joe Mauer unlikely to return immediately after the break
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:00 pm ET) Twins first baseman Joe Mauer is unlikely to return immediately after the All-Star break, according to MLB.com.

Mauer is sidelined with an oblique injury, and there's a sense he could need some rehab games before he's ready to return. Mauer doesn't have an exact timetable for a return just yet. He's hitting .271/.342/.353 over 303 at-bats.
