by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:42 am ET) Mariners closer Fernando Rodney struck out one and worked his way past a walk in a scoreless ninth inning for the save Friday night at home against the A's. He needed 26 pitches to close out the game. He is 27 for 29 in save chances, with a 1.98 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 36 1/3 innings of relief.

Felix Hernandez twirls a gem for win No. 11
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:40 am ET) Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez put together another dominant outing Friday night against the A's, outdueling Jeff Samardzija for his 11th win of the season. The right-hander yielded two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine over eight innings of a 3-2 victory.

Hernandez has logged eight innings in each of his last three starts. He enters the All-Star break 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP over 20 starts (144 1/3 innings). He will likely be at the top of the rotation once the Mariners return from the All-Star break.

Jeff Samardzija goes the distance in losing effort
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:36 am ET) Athletics starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija went the distance but took a tough-luck loss in a duel against Felix Hernandez and the Mariners Friday night, dropping to 3-8 on the year. The right-hander yielded three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five over eight innings of a 3-2 defeat.

Over his first two starts -- with his new team -- covering 15 innings, Samardzija has allowed only four earned runs. He enters the All-Star break with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 19 starts (123 innings). He'll likely be at the top of the rotation once Oakland returns from the All-Star break.

Garcia had surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. He's expected to miss the rest of the season while recovering from the surgery.

Molina had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. He's expected to miss between 8-12 weeks while he recovers. He hopes to be back before the end of the regular season.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:29 am ET) Dodgers infielder Justin Turner (hamstring) took swings against live pitching at the team's spring training facility in Arizona, MLB.com reports. Manager Don Mattingly expects Turner to return from the 15-day disabled list shortly after the All-Star break.

Kolten Wong goes yard Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12:25 am ET) Cardinals infielder Kolten Wong clubbed his fifth home run Friday against the Brewers.

Wong led off the top of the sixth with a solo blast. He worked a four pitch at-bat against Yovani Gallardo. On the final pitch, Wong hit a 91 mph fastball out to right for the solo shot. He finished 1 for 5, with one run scored and one RBI.

Nick Vincent completes 'pen session, nearing rehab stint
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:25 am ET) Padres pitcher Nick Vincent completed a 30-pitch bullpen session without any issues on Friday, MLB.com reports. He is expected to start a minor-league rehab assignment Monday for Class A Lake Elsinore.

"His stuff was crisp, and he used all of his pitches and simulated some at-bats against lefty and righty hitters," manager Bud Black said.

Trevor Rosenthal notches another save Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12:11 am ET) Cardinals reliever Trevor Rosenthal picked up save 28 Friday against the Brewers.

Rosenthal entered the game with a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. After allowing a single to open the frame, Rosenthal managed to strike out the next two hitters he faced. Rosenthal then got Rickie Weeks to ground out, ending the game. Rosenthal has a 3.50 ERA on the year.

Joe Kelly clobbered in Milwaukee
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12:08 am ET) Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly was smashed in his first outing off the disabled list Friday.

Kelly lasted just three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three during the outing. Kelly immediately found himself in trouble. He hit Carlos Gomez to open the game, and then proceeded to put the next two hitters on base. Aramis Ramirez managed to drive in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, and Khris Davis opened things up with a two-run double. After another walk, Kelly managed to get out of the inning.

The second inning offered no relief. Kelly allowed the first two runners to reach base, and then gave up a triple to Scooter Gennett, clearing the bases. With two outs, Ryan Braun also tripled, driving in the third run of the inning. Kelly actually pitched a scoreless third inning, but was pulled after he reached his pitch count. He threw 78 pitches during the outing.

The Cardinals managed to battle back, giving Kelly the no-decision. His next start will likely be scheduled shortly after the All-Star break.

Yovani Gallardo roughed up against St. Louis Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12:08 am ET) Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo had a rough start Friday against the Cardinals.

Gallardo allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three during the outing. Home runs were a major issue for Gallardo during the game. He gave up a two-run shot to Matt Adams in the third, and then allowed a solo shot to Kolten Wong in the sixth. A few batters later, Jhonny Peralta belted a two-run shot. Gallardo was pulled with a one-run lead, but the Brewers couldn’t hold on. He received a no-decision.

Gallardo’s next start will come shortly after the All-Star break.
