Francisco Liriano turns in strong start

(10:18 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano turned in a strong start Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Liriano allowed one run on three hits over six innings. He had some major control issues during the start, walking five. Liriano struck out two during the outing. Liriano was able to work around this early walks, tossing four scoreless frames to open the game. He gave up his only run in the fifth inning. Liriano allowed a leadoff double to open the frame. That runner advanced to third on a flyout. The run came home after Liriano induced a groundout for the second out of the inning. Liriano lasted one more inning, and was pulled after throwing 99 pitches.

With the win, Liriano improved to 6-10. He’ll take on the Braves in his next start.


Clay Buchholz struggles Wednesday

(10:17 pm ET) Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz had a rough start Wednesday against the Pirates. 

Buchholz allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits over four innings. He struck out three and walked one during the outing. The Pirates put pressure on Buchholz immediately. Gregory Polanco started things off in the first inning by hitting a solo home run. In the second, an error and two doubles plated two runs. After a mound visit, Buchholz would give up a single, scoring the third run of the inning. Neil Walker added another run the following inning, hitting a solo shot. Buchholz would get out of the third and toss a scoreless fourth inning, but left the game at that point.

With the loss, Buchholz dropped to 8-9. He’ll take on the Rays in his next start.


Steven Souza slugs first career home run

(10:06 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Steven Souza went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves Wednesday.

Souza entered the game just 1 for 15 in his first exposure to major-league pitching, but he was able to crank out his first career home run in the fifth inning to put the first run of the game on the board. The Nationals were not able to hold onto that lead, however.


Craig Kimbrel delivers 44th save Wednesday

(10:03 pm ET) Braves closer Craig Kimbrel earned his 44th save Wednesday, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 3-1 victory over the Nationals.

The coleader in the National League in saves, Kimbrel hadn't pitched since giving up a run one week ago in a non-save situation, but the Braves were able to end a five-game losing streak Wednesday. He owns a 1.71 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 88:25 K:BB ratio in 58 innings.


Andrelton Simmons exits with ankle injury Wednesday

(10:00 pm ET) Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons was removed from Wednesday's game in the top of the fourth inning due to an apparent ankle injury.

Simmons went 0 for 2 at the plate before exiting, ending a six-game hitting streak. He owns a .243/.285/.333 line with seven home runs and 45 RBI in 510 at-bats.


Ross Detwiler takes loss vs. Braves Wednesday

(9:57 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Ross Detwiler was stuck with a loss Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk in one inning while striking out one in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves.

Detwiler (2-3) loaded the bases in the sixth with his team up 1-0 and surrendering a three-run single to put the Braves ahead for good. It's the first time he's allowed runs in September after giving up seven earned runs in 10 1/3 innings in August. Detwiler owns a 4.11 ERA and 38:20 K:BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings.


Alex Wood strikes out eight in win vs. Nationals

(9:55 pm ET) Braves pitcher Alex Wood earned a win Wednesday, allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk in six innings and striking out eight in his team's 3-1 victory over the Nationals.

Wood (11-10) turned in his 10th straight quality start Wednesday, with the only damage coming on a solo home run in the fifth inning. He's racked up eight strikeouts or more in three of his last four outings. Wood owns a 2.78 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 164:43 K:BB ratio in 165 innings. He's scheduled to face the Pirates Tuesday.


Blake Treinen tosses five scoreless innings vs. Braves

(9:54 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Blake Treinen didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, giving up three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings while striking out three in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves.

Treinen left with his team up 1-0 but watched the bullpen immediately blow the lead and fall behind in the sixth inning. He's given up a total of eight earned runs in 31 2/3 innings over his six starts, with his most recent start before Wednesday coming back in late June. Including his relief appearances, he's up to eight scoreless innings in September. Treinen owns a 1.94 ERA and 29:12 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings. He's not yet scheduled for another start.


Blaine Boyer plays long toss Wednesday

(9:29 pm ET) Padres pitchr Blaine Boyer played long toss Wednesday and could throw a bullpen sessino Friday, MLB.com reports.

Boyer has been sidelined since Sept. 4 with a shoulder injury. He owns a 3.05 ERA and 29:8 K:BB ratio in 38 1/3 innings.


Lisalverto Bonilla to start Friday with Scott Baker still out

(8:53 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla will make another start Friday with Scott Baker still sidelined, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Baker indicated that he has improved but is not ready for a starting assignment. Bonilla delivered a quality start and earned a win in his first start Saturday.
