Giants SP Matt Cain back on DL with elbow nerve irritation

(7:07 pm ET) The Giants have placed embattled starter Matt Cain on the disabled list with right elbow nerve irritation, CSN Bay Area has reported.

Cain is having easily his worst season after losing the first three months to an elbow issue. His 6.15 ERA is nearly two points higher than any he has compiled in a full season during his career.


Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig a no-go Friday against Cubs

(6:45 pm ET) A hamstring injury sustained while trying to beat out an infield hit Thursday has Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig out of the lineup Friday with the Cubs in town.

Puig has had issues much of the season with his hamstring. It remains to be seen how long the latest one keeps him sidelined.


Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez fine for Friday game

(6:42 pm ET) Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was true to his word. He stated Thursday that he would not miss any time after fouling a pitch off his knee and he is indeed in the lineup Friday against the visiting Cubs.

Gonzalez lost a four-game hitting streak with his 0-for-2 effort Thursday before his removal from the game.


Cubs CF Dexter Fowler back in action Friday

(6:35 pm ET) Various ailments, including a shin injury, will not keep Cubs leadoff hitter and center fielder Dexter Fowler out of the lineup Friday against the host Dodgers. The bad news is that he has to face Clayton Kershaw.

Fowler lost only a couple days to his physical issues. He returns in an 0-for-9 skid, but he ranks sixth in the majors this season with 84 runs scored.


Orioles CF Adam Jones fine for Friday game

(6:23 pm ET) Orioles slugger Adam Jones is ready to roll Friday night in Texas after leaving the game Thursday following a frightening collision with the wall as he chased a fly ball. He is in the lineup.

Jones can now concentrate on ending a rare 0-for-9 slump. He enters play with a typically strong slash line of .280/319/.497.


Rangers OF Josh Hamilton takes BP; could be back soon

(6:17 pm ET) Shelved Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is taking batting practice on the field Friday, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which indicates that he's getting closer to returning to action.

Hamilton is eligible to be activated Monday off the disabled list. He has been sidelined since Aug. 20 with left knee inflammation.


Astros' George Springer to begin rehab assignment Saturday

(6:15 pm ET) Astros outfielder George Springer will begin a rehab assignment Saturday at Double-A, reports the Houston Chronicle. Springer has not played since July 1 after fracturing his wrist.

Report: Giants to start Chris Heston over Matt Cain on Sunday

(6:08 pm ET) The Giants are planning to promote and start Chris Heston rather than Matt Cain on Sunday against St. Louis, according to CSN Bay Area, which explans that the former threw a bullpen session Wednesday to prepare himself for the outing. 

Cain has been a mess most of the year. He allowed six runs in in five innings Tuesday to the Cubs to lower his record to 2-4 and raise his ERA to 6.15.

If he is indeed getting skipped this weekend, it remains to be seen if he is permanently out of the rotation as San Francisco continues to fight for a playoff spot.


Orioles promote Dariel Alvarez; option Henry Urrutia

Yankees outright RP Chris Capuano to Triple-A

(5:58 pm ET) The Yankees outrighted relief pitcher Chris Capuano to Triple-A, the team announced.

Capuano was designated for assignment on Wednesday. He has a 7.71 ERA in 35 innings this season.
