Sean Rodriguez goes yard again Friday

(1:14 am ET) Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez went yard for the second time in as many days Friday night against the Yankees.

Rodriguez made a pinch-hit appearance for David Dejesus in the seventh, grounding into a fielder's choice. In his second at-bat, he took reliever Adam Warren deep for a two-run shot in the eighth inning. He went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBI in an 11-5 victory. He is hitting .250 with three homers and seven RBI in just 16 at-bats.

Cory Spangenberg on minor-league DL

(1:13 am ET) Padres infielder prospect Cory Spangenberg has been placed on the seven-day disabled list at Double-A San Antonio, after suffering concussion-like symptoms Tuesday, according to MLB.com. The report does not indicated whether he has been diagnosed with a concussion, but the organization is taking a cautious approach with him after he missed six weeks with a concussion in 2012.  

Surgery not recommended for Ryan Jackson

(1:10 am ET) Padres infielder Ryan Jackson may not need surgery after all, as MLB.com reports he has been diagnosed with a just a strain in his right wrist. It was previously reported that he would need surgery on the wrist, though further examination was needed, which he received via the team's doctors in San Diego.

Jackson is on the seven-day disabled list at Triple-A El Paso, and there is no timetable for his expected return.  


James Loney plates four in win over Yankees

(1:10 am ET) Rays first baseman James Loney came up big at the plate Friday night against the Yankees.

Loney doubled in two runs in the fourth off starter Hidoki Kuroda and singled two more runs in the seventh off reliever Adam Warren to give his team the lead for good. He was also plunked eighth and finished 2 for 4 with four RBI in an 11-5 victory. He is hitting .235/.322/.392 with one home run and nine RBI in 51 at-bats to start the season.

Casey Kelly close to minor-league rehab

(1:06 am ET) Padres pitching prospect Casey Kelly will pitch in an extended spring training game Monday at the team's complex in Arizona, as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The next step to competitive games could come shortly after.

"If he passes the test Monday, he'll go out on a rehab assignment," Padres manager Bud Black told MLB.com Friday.

Kelly will likely make his move to Double-A San Antonio late next week, if he avoids any setbacks. He is more than a year removed from surgery.  


Michael Morse expected back Saturday

(1:06 am ET) Giants outfielder Michael Morse was out of the lineup Friday against the Padres, but did appear in the game as a pinch hitter, grounding out in an eighth-inning appearance. He was sidelined due to a bit of hamstring tightness that bothered him in the previous game, though manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com he expects him back in the lineup Saturday. 

A.J. Ellis making plenty of progress in recovery

(12:57 am ET) Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis is making solid progress in his recovery from surgery on his left knee, though he hasn't been cleared for all baseball activities, as he told MLB.com Friday.

"I can do everything, baseball-wise, except run," Ellis said Friday, just 10 days after his procedure. "And that's not a big part of my game."

Ellis did not that his recovery might be faster than expected as this is his second time undergoing this type of procedure. He is recovering from a cleanup of the medial meniscus in his left knee, and is expected to miss around four weeks of action.

"It's a little more accelerated this time, because it was in the offseason [after the 2012 season] the last time," Ellis said. "The biggest thing is, I felt so much better when I woke up the morning after surgery, and it's all been good since."


Matt Daley gets the call

(12:54 am ET) The Yankees called up pitcher Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Friday's loss to the Rays. Daley is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA over four relief appearances (five innings) in the minors this season.

David Phelps exits game after taking liner off hand

(12:50 am ET) Yankees reliever David Phelps had his relief outing cut short Friday, after taking a liner off the hand in the seventh inning of his team's 11-5 loss to Tampa Bay, YES Network reports.

Phelps lasted only 15 pitches and was charged with a run and a hit over two-thirds of an inning. He owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 8 1/3 innings pitched to start the season. His status remains uncertain moving forward.

David Freese still uncertain if he'll return Saturday

(12:46 am ET) Angels third baseman David Freese told MLB.com Friday that he injured his hamstring during his last at-bat on Wednesday. Although he was available as a pinch-hitter in Friday's win over the Tigers, he remains uncertain if he'll return to the starting lineup for Saturday's tilt against Detroit.
