Ian Desmond finally gets a breather

(2:00 pm ET) After starting the first 43 games, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond finally received a breather Sunday at San Diego, replaced in the starting lineup by Danny Espinosa. Since homering in back-to-back games May 10-11, Desmond is mired in a 2-for-24 slump (.083) in his last seven games.

Desmond's batting average has declined from .300 to .268 during his recent slide.


Bryce Harper doesn't start Sunday

(1:57 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper missed a second straight game Sunday against the Padres because of a bruised left knee. Harper is batting .171 (6 for 35) with two home runs and four RBI in 12 May games.

Prospect Jonathan Singleton to start at Class A

(1:54 pm ET) Astros top prospect Jonathan Singleton is almost finished with his 50-game suspension due to a second failed drug test, MLB.com reports Sunday. He will begin his season next week at Class A Quad Cities. 

Singleton is expected to move quickly to Triple-A Oklahoma City as the top prospect in the organization, as ranked by MLB.com. 

The left-handed hitting first baseman hit .284 with 21 homers and 79 RBI over 131 games with Double-A Corpus Christi. He could push for playing time with Houston later this year. 


Brandon Beachy's rehab start delayed until Friday

(1:53 pm ET) Braves starting pitcher Brandon Beachy (elbow) was unable to begin a rehab assignment Sunday for Triple-A Gwinnett because the game was postponed by rain. Beachy will instead throwing a three-inning simulated game, according to MLB.com.

Beachy will now make a rehab start Friday for Gwinnett.


Angels send Barry Enright to Triple-A

(1:50 pm ET) The Angels sent recently designated reliever Barry Enright outright to Triple-A Salt Lake Sunday. Enright cleared waivers and remained with the L.A. organization. 

Enright has a 12.96 ERA on the year and a 2.28 WHIP over 8 1/3 innings. 


Adam Dunn returns from back spasms

(1:50 pm ET) White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn is back in the lineup Sunday against the Angels, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Dunn was forced to leave Saturday's game with back spasms. Dunn is on a five game hitting streak including four home runs, two doubles and 10 RBI.

Mike Adams likely headed to DL

(1:49 pm ET) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Sunday reliever Mike Adams remains day to day with a mild back strain, according to MLB.com. However, it is a "likelihood" Adams will be placed on the disabled list, Amaro added.

The Phillies will need to make a roster move when starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd is recalled from Triple-A to start Tuesday.


Rehab plan mapped out for Logan Morrison

(1:44 pm ET) Marlins first baseman Logan Morrison, who begins a rehab assignment Monday with Class A Jupiter, is expected to spend about a week playing for the Hammerheads before moving onto Double-A Jacksonville and then Triple-A New Orleans, according to MLB.com. Morrison remains on track for an early June return.

Mike Dunn 'having a good year'

(1:42 pm ET) Marlins reliever Mike Dunn has been one of the team's top relievers in 2013. He's 1-0 with a 1.77 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and six holds in 22 outings.

He has 20 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings and has been especially sharp at home, not allowing a run in 10 innings.

"Every game's the same. It's just attack the hitters," Dunn said, per MLB.com. "Whether it be at home or the road, I feel like I'm having a good year all around. It doesn't really matter where we're at. You've just got to go out and do your job no matter where it is."


Roy Oswalt outstanding in extended spring start

(1:27 pm ET) Rockies starting pitcher Roy Oswalt struck out nine in five innings during an extended spring start Saturday, according to MLB.com. He allowed only a leadoff bunt in the first of five scoreless innings.

Oswalt is expected to make 4-5 starts for Double-A Tulsa. He will be re-evaluated after those outings.
