Losses beginning to mount for Wade Miley
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:20 pm ET) Diamondbacks starting pitcher Wade Miley was effective over six innings Sunday against the Marlins, but he ended up as the tough-luck loser in a 2-1 loss. Miley was outdueled by Ricky Nolasco, who struck out 11 in eight-plus innings.

Miley (3-3) was locked in a scoreless battle until the Marlins scored twice in the sixth inning. The left-hander was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out six. Miley has lost three of his last four starts.

Miley will pitch Saturday against the Padres. Miley lost to San Diego on May 3, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings.

Justin Masterson dominates Mariners
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(4:14 pm ET) Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson dominated the Mariners over seven shutout innings in a win Sunday.

Masterson set a season high with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits and two walks. Masterson has seven quality starts in 10 outings. His ERA dropped to 2.83 with a 2.93 FIP.

Mike Dunn has to bail out Marlins' closer
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:14 pm ET) Marlins reliever Mike Dunn finished Sunday's 2-1 win after closer Steve Cishek struggled to get the job done in the ninth inning. Dunn came on after Cishek allowed a single and a walk with two outs.

Dunn walked the bases loaded before getting pinch hitter A.J. Pollock to ground out to shortstop to end the threat. It was Dunn's first 2013 save and second career save.

Steve Cishek pulled during save opportunity
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:11 pm ET) Marlins closer Steve Cishek was pulled during a save opportunity Sunday against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander entered the game in the ninth inning with Miami up 2-0 and a runner on base.

Cishek retired the first two batters, but his inherited runner scored. Cishek then allowed a single and walk before being replaced by Mike Dunn, who earned his first save of the season.

Ricky Nolasco ends losing skid behind 11 strikeouts
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:08 pm ET) Marlins starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco struck out 11 in eight-plus innings of a 2-1 win Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Nolasco was going for the complete-game shutout, but he was pulled in the ninth after allowing a leadoff double to Didi Gregorius, who would scored two batters later.

Nolasco (3-5), whose career-high for strikeouts in a game is 16, allowed a run on five hits and a walk. He threw 74 of 110 pitches for strikes. The right-hander had lost three straight starts coming entering Sunday.

Nolasco will next start Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. Nolasco is 7-10 with a 5.35 ERA in 19 career interleague starts.

Lucas Harrell takes tough-luck loss
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(4:07 pm ET) Astros starter Lucas Harrell allowed four hits and a walk over seven innings but it wasn't enough in a 1-0 loss to Jeff Locke and the Pirates.

Pittsburgh combined for a three-hitter to leave Harrell (3-5) with the loss, his third straight since winning three in a row. He struck out three and his only mistake was a solo homer to Pedro Alvarez in the fifth inning.

Harrell has allowed one earned run in six of his 10 starts this season and two or fewer runs in seven of his 10 outings. But he's also allowed five or more runs in each of his other three starts.

Harrell makes his next scheduled start Saturday against Oakland.

Austin Romine learning from Joe Girardi
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(4:02 pm ET) Yankees catcher Austin Romine is learning from someone with a lot of experience behind the plate -- manager Joe Girardi, MLB.com reports Sunday. Girardi has praised Romine's defensive, though his hitting may need work.

"I think he's gotten into a better rhythm with our pitchers. He has a better understanding," said Girardi. "He's been able to watch them a few times. He's gotten back there with I think almost everybody at this point. I think he's just getting more comfortable."

Romine is batting .182. He's been seeing more time of late with Francisco Cervelli on the DL and Chris Stewart battling a recent injury.

Nationals confident Jayson Werth will return Friday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:59 pm ET) The Nationals believe outfielder Jayson Werth (hamstring) will be ready to come off the disabled list Friday against the Phillies, according to The Washington Post. General manager Mike Rizzo said Werth returned home to Illinois to tend to a personal matter, but he will begin a rehab assignment this week.

The Nationals were hopeful Werth would have come off the disabled list this week, but his delay was because he visited with a specialist in New York.

"They worked the hamstring very well," Rizzo said. "They found out how they wanted to work it. In doing all that work on it, they flared it up. Hopefully, it’ll make it better in the long run. But they flared it up so he didn’t want to play the next day in the minor leagues. We’re having him rest today, and he’ll start ramping up baseball activities this week."

Ross Detwiler to avoid DL stint
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:56 pm ET) Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said the team has no plans to place starting pitcher Ross Detwiler on the disabled list after an MRI revealed only a slight oblique strain, according to The Washington Post. Detwiler will miss Monday's start against the Giants, with Zack Duke making a spot start.

Detwiler might not make his following start either, but Thursday's off-day gives the team flexibility and it can keep Detwiler off the DL.

"We’re hoping he does pitch," Rizzo said of Detwiler returning to action May 26 vs. Philadelphia. "We don’t have to call up a pitcher, a starter, from the minor leagues. We’re hoping Ross can take the next start. If not, we can skip his start and guys are still on regular rest."

But the Nationals would need Detwiler to be ready by May 28 in order to avoid Jordan Zimmermann pitching on short rest.

"In essence, we’ll have 10 or 11 days until that spot needs to pitch again," Rizzo said. "We think Ross will be OK by then."

Mike Aviles heating up with bat
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3:55 pm ET) Indians shortstop Mike Aviles had two hits Sunday against the Mariners. Aviles helped Cleveland beat Felix Hernandez in the 6-0 win. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

Aviles has hit in three-straight games and has gone 5 for 11 with two doubles, a homer and three runs scored over that stretch. He's batting .292.
