Elian Herrera cranks out five hits in win over Cardinals

(6:29 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Elian Herrera had a career day Sunday afternoon with five hits in a win against the Cardinals.

Herrera doubled in the sixth and added four singles, finishing a perfect 5 for 5 with three runs scored in an 11-2 victory. He owns a .276/.281/.333 with two RBI in 87 at-bats.

Carlos Martinez gets roughed up in final start before the break

(6:15 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez was roughed up Sunday afternoon against Milwaukee, dropping to 2-4 on the year. The right-hander was shelled for four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings of an 11-2 defeat.

Martinez enters the All-Star break with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP over 63 innings of work. His next start remains to be seen, as the Cardinals have yet to announce their post-break rotation.


Aroldis Chapman strikes out side for 21st save

(6:13 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman was dominant in the ninth inning during Sunday's 6-3 win against the Pirates, earning his 21st save. Chapman struck out the side to earn his fifth save in July.

Chapman has recorded two or more strikeouts in five straight appearances. He has at least one strikeout in every appearance this season. He has 60 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings.


Johnny Cueto earns 10th win before All-Star break

(6:08 pm ET) Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto capped his first half with a win Sunday against the Pirates. The first-time All-Star allowed three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out seven in six innings.

Cueto (10-6) opened with three scoreless innings before Neil Walker had an RBI groundout in the fourth inning. Josh Harrison came back with an RBI single in the fifth inning and Walker hit a solo home run leading off the sixth inning. But Cueto left with a 6-3 lead, which the bullpen held.

The right-hander won for the fifth time in seven starts. He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in his last seven starts. Cueto is expected to pitch in the first series after the All-Star break against the Yankees.


Royals unveil rotation plans

(6:04 pm ET) The Royals will open the second half with James Shields starting Friday at Boston, reports the Kansas City Star. Lefty Danny Duffy will pitch Saturday, with Yordano Ventura starting next Sunday.

Jeremy Guthrie and Bruce Chen will fill the fourth and fifth spots of the rotation. Chen is filling in for Jason Vargas, who's recovering from an appendectomy.


Omar Infante continues to deliver

(5:55 pm ET) Royals second baseman Omar Infante went 1 for 4 with a two-run single in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Tigers. Infante finished the weekend series 5 for 12 and has hit safely in 12 of his past 13 games.

Infante is hitting .276/.317/.381 with 46 RBI in 286 at-bats entering the All-Star break.


Chien-Ming Wang opts out of minor-league deal with Reds

(5:53 pm ET) Reds starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang opted out of his minor-league contract, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Wang was 8-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Louisville.

Greg Holland keeps rolling

(5:49 pm ET) Royals closer Greg Holland recorded his 25th save in 26 chances Sunday. He tossed a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, to nail down a 5-2 win over Detroit.

Holland boasts a 1.82 ERA heading into the All-Star break.


David Wright gets planned cortisone injection for shoulder

(5:48 pm ET) Mets third baseman David Wright received a cortisone injection in his shoulder following Sunday's game against the Marlins. However, it was planned and Wright said his shoulder feels fine, according to the New York Daily News.

Bruce Chen solid in spot start

(5:47 pm ET) Royals pitcher Bruce Chen allowed two runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Sunday against the Tigers, striking out two and walking none. He did not get a decision in the team's 5-2 victory.

It was a spot start for Chen, who's 1-2 with a 6.46 ERA this year.
