Rays remove RP Preston Guilmet from 40-man roster
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:24 am ET) In order to activate DH John Jaso from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday, the Rays needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. To make that happen, the team opted to designate reliever Preston Guilmet for assignment.

Guilmet was optioned to the minors Thursday. He has made three relief appearances for Tampa Bay this season, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He also has five strikeouts.

Rays activate DH John Jaso from 60-day DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:20 am ET) Rays DH John Jaso was activated off the 60-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals. He has been sidelined since early April due to a wrist contusion.

Jaso spent eight games on a rehab assignment with Class A Charlotte and Triple-A Durham. He hit .250 (7 for 28) with one RBI, two doubles, two walks, three runs and four strikeouts.

Jaso played in five games at DH, two games in left field and one game at first base during his rehab assignment.

Phillies 1B Ryan Howard halts slump with blast Monday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:13 am ET) Any kind of hits have been hard to come by for Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard lately, but he certainly came up with a big one - at least at the time - Monday night against the host Dodgers.

Howard smashed a three-run homer to right-center in the third inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. He also fanned twice in the game.

That it was his lone hit is no surprise. Howard is batting .100 (3-for-30) over his last 10 games as his average has plunged to .218.

Rays RF Steven Souza lands on DL due to finger laceration
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:12 am ET) With the All-Star break right around the corner, the Rays opted to place starting right fielder Steven Souza on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday due to a finger laceration. The move is retroactive to July 6.

Souza could probably benefit from the time off, as he heads to the disabled list mired in a 2-for-31 slump in his last 11 games (eight starts). He has 18 strikeouts in that span.

White Sox RP Matt Albers continues to put up zeroes in rehab
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:04 am ET) White Sox veteran reliever Matt Albers has continued his encouraging work in his rehab stint at Triple-A Charlotte, throwing another scoreless inning, per CSN Chicago. He has allowed just one run in seven innings pitched as he recovers from a broken finger.

Albers has been out for nearly two-and-a-half months after sustaining the injury in a brawl with the Tigers. He has pitched in just four major league games this season.

Athletics recall OF Jake Smolinski, option pitcher Chris Bassitt
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:00 am ET) The Athletics recalled outfielder Jake Smolinski from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. To clear a roster spot, pitcher Chris Bassitt was optioned to Nashville.

Royals opt to rest Salvador Perez for first game of doubleheader
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:54 am ET) Since it was unlikely Royals catcher Salvador Perez was going to catch both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rays after Monday's game was rained out, manager Ned Yost made the decision to rest his starting catcher during the first game of the doubleheader.

Drew Butera, who also started Sunday for Kansas City, was behind the plate for the doubleheader opener.

Perez has started behind the plate in 71 of the Royals' 80 games. Unfortunately, Perez has been mired in an offensive slump for a few weeks, batting .164 in his last 16 games.

Royals CF Lorenzo Cain still out for Game 1 of doubleheader
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:50 am ET) Although Monday's game against the Rays was postponed due to rain, it still wasn't enough time for Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain to recover from a hamstring injury. He remained absent from the starting lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, as Paulo Orlando started in center field.

Cubs 2B Addison Russell won't start both games of doubleheader
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:45 am ET) The Cubs chose to give rookie second baseman Addison Russell a breather during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, opting to go with Jonathan Herrera at second base.

Russell continues to have his issues at the plate. He has opened July mired in a 1-for-17 slump in his first six games. Although, his hitting slump has extended from mid-June, as he is batting .125 in his last 18 games.

Phillies GM: Aaron Nola 'close' to major-league promotion
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:35 am ET) With the Phillies rotation continuing to struggle, MLB.com beat writer Todd Zolecki wrote Monday that "it would not be a surprise" to see starting pitcher prospect Aaron Nola in the majors by the end of July.

Zolecki's comments come after general manager Ruben Amaro said Monday that Nola is getting closer to a promotion to the majors.

"He's close," Amaro said. "He's still working on some things. He struggled through a couple of games. He hasn't necessarily been knocked around, but it hasn't been easy for him. He's still learning some things and dealing with more veteran hitters in Triple-A, which is a good test for him.

"I don't think he's that far away, but when he's ready he'll be here. Just because our rotation is very poor right now, it doesn't mean we're going to bring him to the big leagues for that reason. We're going to bring him when it's time for him developmentally."

Nola, who is considered a top-100 prospect by MLB.com (No. 37) and Baseball America (No. 39), has made four starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley following his promotion from Double-A Reading. The 2014 first-round pick is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA at Triple-A. He is 14-6 with a 2.31 ERA in 28 outings (27 starts) since turning pro.
