Tom Koehler a tough-luck loser to D-Backs

(10:24 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler turned in a solid performance as he suffered a tough-luck loss Saturday night against the Diamondbacks.

Koehler (0-2), who made his second start of the season, surrendered a leadoff home run to Gerardo Parra for his only damage of the night. He permitted one run and three hits over six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two in a 1-0 defeat.

Koehler has allowed three runs over 11 innings of work since joining the starting rotation. He has struck out eight and walked three over that span. He is scheduled to make his next start Friday on the road against the White Sox.
Rick Porcello credits changeup for hot streak

(10:24 pm ET) Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 25 innings over his last four starts, and he's crediting his changeup for his excellent stretch.

"My changeup has been coming around nicely," Porcello told MLB.com "I've been able to get some swings and misses off it lately, especially with two strikes. I'm throwing it to both righties and lefties. It's been a nice pitch for me this year."

Porcello is 2-2 with a 5.92 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 38 innings this season.

John McDonald dealing with elbow issue

(10:09 pm ET) Pirates infielder John McDonald, on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, is also experiencing elbow discomfort, manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com Saturday.

McDonald is expected to go on a rehab assignment before he would be activated. He has been sidelined since May 14 and was hitless in his last six games before landing on the DL.
Chris Davis ties for AL lead with 12th homer

(10:08 pm ET) Orioles first baseman Chris Davis tied for the AL lead by hitting his 12th home run Saturday against the Rays . He went 2 for 4 with a single and the first-inning solo homer.

Davis is hitting .322/.415/.678 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI.

Adam Jones homers, drives in three

(10:05 pm ET) Orioles center fielder Adam Jones hit his sixth home run Saturday against the Rays, driving in three runs while going 2 for 4 with a walk. It was Jones' first three-RBI game since April 6, giving him 29 on the year.

Jones has hit .318/.355/.500 in 186 plate appearances.

James McDonald will throw bullpen Tuesday

(10:05 pm ET) Pirates starting pitcher James McDonald, who has thrown from flat ground recently, will throw a bullpen session Tuesday as he continues to make progress from shoulder inflammation.

McDonald has been sidelined since May 7. The right-hander went 2-2 with a 5.76 ERA in six starts before landing on the disabled list.
Matt Joyce has two double and a home run in win

(10:00 pm ET) Rays right fielder Matt Joyce had three of his team's 10 extra-base hits in a 10-6 win over the Orioles Saturday night, including two doubles and his seventh home run. He drove in a team-high five runs.

It was the first three-hit game of the season for Joyce, who has hit .279/.380/.512 in 43 at-bats in May.

Hector Gimenez's four hits includes home run

(9:56 pm ET) White Sox catcher Hector Gimenez entered Saturday with three hits in 24 at-bats this season, but had his first four-hit game of his career, going 4 for 5 with a three-run home run and three singles.

The game boosts Gimenez's season line to .241/.314/.483, but it wasn't all positive as he also allowed two passed balls.

Alberto Callaspo homers, drives in five runs

(9:51 pm ET) Angels third baseman Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning of a 12-9 win over the White Sox Saturday, going 2 for 3 with two runs, five RBI and two sacrifice flies.

It was a nice rebound for Callaspo, who was 0 for 7 in his previous two games. He has hit .274/.327/.405 with three home runs in 99 plate appearances.

Chris Carpenter completes extended bullpen session

(9:49 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, on the 60-day disabled list with an injured shoulder, threw an extended bullpen session before Saturday's game at Busch Stadium.

With Jaime Garcia sidelined indefinitely with a shoulder injury, Carpenter's recovery process takes on added significance. He is hoping to find his way back into the starting rotation.

"He's in phenomenal shape, we all know that," manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com. "He's a tireless worker and you could see that he was right at the point he wanted to be which was tired and see how he could still execute his pitches."

Carpenter will throw a short session Monday and then a long one Thursday before the team maps out his next step in recovery.
