Carlos Gonzalez exits game with ankle injury

(8:54 pm ET) Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was forced out of Friday's game against the Tigers in Detroit with an ankle injury, per the Detroit News.

Gonzalez sustained the injury while sliding into the short fence in the fifth inning. He was replaced by Brandon Barnes in the sixth. He finished 0 for 2 before the injury and is hitting .237 over 249 at-bats. His status remains uncertain for Saturday's game in Detroit.

Gerrit Cole to throw one more bullpen before next rehab start

(8:49 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole was scratched from Friday's rehab start for precautionary reasons, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Cole will instead throw another bullpen before making his next rehab start, at a date to be determined.

Michael Cuddyer starts swinging off a tee

(8:36 pm ET) Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer progressed to swinging off a tee on Friday, as he continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury, MLB.com. Cuddyer has been sidelined since June 5 with the injury. He is still a "a few weeks away," according to manager Walt Weiss.

"I got a really good report about his work in the cage," Weiss said. "Everything's a go. We're going to start giving him more and more."

Daniel Hudson ready for rehab work

Brewers retool weekend rotation

(8:23 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson was scratched for Saturday's start because of a blister on his throwing hand, the team announced. Kyle Lohse, who was initially scheduled to start Sunday, will make the start in his place on Saturday. Matt Garza has been pushed to Sunday.

Brandon Phillips starts fielding grounders

(8:12 pm ET) Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips began fielding ground balls Thursday for the first time having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, MLB.com reports on Friday. He's targeting a late August return.

"He's got a really great brace that protects his thumb from being bent to the wrong position when fielding," manager Bryan Price said. "The great thing about it is he's able to continue working on his footwork and stay in baseball shape and throw, which is very important. He's still a ways away from being able to swing the bat."

Nick Tepesch tosses 'pen session, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday

(8:09 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Nick Tepesch completed a bullpen session without any issues on Friday, according to MLB.com. Tepesch was scratched Friday because of a knee injury. He is tentatively scheduled to pitch Wednesday against the White Sox.

Yasmani Grandal sits out another game

(7:49 pm ET) Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal was held out of the starting lineup Friday against Atlanta. Grandal is dealing with fluid buildup in his right knee. He's appeared in 82 of 108 games this season for San Diego and is hitting .206 with nine homers and 24 RBI in 228 at-bats.

Jim Henderson will work on strengthening shoulder in Arizona

(7:33 pm ET) Brewers manager Ron Roenicke told reporters that reliever Jim Henderson will end his minor-league rehab assignment, but instead of being reinstated, he'll head back to the team's spring training facility in Arizona to work on strengthening his shoulder, per MLB.com.

Henderson has been sidelined since May due to a shoulder injury and remains without a timetable to return.

Jesse Chavez demoted back to the 'pen

(6:53 pm ET) A day after a blockbuster deal that sent Jon Lester to the Athletics, manager Bob Melvin has demoted pitcher Jesse Chavez back to the bullpen, according to the Bay Area News group on Friday. Chavez owns a 3.44 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 119:41 K:BB ratio in 125 2/3 innings.
