Ervin Santana serves up four home runs in loss
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:45 pm ET) Royals starting pitcher Ervin Santana took on his old team, the Angels, Thursday night and surrendered four home runs while allowing five earend runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings, taking a loss and dropping to 3-4 on the year. Santana struck out eight and walked none.

Home runs were a problem for Santana with the Angels last season, when he served up 39 homers in 30 starts. He had allowed six homers in eight starts heading into Thursday's game. The poor performance gives Santana a 3.14 ERA going into a matchup against the Cardinals Tuesday.

Ernesto Frieri removed from save opportunity
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:39 pm ET) Angels closer Ernesto Frieri was removed from a save opportunity Thursday after surrendering two earned runs on three hits and a walk while getting just two outs. Robert Coello came in to get the final out, saving Frieri from a blown save.

It was Frieri's third-straight appearance allowing at least one earned run, though he eraned saves in each of his previous two games.

Robert Coello earns first career save
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:36 pm ET) Angels reliever Robert Coello earned the first save of his career by getting the final out of a 5-4 win over the Royals Thursday. Regular closer Ernesto Frieri surrendered two earned runs on three hits and a walk before being pulled in favor of Coello.

Coello has not allowed an earned run in 7 1/3 innings this season.

Joe Blanton earns first win
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:32 pm ET) Angels starting pitcher Joe Blanton earned his first win Thursday after holding the Royals to two earned runs on seven hits and no walks in 6 1/3 innings. Blanton (1-7) struck out one. Six relievers combined to get the final eight outs of the game, with none pitching a full inning.

Blanton's rotation spot will be in jeopardy when Tommy Hanson returns, but Thursday's start was a good way to staunch the bleeding after allowing 23 hits in nine innings over his previous two starts. He'll face the Dodgers Tuesday with a 6.19 ERA.

David Ortiz homers vs. Indians
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:28 pm ET) Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz homered for the eighth time this season -- a three-run shot off starter Zach McAllister in the third -- for his only hit. He finished 1 for 3 with a run and three RBI in Thursday's 12-3 loss.

Ortiz is hitting .372 (16 for 43) with four home runs and 17 RBI in his last 11 games. He has a .351/.395/.640 line with eight homers and 34 RBI in 114 at-bats.

Will Middlebrooks listed as day-to-day
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:22 pm ET) Red Sox manager John Farrell told WEEI that third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who left Thursday's game with lower back spasms, is listed as day-to-day.

Farrell said Middlebrooks may have injured his back running out of the box in his last at-bat against the White Sox Wedneday. He has been held without a hit in his last 12 at-bats.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:21 pm ET) Tigers relief pitcher Octavio Dotel threw a bullpen session Thursday at the team's spring training complex, MLB.com reports. He has been dealing with elbow inflammation.

It was Dotel's first session on the mound since being shut down after experiencing a setback last week. He hasn't pitched for the Tigers since April 19.

Christian Garcia feels '100 percent'
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:17 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Christian Garcia told MLB.com his forearm is "100 percent" after pitching an inning in an extended spring game Thursday.

Garcia is expected to join Double-A Harrisburg next week to start on his rehab assignment. He will be used as a reliever in the minors, though there was talk in spring training of him becoming a starter.

Ryan Dempster gets rocked again
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:11 pm ET) Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster continued to struggle as he endured his shortest outing of the season and took the loss Thursday night against the Indians.

Dempster (2-5) surrendered a run-scoring double to Drew Stubbs in the second. He then gave up a two-run single to Mark Reynolds and allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice in the fourth. The right-hander was charged with four runs and five hits over three innings. He struck out four and walked four on 85 pitches.

Dempster is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in his last four starts after starting the season 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA. He is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday at home against the Phillies. He has allowed 14 runs -- 12 earned -- in his last 15 innings at Fenway Park.

Darren Oliver could land on DL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:10 pm ET) Blue Jays reliever Darren Oliver has been dealing with a sore shoulder for the past 7-10 days, which could require a stint on the disabled list, Sportsnet.ca reports.

"I'm sure we'll talk about it at some point," Oliver said.

Oliver has not pitched since May 18 and has allowed three runs -- two earned -- in his last two innings. He has a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances.
