Yankees' CC Sabathia gives up three home runs in no-decision
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:51 pm ET) Yankees starter CC Sabathia struggled in his outing against the Rangers on Thursday. The big left-hander allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out three, needing 80 pitches to get through five. He was left with a no-decision however, as he left the game with the score tied 5-5. The Rangers would win the game 7-6.

Sabathia was bitten by the longball in this one, as all five runs he allowed came on homers. Josh Hamilton's was the biggest blow, a three run shot in the very first inning. Shin-Soo Choo followed with a solo blast in the second, and then Ryan Rua knocked an inside-the-park home run in the fourth.

Sabathia has had a rough go of it so far in 2015. Over his last seven starts, the veteran is 1-1 with a 6.09 ERA. He has allowed nine home runs over that stretch as well.

Angels SP Matt Shoemaker gets no-decision after quality start
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:49 pm ET) Angels starter Matt Shoemaker went pitch-for-pitch with Astros ace Scott Kazmir on Thursday, but would leave with a no-decision in an eventual Los Angeles defeat.

Shoemaker went seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out seven hitters. Over his last two starts, Shoemaker has struck out 17 batters.

Shoemaker (5-7) has won just one of his last eight starts but has seen his ERA dip to 4.24.

Astros SP Scott Kazmir registers another solid start
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:43 pm ET) Astros starter Scott Kazmir kept up his impressive work since being traded to Houston, tossing 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball Thursday in a pitcher's duel.

Kazmir has not allowed a run in 14 2/3 innings since joining the Astros, and was in control for much of the night. He allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking three. Kazmir threw 111 pitches.

Kazmir (6-5) has allowed just one earned run in five July starts to lower his ERA to 2.10.

Anthony Rizzo gives Cubs the lead with three-run blast
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:41 pm ET) Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo homered for the second consecutive game on Thursday, as he went 3 for 4 with three RBI.

Rizzo, who also doubled in the 5-2 win over the Brewers, launched his 18th home run--a go-ahead three-run shot--in the eighth inning, with the Cubs trailing 2-0.

Cubs' Hector Rondon earns 14th save on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:37 pm ET) Cubs reliever Hector Rondon picked up his 14th save of the season in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Brewers. Rondon tossed a perfect ninth inning, needing just six pitches to dispose of the Brewers in order.

Rondon has registered a save in back-to-back games for the Cubs after going more than a month without one.

C Jason Castro's heroics lifts Astros to victory
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:37 pm ET) Catcher Jason Castro saved his lone hit of the game for the right time, connecting on a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Astros a 3-0 victory and a sweep of the Angels.

Castro tagged his eighth homer of the season to right field to spark a raucous celebration for the Astros, who have now solidfied their hold on first place in the AL West after this huge series.

It was Castro's first home run since June 12 and his first RBI since July 3.

Brewers waste seven shutout innings by Jimmy Nelson on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:34 pm ET) Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson had a strong outing against the Cubs on Thursday. The youngster fired seven shutout innnings, allowing just two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. He threw 104 pitches on the evening.

Despite the brilliant effort, Nelson was left with a no-decision after the bullpen allowed the Cubs to score five runs over the final two innings in the 5-2 Cubs' win.

Nelson had a strong month of July, going 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in five starts.

Pirates SP A.J. Burnett rocked by Reds
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:33 pm ET) A.J. Burnett was roughed-up by the Reds on Thursday in one of his worst starts of the season, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in just 4 1/3 innings as the Pirates were blown out.

Burnett gave up a first-inning home run and wasn't very effective after that. He threw 97 pitches in his short stint, walking two and striking out four.

Burnett has now lost two straight games, and has seen his ERA rise from 1.99 on July 6 to 3.06.

Cubs SP Jake Arrieta takes no-decision despite quality start
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:30 pm ET) Cubs starter Jake Arrieta was solid against the Brewers on Thursday, but was left with a no-decision in the 5-2 win. Arrieta allowed two runs on five hits over six innings, walking three and striking out six.

Arrieta actually left the game trailing 2-0, but the Cubs were able to rally back late in the game to get the right-hander off the hook.

Arrieta was brilliant in his six July starts. He went 4-1 with an impressive 1.90 ERA and a 44:11 K:BB ratio. He has now thrown eight consecutive quality starts.

Reds SP David Holmberg wins first start of season
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(11:27 pm ET) Recalled from Triple-A to make the start when the Reds traded Johnny Cueto, starter David Holmberg was excellent Thursday in picking up his first win of the season, shutting down the Pirates.

Holmberg went six innings, allowing just five hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out four, and was the beneficiary of a ton of offensive support.

Holmberg was 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA in eight prior MLB appearances, six of them starts.
