Nationals' Max Scherzer throws off mound, 'good to go'
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4:32 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer was able to throw off a mound on Tuesday, MASN Sports reported.

Scherzer jammed his thumb in his last start and won't start on Tuesday night against Atlanta.

He said he feels 100 percent and is "good to go", however. He doesn't believe he'll skip this turn in the rotation, just start a day late. Scherzer and the team still need to see how he feels on Wednesday morning before deciding on his availability.

Gibbons: Blue Jays have discussed moving Aaron Sanchez to 'pen
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:29 pm ET) The Blue Jays have discussed moving Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen, manager John Gibbons said Tuesday, per Sportsnet.ca. However, Gibbons added, "We talk about a lot of things."

The 22-year-old Sanchez is 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through four starts.

Sanchez was in the running for the closer's role this spring before being moved to the rotation in the wake of Marcus Stroman's season-ending injury.

The Blue Jays haven't had consistency in the closer's role this season. Brett Cecil opened as the closer before being quickly replaced by rookie Miguel Castro. Cecil was elevated back to the closer's role Tuesday, as Castro is now struggling.

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander plays light catch Tuesday

(4:29 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander threw an extremely light catch Tuesday, making 20 throws, manager Brad Ausmus said per MLB Network Radio.

Verlander, who is currently on the 15-day DL with triceps strain, has inflammation in his arm, but has gone down enough to make some throws, according to Ausmus. Verlander suffered the injury in his final spring training start and has yet to throw in a game this season.

Corey Hart replaces Alvarez at first. It's his second start there this season and second in the last seven games. He'll bat cleanup.

The Pirates are +107 money line underdogs at the Cubs.

Royals' Yost: Greg Holland might come off DL early next week
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:22 pm ET) Royals closer Greg Holland threw his first bullpen session Tuesday since being placed on the disabled list April 18 with a Grade 1 pectoral strain, per The Kansas City Star.

He threw 15 pitches and felt good, according to manager Ned Yost, per MLB.com.

Yost added there is a chance Holland will be ready to come off the disabled list early next week. Wade Davis has been the Royals' closer in Holland's absence.

Sean Rodriguez gets his second start of the season in right field for the Pirates, replacing Polanco. He's hitting eighth in the order.

The Pirates are +107 money line underdogs at the Cubs.
