Sean Marshall unavailable with shoulder inflammation
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:58 pm ET) Reds reliever Sean Marshall is sidelined, due to inflammation in his left shoulder, a similar issue to the one that forced him to the disabled list earlier in the season.

"A little bit," he told the Cincinnati Enquirer . "I'm getting a little better understanding of when it feels good and when it needs a little more rest. Today, when I was warming up as normally do to get my shoulder loose, I felt little bit of crankiness. I threw some balls and felt a little bit of crankiness."

Marshall does not seem to think this will also require a trip to the DL, but they are being extra careful with him.

"We're erring on the side of caution," Marshall said. "I told them I was little sore. We have some very capable arms come out of the bullpen a time or two season so far. I needed this extra day of rest. I'll be back to the way I’ve been feeling."

Nick Punto stays hot with two hits
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:53 pm ET) Dodgers infieler Nick Punto knocked a pair of singles Wednesday against Milwaukee.

Punto finished 2 for 4 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. He's been excellent for the Dodgers in a utility role, as he owns a .330/.418/.404 line in 36 games.

Ryan Braun hits ninth home run
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:51 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun hit his ninth home run in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers.

The home run, a solo shot, was Braun's only hit in three at-bats to go with a walk. He's hitting a robust .323/.410/.574 and appears to be in the form that won him an MVP in 2011 and earned him runner-up honors last year.

Alex Avila sitting amid struggles at plate
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(5:49 pm ET) Tigers catcher Alex Avila was not in the starting lineup Wednesday against Cleveland right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez. Avila won't be starting Thursday against Minnesota lefty Scott Diamond, either, the Detroit News reports.

That said, Tigers skipper Jim Leyland backed the slumping Avila as the team's everyday catcher. They are not yet ready to annoint Brayan Pena into that role.

"I don't want to indicate that Alex isn't our catcher," said Leyland. "He is our catcher."

Avila hasn't hit higher than .227 all season and his average hasn't been above .200 since April 11 except for one day. He's hitting just .155 since April 11 with two homers and eight RBI over 84 at-bats. Avila is hitting .053 against lefties but just .198 against righties.

"I did this with Pudge (Rodriguez) toward the end," said Leyland. "I played him, then sat him out, played him, then sat him out. He didn't particularly like it, but it actually worked pretty good. I'm not saying I'm trying that with Alex, but I have to do something. We'll get through it together, but right now you have to go with your gut. There's no magic formula. I've talked to him, but if one nice conversation could solve all the problems, it would have been solved a while back. But I don't have the answer. The kid is struggling — and as the manager, you feel sorry for him. Trust me."

Carl Crawford knocks in two, steals a base
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:48 pm ET) Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford went 2 for 4 in Wednesday's win over Milwaukee.

Crawford's hits were both singles but he still managed two runs scored and two RBI to go with a walk and a stolen base. His batting average is back above .300 to .302 as he continues to thrive atop the Dodgers' lineup.

Ramon Hernandez gets on the home run board
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:46 pm ET) Dodgers catcher Ramon Hernandez hit his first home run in Wednesday's win over Milwaukee.

Hernandez went 2 for 3 with two runs and two walks as well. Hernandez is still hitting just .120/.241/.280 and isn't expected to play much behind regular starter A.J. Ellis.

Scott Van Slyke doubles twice against Milwaukee
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:44 pm ET) Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke doubled twice in Wednesday's win over Milwaukee.

Van Slyke finished 2 for 4 with two RBI, a run and a walk as well. With Andre Ethier apparently drawing the ire of Don Mattingly and possibly on the trade market, Van Slyke may be in line for more at-bats in both the near future and the long run

Matt Kemp fills up box score against Milwaukee
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:42 pm ET) Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp singled twice in a win Wednesday over Milwaukee.

Kemp finished 2 for 4 with a walk, run scored, RBI and stolen base. Kemp now has a four-game hitting streak -- something typically commonplace for the two-time All-Star, but he'll take any positive developments given his performance this year. His line sits at a pedestrian .270/.319/.356.

Hyun-jin Ryu shuts down Brewers
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:39 pm ET) Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu moved to 5-2 with a win Wednesday over Milwaukee.

Ryu gave up two runs over 7 1/3 innings with six hits and two walks allowed. He struck out four. His ERA is down to 3.30 and he has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts.

Kyle Lohse not concerned about elbow
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5:37 pm ET) Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse has been dealing with irritation in his right elbow for the past three starts, so the team finally decided to skip him in the rotation, according to MLB.com. Lohse has been recovering slower than usual between starts as a result of this elbow injury, though it is not expected to be a serious problem moving forward.

"He could go out and pitch," manager Ron Roenicke said. "But because he didn't have a spring training, we would rather try to get rid of this, so we're going to bump him a start."

Lohse is expected to return to the mound at some point in the team's series in Minnesota next week, which runs from Monday through Thursday. The elbow is not expected to require a disabled list trip.

Lohse is 1-5 with a 3.79 ERA since joining the team.
