Report: Kurt Suzuki being eyed by Cardinals, Orioles
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1:36 pm ET) Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki, who is arguably enjoying his strongest season since 2009, is getting eyed by the Cardinals and Orioles, per CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Cardinals starting catcher Yadier Molina and Baltimore counterpart Matt Wieters are out for the season. Suzuki has proven to be one of the premier clutch hitters among major league catchers this season. He boasts a strong stat line of .308/.367/.393 while playing quite well behind the plate.

Jesse Hahn called up for Friday start
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:36 pm ET) The Padres recalled pitcher Jesse Hahn from Triple-A El Paso Friday, ahead of his scheduled start against the Braves.

Hahn was sent down prior to the All-Star break in order to stay on schedule. He made one start at Double-A San Antonio, tossing two scoreless innings.

Jace Peterson sent back to Triple-A
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:33 pm ET) The Padres optioned infielder Jace Peterson to Triple-A El Paso Friday, in order to clear a spot on the roster.

Peterson got the call just before the All-Star break but appeared in just two games for the Padres. He walked in his lone plate appearance before being sent down.

Issues with thumb, curve weaken Josh Hamilton
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1:27 pm ET) A still-ailing thumb and inability to consistently hit breaking balls have resulted in a power outage for Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton, ESPN has reported.

Hamilton has just three home runs in 45 games since returning from the thumb injury that landed him on the disabled list. He is also batting .200 on the season against curveballs - 47 points below the league average. Hamilton has whiffed on 49 percent of his swings against curveballs and 22 of his 42 plate appearances that ended on a curve resulted in a strikeout.

He owned a .741 slugging percentage before his injury and .382 since.

Report: Gregorio Petit set for return to the bigs
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1:09 pm ET) The Astros have promoted second baseman Gregorio Petit from Triple-A Oklahoma City, sources have told MLBDailyDish.com. That necessitates a roster move that has yet to be announced.

The 29-year-old Petit has 54 major league at-bats and has posted a .278 average, but has not played at that level since 2010 with Oakland.

Eury Perez comes off DL, sent to Triple-A
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:04 pm ET) The Nationals reinstated outfielder Eury Perez (toe) from the 60-day disabled list Friday, and then optioned him straight to Triple-A Syracuse.

Chris Leroux get DFA tag from Yankees
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:56 pm ET) The Yankees have subtracted one Chris to make room for another. They have designated right-hander Chris Leroux for assignment to make room for fellow pitcher Chris Capuano.

Leroux had been promoted Wednesday from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre and did not get a chance to pitch.

Matt Purke recalled, transferred to 60-day DL
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:55 pm ET) The Nationals recalled pitcher Matt Purke from Double-A Harrisburg and then placed him on the 60-day disabled list, in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Purke is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is out for the season.

Report: Mariners have Drew Stubbs on their radar
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:11 pm ET) The Mariners have made a trade offer for Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs, according to the Denver Post, which is further reporting that Colorado is hard-pressed to give him up and that no talks are ongoing.

Stubbs has enjoyed a strong season, though his home-away splits are pronounced. He owns a .351/.379/.619 stat line at the launching pad known as Coors Field and .229/.277/.343 on the road. Safeco Field is one of the tougher hitter's parks in major league baseball.

The report also claimed that Seattle has asked about such established hitters as Billy Butler and Marlon Byrd as well.

James Loney average production more pronounced lately
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:59 am ET) Rays first baseman James Loney has gained a reputation for a lack of power production despite a strong average. He has done nothing to dispel that perception in recent weeks.

Loney has improved his average from .273 to .284 with 17 hits in his last 47 at-bats and four multi-hit games in the last five. But he has just two extra-base hits with no home runs since July 1 and four RBI since July 2.

He has, however, been more than serviceable this season with 47 RBI and 41 runs scored in 99 games.
