Red Sox might skip Rick Porcello's next start after dropping to 4-9
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:03 pm ET) Red Sox starting pitcher Rick Porcello lasted just two innings during Wednesday's 11-2 loss against the Blue Jays, and now his next turn through the rotation might be skipped. Manager John Farrell hinted at the move following Wednesday's game by citing two off-days next week could allow the team to get creative with the rotation.

As for Porcello's shortest start of the season, the right-hander was in trouble from the first batter he faced Wednesday. Jose Reyes and Josh Donaldson led off the game with singles before Edwin Encarnacion launched a one-out, three-run homer. Russell Martin was then hit by a pitch before Justin Smoak parked a two-run homer.

Porcello (4-9) appeared to be doing better in the second inning, as he struck out two of the first three batters he faced. However, Jose Bautista hit a two-out, two-run homer to extended the Toronto lead to 7-0.

He was charged with seven runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out three. Porcello is now winless in his last eight starts (0-7). His ERA stands at 6.08 through 16 starts.

Reds RP Aroldis Champan nails down 16th save on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:51 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman worked an easy, perfect ninth inning on Wednesday to record his 16th save of the season. Chapman struck out one and needed just 12 pitches to retire the side in order, preserving the 2-1 victory over the Twins.

Chapman is a perfect 16-for-16 in save chances. He has not allowed a run in nine straight outings, and owns a miniscule 1.83 ERA overall this season.

Twins' Trevor May posts solid outing, takes tough loss Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:47 pm ET) Right-hander Trevor May took a tough-luck loss on Wednesday, as the Twins were shut down by Johnny Cueto and the Reds. May was strong in the outing, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six, but his record dropped to 4-7.

This was a nice bounceback effort for May, who was able to get all of one out before being pulled in the first inning with six runs allowed in his last start. May's ERA shrunk to 4.37 with Wednesday's performance.

Discounting that nightmare start in his previous outing, May has allowed more than three runs just once in his last eight starts.

Cubs 2B Addison Russell gets day off as offensive woes linger
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:42 pm ET) Cubs second baseman Addison Russell was held out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets for the first time since June 7. It was just the fourth time he wasn't in the lineup since his promotion from the minors.

Russell is mired in a 1-for-17 slump in his last five games. He is batting just .154 in his last 12 games, dropping his season average from .259 to .239.

Reds SP Johnny Cueto throws eight dominant innings Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:42 pm ET) Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto was excellent in his start against the Twins on Wednesday. Cueto went eight strong innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight, dropping his ERA to 2.84. He evened his record to 5-5 with this performance

This was Cueto's finest start since he twirled seven shutout innings on June 7. He retired 11 in a row at one point, and never really lost his composure in this one.

Cueto has pitched at least six innings in all but one of his 15 starts this season.

Twins option 1B Kennys Vargas to Double-A on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:37 pm ET) The Twins have optioned first baseman Kennys Vargas to Double-A Chattanooga following Wednesday's loss to the Reds, according to MLB.com. Vargas started on Wednesday and went 1 for 3 with a single and a strikeout.

Vargas has struggled all season, and was demoted to Triple-A earlier this season. He made his return to the majors on June 8, but hit just .240 (13 for 54) with two home runs and 17 strikeouts.

The Twins are expected to announce a corresponding roster move on Thursday.

Rangers 2B Rougned Odor gets a day off Wednesday vs. Orioles
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:31 pm ET) Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's clash with the Orioles. Odor had started each of the last eight games for the Rangers, and has been on quite a roll.

In those eight games, Odor was batting .387 (12 for 31) with two home runs, three doubles and just three strikeouts with five walks. Nevertheless, he'll take a seat with a lefty on the mound for the Orioles. Hanser Alberto will get the start at second base on Wednesday.

Braves OF Eury Perez (torso) back in lineup Wednesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:25 pm ET) Braves outfielder Eury Perez (torso) was back in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Nationals for the first time since colliding with Cameron Maybin in the outfield during Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Perez is batting .286 with one double, one RBI, one run and five strikeouts in 11 games (seven starts) for Atlanta.

Angels activate RP Mike Morin from 15-day DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:20 pm ET) The Angels activated reliever Mike Morin off the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. He has been sidelined since late May due to an oblique injury.

Morin spent four games on a rehab assignment between the Rookie League and Triple-A Salt Lake. He went 1-0 with one save and a 9.82 ERA. He had three scoreless outings to begin his rehab assignment before allowing four runs in his final appearance for Salt Lake.

Mets LF Michael Cuddyer sits with knee soreness on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(3:20 pm ET) Mets left fielder Michael Cuddyer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Cuddyer exited Tuesday's game with knee soreness, so it's of little surprise that he is on the bench for Wednesday's tilt.

John Mayberry will get the start in left field and bat fifth. Manager Terry Collins said Cuddyer would need a day or two off, but he does not think a DL stint will be necessary. Cuddyer is unlikely to play on Thursday.
