Nathan Eovaldi battered in defeat to Rangers
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:47 pm ET) The rollercoaster stretch for Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi continued Wednesday against lowly Texas.

Eovaldi followed three strong starts with a dud. He suffered through three straight poor outings previous to that.

The right-hander yielded five runs to the Rangers in the first two innings. He surrendered six hits in those frames, including doubles by J.P. Arencibia and Alex Rios that combined to plate four runs. Eovaldi settled down to pitch three shutout innings thereafter, but still lowered his record to 6-8. He has just one win since June 23.

He is set to start again Tuesday against the host Angels.

Nick Martinez finally fine on the mound in sinking Marlins
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:38 pm ET) Summer was just ready to roll when Rangers rookie right-hander Nick Martinez last managed a quality start. He pitched his first one in nine outings dating back to June 21 Wednesday in Miami.

Martinez took advantage of a 5-0 lead by the time he took the mound in the second inning and finished with two runs allowed on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings. The relievers barely held on as Martinez raised his record to 3-9.

He will try to make it 4-9 Tuesday night in Seattle.

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4:25 pm ET) Tigers embattled right-hander Justin Verlander expects to start Saturday in Minnesota, though that is not set in stone, per MLive.com.

Verlander has been sidelined since Aug. 9 with shoulder soreness. He would return with a 10-11 mark, uncharacteristically high 4.76 ERA and just 118 strikeouts in 158 2/3 innings.
