Drew Hutchison K's 9 in no-decision
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:17 am ET) Blue Jays starting pitcher Drew Hutchison pitched well Thursday against the Orioles, but was let down by his bullpen as he settled for a no-decision in an 11-4 loss.

Hutchison tossed his second quality start of the season, and had the Orioles' hitters off balance for much of the start. He allowed two runs in the fifth inning, but that was all the Orioles got to him for, on his hits and a walk. He struck out nine batters for the second straight start, but settled for a no-decision, his third in a row.

Hutchison is off to a solid start in his return to the rotation, posting a 3.46 ERA despite going 1-1 in his first five starts. He has 33 strikeouts in 26 innings of work heading into his next start, Wednesday in Kansas City.

Craig Stammen pegged with the loss after long relief outing
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:14 am ET) Nationals pitcher Craig Stammen made a long-relief appearance on Thursday, but was pegged with the loss in extras against the Padres.

Stammen allowed a run-scoring single to Xavier Nady in the 12th inning for his only damage of the night. He was charged with one run on two hits and no walks while striking out three over three innings of work. He owns a 4.40 ERA over 14 1/3 innings pitched.

Jordan Zimmermann stays sharp in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:11 am ET) Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann put together a quality start on Thursday, but failed to factor into the decision in a 4-3 defeat in extras. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five over six innings pitched.

Zimmermann owns a 4.05 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP and a 28:7 K:BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings pitched. He will make his next start Wednesday at Houston.

Huston Street collects eighth save in extras vs. Nationals
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:02 am ET) Padres closer Huston Street worked his way around a double, as he struck out one in a scoreless frame for his eighth save of the season Thursday night against the Nationals in extras.

Street needed only 11 pitches in the 12th, eight of which were strikes. He owns a 1.00 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP over his first nine innings pitched.

Bud Norris picks up first win over Blue Jays
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:02 am ET) Orioles starting pitcher Bud Norris snapped a three-game winless skid Thursday, in an 11-4 win over the Blue Jays.

Norris picked up his first win of the season, thanks to his second quality start. He was hurt by the long ball early, allowing three runs on two second-inning homers, but settled in nicely from then on. Norris was ultimately charged with three runs on five hits and a walk in his six innings of work, while striking out four batters.

Norris is now 1-2 on the season, with a 4.44 ERA in four starts. He will look to get to .500 in his next trip to the mound, Wednesday against the Pirates.

Yoenis Cespedes exits game with hamstring injury
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was forced out of Thursday's contest because of a left hamstring injury, and is expected to miss "a few games," the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cespedes was seen limping after legging out an infield single in the seventh inning. He was checked out by trainers and replaced by Josh Reddick. He finished 1 for 5 before the injury. He is hitting .238/.316/.464 on the year.

Gordon Beckham will play everyday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) White Sox Gordon Beckham came off the disabled list Thursday after overcoming an oblique injury, and was in the starting lineup for that afternoon's game against the Tigers. He was hitless in four trips to the plate, including three strikeouts, as the White Sox fell 7-4.

After the game, manager Robin Ventura told MLB.com Beckham will be his starter at second base moving forward, despite solid play from Marcus Semien in his place.

"You don't lose that spot just because you're hurt," Ventura said. "So we expect [Beckham] to be in there."

Alex Torres gets his first win Thursday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) Padres pitcher Alex Torres was awarded the win Thursday night in extras against the Nationals.

Torres struck out one and pitched two-thirds of a scoreless inning in the 11th before the offense scored the go-ahead run in the 12th. He owns a 0.93 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 9 2/3 innings pitched.

Andrew Cashner makes rare appearance in outfield
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner became the first pitcher in franchise history to play outfield on Thursday against the Nationals.

Manager Bud Black replaced injured Seth Smith with Cashner at left field, setting himself up for a potential double-switch later in the game. Cashner played the field for one batter before he was replaced by Tommy Medica in a 4-3 win.

Cashner owns a 2.10 ERA and 31:10 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Nationals.

Seth Smith exits game with groin strain
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/24/2014) Padres outfielder Seth Smith was forced out of Thursday's game against the Nationals because of right groin strain.

Smith was removed from the game in the 11th inning after grounding out to second base. He was replaced by starting pitcher Andrew Cashner. Cashner became the first pitcher in franchise history to play outfield.

Smith doubled in a run in the fourth and finished 1 for 3 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI before the injury. He is hitting .277 with two home runs and seven RBI in 65 at-bats. His status remains uncertain for the second game of a four-game series on Friday.
