Dempster flew back to Boston to get a full night of sleep in advance of his next start Thursday against the Indians. He skipped his normal bullpen session Tuesday and instead made some throws from flat ground.

Gonzalez held the Giants to just one run in 7 1/3 innings of work, and that run came around to score after he was pulled from the game. He walked Angel Pagan with one out in the eighth inning, before being pulled for reliever Drew Storen.
Gonzalez finished with just the one run allowed on four hits and two walks, while striking out five batters. He threw 116 pitches in the outing, a season-high.
Gonzalez has lowered his ERA to 3.66 with four quality starts in a row, and he will try to keep that string up in his next start, scheduled for Tuesday against the Orioles.

Morales has allowed six runs over 12 innings through four minor league rehab appearances. Boston is stretching him out to start but doesn't have an opening in the rotation.
"The fact is, he’s getting up and down multiple times with the innings pitched and coming out of each start with no issues," manager John Farrell said. "Everything is moving according to what our initial thoughts were with him. Once we get through tomorrow, we’ll re-evaluate that and see what the needs are here and certainly where he fits in."

Rodney walked Adam Lind with one out in the inning and was pulled by manager Joe Maddon. Joel Peralta finished the inning to send the game into extra innings.
Rodney has allowed runs in three of his last four appearances and has blown three of his four saves over his last nine outings. His ERA is 5.40.

Hellickson surrendered the two runs on four hits and a walk over eight innings. James Loney's RBI single in the top of the ninth put Hellickson in line for the win. But Rodney allowed a home run to Jose Bautista. Hellickson gave up a homer and RBI single to Bautista.
Hellickson struck out four and pitched much better than his last outing when he won despite allowing eight runs in 7 2/3 innings.
Hellickson (2-2) makes his next start Tuesday against Miami in an interleague series.

Cahill allowed a two-out homer and two doubles in a two-run first inning. He also gave up two runs in the third and finished allowing the four runs on seven hits in six innings.
Cahill did not walk a batter and struck out one, his lowest total of the season. Cahill is 3-5 with a 2.81 ERA. Before Wednesday, he had allowed fewer than four earned runs in seven-straight starts.
Cahill is scheduled to make his next start Monday against the Rangers.
