Mike Fiers whiffs nine in losing effort Saturday

(12:37 am ET) Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers put together a quality start in a losing effort Saturday against the Giants in San Francisco, dropping to 4-2 on the season. The right-hander permitted three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven innings of a 3-1 defeat.

Over his last four starts covering 27 innings, Fiers has allowed six earned runs. He owns a 1.93 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP over 42 innings of work. He will make his next start Thursday at home against St. Louis.

Cory Rasmus Ks six in first-career start

(12:32 am ET) Angels pitcher Cory Rasmus lasted only three innings but struck out s career-high six in his first career start Saturday against the A's. He allowed one hit in a scoreless outing for a no-decision. Rasmus owns a 2.48 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 40 innings of work this season. 

Santiago Casilla escapes shaky outing with the save

(12:32 am ET) Giants reliever Santiago Casilla may have lost his grip on the closer role despite getting the save Saturday night against the Brewers.

Casilla allowed a run scoring single to Ryan Braun in the ninth inning. He was charged with one run on two hits and no walks over one inning of work. He has converted 13 of 17 save chances, with a 1.82 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP over 49 1/3 innings of relief.


Jake Peavy flirts with a no-no Saturday

(12:26 am ET) Giants pitcher Jake Peavy took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and came away with the win Saturday night against the Brewers, improving to 4-13 on the year.

Mark Reynolds hit a single into right field to end Peavy's no-hit bid with one out in eighth inning. The right-hander yielded one hit and three walks while striking out eight over 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Of his 113 pitches, 71 were strikes.

Peavy owns a 4.15 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP over 27 starts (171 1/3 innings). His next start will come Friday at Detroit.

Huston Street picks up 35th save

Jeff Samardzija Ks nine, goes the distance in losing effort

(12:16 am ET) Athletics pitcher Jeff Samardzija was credited with a complete game but was pegged with a tough-luck loss Saturday against the Angels, dropping to 6-11 on the year. The right-hander permitted two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and no walks while striking out nine in eight innings of a 2-0 defeat.

Samardzija has allowed two earned runs or fewer in back-to-back starts. He owns a 3.14 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 28 starts (183 2/3 innings). His next start will come Saturday at home against Houston.

Marco Gonzalez picks up first career win Saturday

(12:08 am ET) Cardinals pitcher Marco Gonzalez pitched well and received more than enough run support, earning his first career win Saturday night against the Cubs in Game 2 of a doubleheader. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings of a 13-2 victory. He will likely be sent back down to Triple-A Memphis after the start.

Tsuyoshi Wada suffers second loss of the season

(12:04 am ET) Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada took the loss Saturday night against the Cardinals in Game 2 of a doubleheader, dropping to 4-2 on the year. The right-hander permitted four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings of a 13-2 defeat.

Over his last three starts covering 17 1/3 innings, Wada has allowed four earned runs. He owns a 2.79 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over nine starts (51 2/3 innings). His next start will come Friday at home against Pittsburgh.

Dustin Pedroia may be dealing with concussion-like symptoms

(8/30/2014) Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters following Saturday's game against the Rays that second baseman Dustin Pedroia has "some symptoms that are consistent with a concussion," the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Pedroia took a shot to the face by Logan Forsythe while covering second base in the second inning. He was replaced by Will Middlebrooks. Pedroia is hitting .280 with seven homers and 51 RBI over 535 at-bats this season. At this point, the chances of him playing Sunday at Tropicana Field aren't great.

James Shields can't factor into decision Saturday

(8/30/2014) Royals pitcher James Shields wasn't a factor into the decision Saturday night at home against the Indians. The right-hander permitted one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings of a 3-2 defeat in extras.

Over his last three starts covering 19 2/3 innings, Shields has allowed nine earned runs. He owns a 3.38 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 29 starts (192 innings). His next start will come Friday in New York against the Yankees.
